  10. Montreal Pianist Andrés Vial To Release "Gang of Three," Modern Jazz Piano Trio Album of Original Compositions With South American & African Influences Vial's 5th Studio Album as Leader Features Bassist Dezron Douglas & Drummer Eric McPherson Digital & Physical Release by Chromatic Audio Records Set for October 4 CD Release Show, Friday, October 4 Upstairs Jazz Club (Montreal OFF Jazz Festival) August 26, 2019 Gang of Three, the stunning new album of originals by Montreal pianist Andrés Vial (pronounced Vee-al) and his fifth as a leader, was written over a two-year period marked by major life events -- becoming a first-time father, and returning to university to complete a Master's degree in jazz piano. It will be released October 4 on the Chromatic Audio label. Described as "a crisp, inventive pianist" (Stuart Broomer, The WholeNote) who "eschews the obvious to dig a little deeper" (Mike Greenblatt, The Aquarian Weekly), Vial received critical acclaim internationally for his 2018 Thelonious Monk tribute album, Sphereology Volume One, featuring guitarist Peter Bernstein. For Gang of Three, Vial reunited withbassist Dezron Douglas (who also appeared on Sphereology Volume One) and collaborated for the first time with drummer Eric McPherson. Vial was "inspired by the deep musicality and in-the-moment risk-taking that Eric and Dez brought to the music. These cats never play a song the same way twice!" The title track is a tribute to the friendship of three bebop piano icons -- Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and Elmo Hope. After naming the song, however, Vial began thinking about the different trios in his own life: "I love playing in a piano trio precisely because of the magic that can happen between a pianist, bassist, and drummer in that setting," says Vial. "And now that my wife and I have a son, I live with my very own gang of three!" "Chacarera para Wayne" finds the pianist simultaneously revisiting his roots with a folkloric Argentinian rhythm and paying tribute to Wayne Shorter. "After I wrote the piece," says Vial, "I realized that the pedal point harmony and dark, sparse melodic theme showed the compositional influence of Wayne Shorter, so it made sense to dedicate it to him." Other highlights include "Ferguson," a 12/8 gospel ballad inspired by Jason 'Blackbird' Selman's poem "Ferguson/St. Louis Blues"; and "Montaigne," which employs an off-kilter samba funk groove and unusual chord colors that echo dualities and paradoxes discussed in the works of the16th-century French philosopher for whom the song is named. "Put Your Spikes In" draws inspiration from Central African Gbaya mbira music, while "Samba Fantasma" is named for a friendly ghost known to reside in the concert hall where Vial rehearses. Andrés Vial was born January 25, 1979, in Montreal. His father was an amateur classical pianist and as early as he can remember Andrés was sitting at the piano improvising little songs, beginning piano lessons shortly thereafter. He also learned from the classical, Latin, and pop records that he heard around the house, until the day when he was 11 that his mother came home with a copy of John Coltrane's Blue Train. "I was just floored," he says. "That was the record that really changed the course of my life, and I was obsessed with it for years to come." He joined his middle school and high school jazz bands and also began playing drums and vibraphone. Andrés studied jazz drums and classical percussion at a college in Montreal, before transferring to the New School in New York and completing a degree in jazz piano. Among his teachers were Bill Charlap, Hal Galper, Joe Chambers, and Buster Williams. After graduation, Vial returned to his hometown, where he recorded his first three albums:Trio/Septet (2007) featuring Malika Tirolien (Bokante, Snarky Puppy), The Infinite Field(2011), and conception/oblivion (2015). In 2018, he released the critically acclaimed Andrés Vial Plays Thelonious Monk:Sphereology Volume One, a quartet outing featuring Peter Bernstein, Dezron Douglas, Rodney Green, Martin Heslop, and André White. Tor Hammerø (Nettavisen) described Vial as "a brilliant Monk interpreter and pianist." And Scott Yanow (The New York City Jazz Record) wrote that "the high musicianship and obvious affection for the songs make Sphereology Volume One a worthy effort." Although he has been working steadily on the next Sphereology volumes, Vial didn't want to interrupt the documentation process of his own development as a composer -- hence the arrival of Gang of Three. "I'm looking forward to playing gigs with Dezron and Eric," he says, "and delving deeper into this material. We're just at the beginning of working as a trio together." I came away believing that good speakers cannot overcome the mediocre signal of a crummy turntable. What I have liked about CDs from the start is that they don't wear out because of use.

  19. Antonio Adolfo "Samba Jazz Alley" Impacting: August 22 2019 Format(s): Jazz Artist Title Time Antonio Adolfo Ceu E Mar 06:06 Antonio Adolfo Hello, Herbie 06:41 Antonio Adolfo So Por Amor 05:12 Antonio Adolfo Casa Forte 04:29 Antonio Adolfo Tristeza De Nos Dois 05:09 Antonio Adolfo The Frog 03:38 Antonio Adolfo Obrigado 05:42 Antonio Adolfo Passarim 05:35 Antonio Adolfo Corcovado 05:45 Rio de Janeiro native Antonio Adolfo was just a teenager in the early 1960s when he became part of the bossa nova revolution that was sweeping Brazil and the rest of the world. Not content to spend most of his career backing vocalists, the pianist and many of his peers began crafting a more rhythmically robust instrumental interpretation of the lithe and flirtatious bossa. Influenced by the Bebop, Soul Jazz and West Coast trends that ruled the day in the U.S., the potent result was coined “Samba Jazz.” The movement experienced a surge of popularity thanks to the emergence of such soon-to-be-famous artists as Sérgio Mendes, Moacir Santos, The Tamba Trio, Elis Regina, Leny Andrade, Raul de Souza and... Antonio Adolfo. Samba Jazz Alley is the latest chapter in a series of releases on Adolfo’s AAM label that have explored a wide range of stylistic variants of Brazilian music. The session’s title refers to an obscure dead-end alley in the heart of Rio’s storied Copacabana neighborhood that served as a breeding ground for the city’s up-and-coming instrumentalists and singers during the heyday of bossa nova. The alley was termed Beco das Garrafas (Bottles Alley) because residents of neighboring apartments would shower the tiny space with beer bottles to protest the early morning racket produced by Bohemian revelers and impromptu jam sessions. Bottles Bar, the alleyway’s main venue, is reputed to have showcased over 100 of Brazil’s most noted musicians and vocalists of the day. The budding pianist and composer recalls taking a bus with his 3D Trio companions to perform a set at the bar in 1964. “It’s impossible to know how many tunes that became standards were first performed there,” he states. “Bottles Bar was like a ‘notable peoples’ club!” On Samba Jazz Alley, Adolfo has the luxury of performing with a core ensemble that features the talents of some of the best Brazilian jazz musicians of their genera- tion. The three-horn frontline of trumpeter Jessé Sadoc, woodwind artist Marcelo Martins and trombonist Rafael Rocha provides a muscular ensemble sound that’s perfect for this hard-hitting genre. Joining Adolfo in the rhythm section is an equally distinguished crew, including guitarist Lula Galvão, bassist Jorge Helder, drummer Rafael Barata, and percussionist Dada Costa. The session’s nine tracks capture the vivacious character of Samba Jazz via Adolfo’s ingenious arrangements of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim (“Corcovado” and “Passarim”), Johnny Alf (“Céu E Mar”), Edu Lobo (“Casa Forte”), Baden Powell (“Só Por Amor”), João Donato (“The Frog”), and two themes by the leader (“Obrigado” and “Hello, Herbie,” a tribute to Herbie Hancock). A particularly mesmerizing take is the gorgeous bossa ballad “Tristeza De Nos Dois” (The Sadness of the Two of Us), featuring one of the song’s three co-composers, the legendary harmonica player Maurício Einhorn, in the company of Gabriel Grossi, Brazil’s current harmonica sensation. Samba Jazz Alley is another triumph for Antonio Adolfo and a landmark recording in the still evolving Samba Jazz movement. 20. Welcome back Garth!
  21. We are now at the mid-point of the season, so let's take a look at the standings. https://www.cfl.ca/standings/ We know that three teams will not make the playoffs. Toronto and BC have each won only once. Ottawa has lost six of its last seven. Unless another team collapses because of injuries, I have to think that we already know who won't make the playoffs. So this should allow the fourth West team to cross over. I expect that to be the Riders. I think there have been two big surprises thus far. The first has been that BC's o-line has been terrible. The Lions' free agent signings over the winter made them look like a powerhouse. But they are the worst in the league in allowing sacks, and that's a mark of a really bad team. The second surprise is that the Als have become competitive. The credit has been given to Vernon Adams, Jr., but he hasn't been doing it by himself. Today it appears that Montreal will host a playoff game.

While perhaps best known for his spirited standard "Route 66," the legendary singer, pianist, tunesmisth and master lyricist left behind a deep and wild treasure trove of quirky/playful and heartfelt songs from which Winkler pays homage to in his latest album I'M WITH YOU. The 12-track collection is a uniaque gathering of freshly re-imagined Troup songs done in Winkler's cool and swinging manner. The project came about when Troup's two daughters, Ronne and Cynnie gifterd Winkler with a box of Troup's personal sheet music and 8 CDs iof Troup tunes. Featured Musicians include: Kevin Axt/Joe Bagg/Gabe Davis/ Rich Eames/Mark Ferber/ Grant Geissman/ Bob Shppard/Dave Tull/ Anthony Wilson Produced by Mark Winkler and Dolores Scozzesi Attachments I'm With Y..
