  1. I'm sick of the "greatest ever" hyperbole with Jordan. Jordan's Bulls beat old, depleted teams and mediocre, unbalanced teams. It was a lull between Kareem and Shaq.

In fact, I'm sick of the individual being raised above the team. No basketball player wins anything alone. Not Jordan, or Kobe, or LeBron, or anybody.

I half agree. :P To get to the lull (10 years of LA sucking, so the league must not have been good  ) they had to kill off the Bad Boys. You play who you have to play, and Seattle, Phoenix & Utah were all fine teams. Certainly as good if not better than the likes of the NJ Nets or that Orlando team the Lakers had to face. Or god, that Cleveland team the Spurs had to face? Sheeeeesh. I think the Bulls competition was just fine during the '90s thankyouverymuch.

I have no problem whatsoever with not thinking that Jordan is the greatest ever, I don't even necessarily think it myself. One player isn't going to do it and there are different jobs to be done on the court. What the hell would Jordan vs. Jabbar one-on-one look like anyway? It's silly.

And yes, ring counting is stupid. Plus some guys get so close, and fighting the good the fight is what sports is about. Malone & Stockton could easily have a ring each if you call a pushing off foul before "the last shot." And this is the sport with shakiest officiating too.

If you do ring counting, Bill Russell is the greatest player ever and Robert Horry is one of the greatest ever(Better than Wilt!), Bob Love stunk, Patrick Ewing stunk, etc.

  2. This is remarkable if true and I'd love to see A-Rod and Braun go down for 100 games, but I can't understand why the owner of the clinic would agree to turn over everything to MLB, essentially announcing to law enforcement that he was a dope dealer. Maybe they were already going to take him down but why admit it all now? I don't think MLB's lawsuit against him was going anywhere, either.

What if A-Rod gets suspended for 100 games without pay, does that count against the Yanks salary figures? I ask, because I'm thinking that if A-rod doesn't get off the DL this season, he'll be suspended for 100 games in 2014. If his salary doesn't count because of the suspension, the Yanks have a much easier time of getting under the magic $189 million mark.

  3. 2-6 baby! Astros riding a one game winning streak!

(still trusting you, Goodspeak, that the Astros will finish 3rd in the AL West)

Ok, hasn't been much reason to check in here. I'm still doubting Goody's 3rd place finish prediction. 'Stros are 12-32, on pace for a 44-118 season. Ugh. 5 years away from being competitive, assuming everything breaks the right way.

Not much incentive to make a trip to Houston for a game, which I used to like to do when I could. Gonna be a while before that happens again.

Race between Houston and Miami for worst record in baseball!

  4. wasn't kazmir married to a talkative stripper back in metropolitan days???

It was another pitcher, his last name was Benson, his wife wasn't a stripper, but she showed up for a Christmas kids pary wearing something tight and low cut and she was a big mouth, which helped grease hubby's exit from NYC.

  5. Yes it is! [referring to the Cleveland ballclub]

Tribe added some of their customary rehab/refurbish jobs (Scott Kazmir, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Brett Myers, Jason Giambi). Typically this would be it for the cheap franchise. But they broke team records with free agent contracts to Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher, were opportunistic with Mark Reynolds (whom the Orioles didn't want to pay) on a one year deal, and lucky thus far with Ryan Raburn (and others). I'm not at all convinced that Swisher is any sort of stud and Bourn is no Kenny Lofton.

National press making much of the Reds' addition of Shin-Soo Choo. It should be remembered that this is a one year rental of a Boras client who definitely needed a change of scenery, and the Tribe got back (as part of a large deal) prospect Trevor Bauer (who admittedly may be a head case), outfielder Drew Stubbs, and reliever Bryan Shaw who are all contributing. Outfield defense which was dreadful last season is now quite good--helps when you can put three good centerfielders out there (Bourn, Stubbs, and Michael Brantley).

There have been a few injuries, but no one could have expected things to go much better than they have thus far (at least over last 20+ games). Starting pitching was (and frankly still is) the big question mark. Masterson has been a stud and Ubaldo is a recovering head case who may be able to give you 7 innings. We'll see how long it lasts.

Too bad attendance is still poor. But being a cheap owner for years on end will tend to do that in a cash strapped market. Hopefully with school out and more reliably warm weather the gates will improve.

Today's fun fact: Tribe is now 7-1 against Cy Young winners. They have now vanquished Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander, R.A. Dickey, David Price, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, and Bartolo Colon. Only Cy loss was to Jake Peavy. And they are not just squeaking by in these wins.

Swisher's not a stud, and if you look only at BA, he appears average. Ho does do a good job of getting on base and his OBP is usually very good. I saw an article in a local paper about Kazmir(former Met), and it sounds like his mechanics were a wreck, due to injuries and not knowing much about his own form. He's only 29, so if he gets it together he could turn out to be a good pitcher.

  6. LONDON (AP) — Miles and Jimi. Jimi and Miles. Fans of the late trumpet and guitar masters have long known that Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix had been making plans to record together in the year before Hendrix's sudden death in 1970.

But less attention has been paid to the bass player they were trying to recruit: Paul McCartney, who was busy with another band at the time.

This tantalizing detail about the super group that never was — jazz standout Tony Williams would have been on drums — is contained in an oft-overlooked telegram that Hendrix sent to McCartney at The Beatles' Apple Records in London on Oct. 21, 1969.

"We are recording and LP together this weekend in NewYork," it says, complete with typographical errors. "How about coming in to play bass stop call Alvan Douglas 212-5812212. Peace Jimi Hendrix Miles Davis Tony Williams."

What doesn't fit here? I can hardly imagine Miles/hendrix/Williams with Paul McCartney?????!!! on bass? WTF?

  8. Reporter tonight to Ron Washington (parphrased):

Wash, ther's been a lot of murmurring about the offense being cold, etetcetcetc, blahblahblah, yet you guys are 19-11. You keep winning, Isn't that all that matters?

    Ron Washington:

    We can play bas

    eball.

I can't even calculate how much better they are than the pathetic bunch of over-rated douchebags that embarrassed themselves at Arlington this weekend.

But Dan, it's the FIRST PLACE bunch of over-rated douchebags!:)

  9. Hamilton & Pujols both are never again going to be as consistently great as they once were. But they still have moments of greatness left in them, and if fate (or whatever it is) decides that they will have those moments at just the right time, then look out.

That, however, is a gambling strategy, not an investment strategy.

I hear a little bit of E.F. Hutton there. ;) I think Gene Autry's ghost took over the team a few years ago. Wells, Mathews Jr., a whole lot for Pujols and again for Hamilton. They seek out players who are heading away from their prime and pay them using some formula involving age & weight. Actually I'm insulting Autry, as at least good years were gotten from Carew and Grich & Baylor were still in their late 20s when they were signed.

The Pujols contract will be the Angels version of the Yankees and A-Rod, premium $$ spent on an aging, broken down player in the last years of the contract.
