Because he was lumped in with West Coast cool school, drummer Shelly Manne was one of those great musicians who may have been taken for granted by too many jazz fans. His diversity, taste, swingmanship and engaging life story will be featured during this evening's Jazz Retrospective over Blue Lake Public Radio from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Hope you can join us after the Tierney Sutton Band concert at St. Cecilia Music Society tonight. http://tinyurl.com/y8t6mup Donald's Encyclopedia of Popular Music - MANNE, Shelly (b Sheldon Manne, 11 June 1920, NYC; d 26 September 1984, Los Angeles CA) Drummer. His father and two uncles were also drummers. He worked on transatlantic liners; for bandleaders Raymond Scott, Les Brown; ...

Trumpeter Howard McGhee grew up in Detroit admiring Louis Armstrong's Decca big band recordings, but his band director handed him a clarinet. When he eventually did take up trumpet, under the spell of Roy Eldridge, the lessons on the woodwinds served him well: Maggie in the 1940's was second only to Dizzy Gillespie, though was eventually eclipsed by his own protege Fats Navarro. Smack took him out of the 50's, but he struggled back. Tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake the bebop trumpeter Howard McGhee with Andy Kirk's 12 Clouds of Joy, with Bird, and with his friend Fats Navarro, amongst others. Please join us after 10 p.m. http://www.bluelake.org/radio

Was talking to trumpeter Dennis Gonzalesz of Texas not too long ago and he mentioned how few improvising trumpeters there were out there, in jazz or creative music. Here in west Michigan, though, and across the state, there's a bunch of them. Tonight in Grand Rapids you could hear two fine players, Eddie Curtis and Chris Lawrence, who owe a stylistic debt to Chet Baker. Chet is our featured artist tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake, though the recordings we're playing will not be what you'd expect. In December we programmed a retrospective on his earlier music, so tonight we're diving into the 1970's and 1980's recordings he made, mostly. Don't usually go there, so, should be an adventure. Please join us tonight from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. via http://bluelake.ncats.net/ Then Saturday morning for a conversation and music with Tierney Sutton, who appears in Grand Rapids next Thursday, from 8 to 10 a.m. Thanks to the O! I thought you meant the new one, "Makin' Whoopee!" which Svend just released on Arbors Records. http://www.arborsrecords.com/recordtemplate.html?ProductID=19390 p.s. I met Svend, heard him play and interviewed him in 1985 while visiting Denmark with a tour of the Blue Lake Monster featuring Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney and James Carter. The Svendster was at the Slukafter (spelling!) at Tivoli Gardens with Kenny Drew, NHOP and Ed Thigpen. Been playing his recordings, what there are of them, on the radio here ever since. Don't have the SweDanes sides, or anything, but The Jazz Violin Sessions with Duke; was it "June Night" on Dr. Jazz records? A few others....

ditto the About Times. "When Was That" was the first record I played on the air here at Blue Lake back in 1983. It was originally known as "Fanfare and Celebration," which it is. Every March 1st for the last 26 years I've played "When Was That" in celebration of playing "When Was That" on the radio for the first time March 1, 1983. Need to replace my lp copy, though: it's about turned white. Can't have that!

The Union Caberet and Grill in Kalamzoo is Western Michigan University's jazz club. If you go to Western Michigan University's school of music web page, click on faculty and then Tom Knific -- he's a bassist who might be able to help with how to get in there. -

Saxophonis Jorrit Dijkstra writes: - Han Bennink's visited Boston late October. I played with him and Greek pianist Pandelis Karayorgis in a double concert at MIT (Boston), with Anthony Coleman and Han doing a fantastic second set. Han also gave two workshops to students at the New England Conservatory and Umass Dartmouth, and left a big impression on them. It reminds me how amazing of a musician Han is, with his unbelievable energy, his strong individuality and his humbleness as a person. Very inspiring indeed, and his music touches a very Dutch root in me somehow...
