Like others here I was a regular in the basement on Saturdays mornings in the late '60s - Central Line from Northolt with my schoolfriend Tony. BYG/Actuel (anything by Shepp) and Terry Riley's Reed Streams in a very heavy card cover are purchases I remember plus lots of chat, wonderful music. Great times. RIP Ray.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
ornette replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Monk, 16 Riverside Albums here http://www.amazon.fr/Riverside-Albums-Coffret-16-CD/dp/B003V1ARGC/ref=pd_sim_m_1 for €34 plus postage -
Thanks for the heads up. Looked at the listing on Amazon. No record label mentioned that's reissuing this. Could be a Fresh Sounds (Spain) needledrop bootleg for all we know. Amazon UK says 'Solar Records'

Avid in the UK have reissued several Brubeck lps at a very reasonable price. Not sure of the status. Amazon UK stock them.

Avid is British. This is a good release --- much cheaper to order from Amazon UK. Avid have put out lots of good stuff. Search for 'Four Classic' or Three Classic' on Amazon UK.

Ray ( of 'Rays Jazz' ) was a big cricket fan too and you would have been just as likely to hear the radio on in his shop. Must be a connection between jazz and cricket. Probably, as my wife says, hours of boredom interrupted by a few moments of excitement! I'm sure I remember listening in to 'Test Match Special' in the first Mole shop too ! I think I read somewhere (Jim Godbolt's book I think) that Ray was a regular in the 'Jazzers XI' that included at least one County-level player in its ranks. An old school friend of mine, Tony Sawbridge, with whom I used to visit Ray's, played in the same (or a similar) team.

That would be The Record Centre, run by the irrepressible Ray Purslow. Wide choice of modern jazz downstairs, vocals (including a massive Sinatra selection), swing, big bands upstairs. Closed in May 2007 on Ray's retirement. Picture shows the final day. This was the second shop. The first was also on Lower Loveday Street, a few doors on. [The church is St Chad's, first Catholic cathedral built in England since the Reformation, designed by Pugin.] I've found this thread fascinating since I was a regular visitor to jazz shops in central London in the sixties - I lived then in Hayes, so was familiar with Squires in Ealing, mentioned in an earlier post. Remember buying there 'How My Heart Sings' by Bill Evans, still a favourite. I always started at Collet's (Ray's) in New Oxford Street - bought many BYGs there, always a great atmosphere in the basement. Then onto Dobell's (agree it was less friendly) and Asmans. I always liked visiting Mole, especially the first shop. A memory is of everyone listening to the radio - not jazz. It was the afternoon Graham Hick scored 405 not out at Taunton.

No, some have gone from having a release date (29th July, which the Ferguson still has) to 'currently unavailable'. HMV is showing 1st September. Amazon UK now showing release date 1st September.

Just got the cd, sounds very impressive.

Just to bring this thread up to date, the website stream (usually) shows tracks being played. The station now has presenters and a few adverts. Too many vocals for my taste but still a lot of jazz.

Great Tubs video clip at http://almax.wordpress.com/2007/01/21/tubby-hayes-1965/

Apologies for the confusion, caused by me not paying enough attention. The distortion is only on one track - but in several places (track 2 Come Rain or Come Shine), namely in the piano chords behind the bass solo, the piano solo after the bass solo and in the final theme statement. On relistening I think it comes from the tape (that 'elastic band' sound) rather than the piano. My copy is ex-library, so no booklet and there is a label over much of the information, but it is 2001, 'Mastered at ZXY...', in a black gatefold sleeve. Can't see the distributor's name - the label is impossible to remove.
-
I'd be curious to hear the answer to that also... Try the last 30 seconds of track 2.

Bob Dylan. Theme Time Radio Hour shows.

Thanks. Maybe the piano after all as it is carried on to the cd.
