  1. OK, I admit I'm a little late in discovering the India Navigation label. I've been impressed by everything I've heard so far. I did a search and couldn't find an Organissimo thread(I did find one over at AAJ but I tend to avoid that site if possible) devoted to the label, so here goes. I'd like members to share recommendations for future purchases(what to get, what to avoid), stories about the label(its history) or Bob Cummins. Any info about the current status of the recordings would be welcomed. I found this discography which is helpful but it doesn't tell me what recordings have made it to CD. Here's what I have: Chico Freeman - Chico, Kings Of Mali, The Outside Within, The Search Jay Hoggard - Mystic Winds, Tropic Breezes; Riverside Dance Bob Neloms - Pretty Music Dennis Moorman - Circle Of Destiny

  3. Went to its other location today during my lunch hour. This place has an even better selection. The hardest part for me was deciding what not to buy. I could have easily blown $400 or $500 in there. With a lot of restraint I made it out there w/ my wallet a little lighter and the following - Jarman - Moye - Dyani - Black Paladins (Black Saint) Chico Freeman - No Time Left (BS) Chico - Kings of Mali (India Navigation) Monnette Sudler - Time for a Change (Inner City) Andrew Hill - Invitation (SteepleChase) Ornette - Soap Suds (Artist House) Lester Bowie - Phillip Wilson - Duet (Improvising Artists) As I was leaving the guy behind the counter told me that they are getting 6000 records delivered between the two stores tomorrow. Must... be... strong....
  4. Update. Da Bastids have the box set as being available "around April 10" - no price. DMG is taking pre-orders for $70 - no date. No update yet on the Cadillac site.
  5. No Unfortunately C. Webb is not a HoF player. Yes, he scored lots of points and was a good passer. But he was not a winner and he did not contribute enough to make his teams a winner. C. Webb also did not play the style of basketball that was pertinent to his position. He was a power forward with the "power" removed. C. Webb only mixed it up with other power forwards when he gained more weight from being injured and even then he was reluctant, he wanted to be a big guard (which more than once hampered the real guards on his teams). While he had a very good career and was paid very well, he is not a HoF. ... If the refs hadn't sent the Lakers to the charity stripe 27 times in the 4th quarter during the 6th game against Sac inthe 2002 West finals he would have got one. No, no, noooo. They would only have been in the NBA Finals, so noone knows if he would have gotten a ring or not. And it wasn't the free throws that beat them, it was the batted away rebound by the ex-Laker Divacs that allowed the Lakers to steal that game. And C.Webb did not have the impact of a Karl Malone etc. Look I am a Michigan man myself and I would love for a Michigan man to make HoF but C.Webb just does not have those credentials. It is a little bit more than "just" numbers. Look, who ever was coming out of the West in 2002 was going to win. The Lakers swept the Nets, remember? Divac flopping around on the floor any time someone got within 6 inches of him had more to do w/ that win then his rebounding. But we're getting off on another tangent. Garnett, Webber, Bird, Wilt, Elgin Baylor, and Billy Cunningham. These are the only 6 guys to have ever averaged at least 20 PPG, 9 RPG, and 4 APG for a career. The last 4 are in the hall. OK so he didn't live up to the hype that was surrounding him when he came out of Michigan. Although that had more to do w/ injuries and unrealistic expectations then his performance. When CWebb was healthy he was great. Even when his knees were shot he was probably one of the best big man passers to ever play the game. His career averages would be even better if he had retired about 3 years ago. I thought he dogged it for most of the time that he played in Philly and when I first thought about him getting into the HoF my immediate reaction was,"No F'ing way". But I think I was letting my personal bias get in the way of my better judgement. I think he'll get in. Maybe not first ballot but he'll get in.
  6. PM sent.
  7. My wife just called to let me know that we are leaving SATURDAY for Pittsburgh!!! So I'm going after all!!!! Wahoo!!
  8. C. While he had a very good career and was paid very well, he is not a HoF. So even though he played in over 830 NBA games(equivalent to 10 seasons) and averaged nearly a double double(20ppg/9.8reb) he doesn't get in?? He's one of 6 players to avg. 20ppg, 9rpg, 4apg for a career. Those are sick numbers. Not a winner?? All of his the teams he played for made the playoffs. There are are plenty of people in the HoF who never won a ring. How many rings does Barkley have? Or Malone? Patrick Ewing anyone? If the refs hadn't sent the Lakers to the charity stripe 27 times in the 4th quarter during the 6th game against Sac in the 2002 West finals he would have got one.
  9. So now that CWebb has officially retired* let the debate begin.... Does he get in the HoF??? * 5 years too late
  10. Somebody please tell the Sixers to stop messing w/ my head. They beat Boston on the road last night, after a 19-0 run in the 4th.
  11. Just looking at the box score - Dice has 5 walks in 4 innings?? I guess he's a little nervous??
  12. No, I have to go to Pittsburgh for a wedding. So bummed.
  13. Almost got through side A of Air - Air Time (Nessa) before my son informed me that he wanted to watch tv. Sigh.
  14. Yeah, $1000 is way too much. We get both of our beagles teeth cleaned once a year for $500-600 all told.
  15. I went(finally) to a local used vinyl shop that opened up about two years ago. I only made it through the "B's" before my wife called me home but I still found some good deals. For $5 bucks a piece I got the following in opened but probably played once condition: Hamiett Bluiett - Resolution (Black Saint) Muhal Richard Abrams - Hearinga Suite (BS) Muhal Richard Abrams - Blues Forever (BS) Adams/Pullen/Brown/Richmond - Don't Lose Control (Soul Note) Amina Claudine Myers - The Circle of Time (BS)
  16. Great find!! So that's Harold Mabern, Jymie Merritt, Billy Harper and who's on drums? Freddie Waits??
  17. A bunch of sealed records on India Navigation today. Chico Freeman - Chico Dennis Moorman - Circles of Destiny Jay Hoggard - Riverside Dance J.H. - Mystic Winds, Tropic Breezes $8 a piece. Pretty good, I thought, considering what these usually fetch on Ebay for used copies.

Damn, my mom lives in Media. It's right outside of Philly. I'll ask her if there's any news in her local paper.
  19. TY's are the best, IMHO.
  20. 920 Clinton???? Nice block. Edit: I thought you lived in West Philly??
  21. Other sources of information say the LP+download package will be released first, but a CD and seperate downloads will follow 2 weeks later. It would indeed be irrational for an artist to ignore the format which still sells the most. And even if the CD was dead, why oblige iPod users to buy an LP they cannot play if they only need the download coupon? If Costello's new album was only to be found in LP bins and the vinyl section of online stores, it would become a massive flop. Yeah, you're right - it would be suicide to release it just in a LP/download package. I wonder if Reuters will print a correction?
  22. Chewy here's your chance to make your very own BB concert memories!!! Legal deal restores good vibrations to Beach Boys By Steve Gorman1 hour, 44 minutes ago An out-of-court settlement has restored good vibrations among the three surviving original members of the Beach Boys, an attorney involved in the case said on Thursday. The agreement, reached on Wednesday after two days of talks mediated by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge, put to rest years of litigation stemming from a dispute between Al Jardine and his ex-bandmates over the group's name, which defined the California surf sound of the 1960s. Jardine -- a co-founder of the band with brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson and their cousin, Mike Love -- had been touring under such names as "Beach Boys Family & Friends" until a federal judge ruled in 2000 he was engaging in trademark infringement. The decision affirmed Love's claim as the sole licensee of the "Beach Boys" name under a deal he negotiated with the band's corporate entity, Brother Records Inc, in 1998. A U.S. appeals court upheld that ruling in 2003, again siding against Jardine in the case brought by Love, Brian Wilson and the estate of Carl Wilson, who died of cancer in 1998. Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983. Love and the Carl Wilson estate sued Jardine again on behalf of Brother Records in 2004 seeking $2.2 million in legal fees spent in the original litigation against him. It was that case, set for trial next month, that was settled this week, said Carla DiMare, who represents the Carl Wilson estate, consisting of his two sons, Justyn and Jonah. "The parties amicably settled," she told Reuters, adding that terms of the agreement were confidential. "Mr. Love and ... Mr. Jardine are looking forward to bringing more great Beach Boys music to the United States and around the world, particularly as they approach their 50th anniversary," DiMare said. Love and Jardine both attended the settlement conference, spending the first day in court chatting and occasionally singing lines from the Beach boys hit "Help Me Rhonda" and other songs while attorneys met with the judge in chambers. Brian Wilson also attended for part of the first day. All three are shareholders of Brother Records, along with the Carl Wilson Estate. Founded in suburban Los Angeles in the early 1960s, the Beach Boys reigned for several years as America's leading pop group with such hits as "I Get Around," "Surfin' U.S.A.," and "Good Vibrations." 23. Costello skips CD format on next album By Jonathan Cohen2 hours, 45 minutes ago Elvis Costello's next solo studio album, curiously dubbed "Momofuku," will arrive April 22, and plans are for the set to be released only on vinyl, with a digital download code included in the package. No other details are available about the Lost Highway release, which follows 2004's "The Delivery Man," Costello's debut on the label with his band the Imposters. Since then, Costello recorded "The River in Reverse" with pianist Allen Toussaint and supervised the first wave of his back-catalog reissues through Universal. The most recent of those, "This Year's Model," arrived March 4. Costello will open the Police's summer North American tour, beginning May 10 in Chicago. He also has headlining dates on tap beforehand, starting April 22 in Memphis. Reuters/Billboard
  24. Muhal Richard Abrams - 1-OQA+19 (Black Saint) AMG gave this 2.5 stars out of 5. WTF????
  25. Oh, dear. Just "The Music of Hank Mobley." Not "The Life and Music of Hank Mobley." Another entry in the burgeoning field of guy-writes-about-his-record-collection books that are passing for real jazz scholarship at presses that should know better? Don't be so hasty to judge a book by its cover er, title. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/acotterrell/ Workout – The Music of Hank Mobley by Derek Ansell Hardback, 192 pages, £13.99, available from April 2008. ISBN 978 09550908 8 2. This is the first full-length book to be published about Hank Mobley. Among the great American modern jazz saxophonists, Mobley had been the most unjustly neglected – the truly forgotten man. Yet he played and recorded prolifically with the greatest legends of his era such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Johnny Griffin and Art Blakey, helping to create some of their finest work. His best recordings are classics, characterized by an instantly identifiable sound and style, and constant musical inventiveness. But his loner personality made him his own worst enemy, many of his records remained unissued in his lifetime, and he died forgotten and destitute. Now, at last, most of his recorded legacy is available on CD and he is recognized as one of the major figures of modern jazz. This book provides a detailed introduction to the music and a reassessment of Mobley’s contribution to jazz.
