ESTHER GROENENBERG Esther Groenenberg is preparing a CD that will be released in the summer of 2009. She announced last weekend that one of the video clips, that belongs to her new song Oh Meisje ( = Oh Little Girl), has been released and is available now. The song itself, the voice of Esther, reminds me to Fay Lovsky, the Dutch vocalist, who is one of my favorite singers. Oh Meisje Keep swinging Durium

PHILIP CATHERINE It is his first solo album and that makes this album very special, as I remember Philip Catherine always playing in small groups. A few weeks after he had finished his last recordings for this album I heard him playing at the International Jazz Festival in Middelburg, May 2007 with his trio featuring Philip Aerts on bass and Mimi Verderama on drums. During this concert he played some solo pieces he had recorded for this album, using a pre-recorded guitar fragment, he had recorded on stage in the first part of the tune and replayed it as a second voice in the second half; so in fact he played a duo with himself !! A great concert ..... Last Friday, the 11th of July 2008, I heard him at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam .The audience liked it and were listening as quiet as a mouse, although regarding the background noise outside Guitars Two Keep swinging Durium

RON CARTER Previous to this concert was an interview by Dan Quellette with Ron Carter and the members of the quartet in the Volga. Dan Quellette had organized this as a Question & Answer between the three members of the band and their maestro, as Rolando Morales-Matos, Puerto Rico born, labelled Ron in his first question. One of the questions was how it is possible that you always can recognize Ron's bass sound, even when he is not playing on his own double bass. Ron explained that it is very difficult to take your own bass while on tour. "I pay three times the airfare when I take my own instrument with me", Ron explained, "I have to play now on the "bass de jour", the double bass available on the band stand. Normally I only change the tail pin and the pickup, to amplify the sound." Ron explains the different types of strings he has used in the past and nowadays (at home he still uses his 1959 bass used in the Miles Davis Quintet) and about the use of pickup. "I meet my "bass de jour" normally twenty minutes before the concert, so....." Ron Carter - Bass de Jour Keep swinging Durium

NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTVAL Rotterdam (The Netherlands) Visiting the North Sea Jazz Festival is for most of us like visiting the Bijenkorf, a well known Dutch chain of department stores. You love to have some new pair of socks to replace old ones and on your way to the men’s wear department you have to go through the book shop and the jewellery department and in stead of a pair of socks you buy a book and a necklace for your girl friend. That's how North Sea Jazz feels. I posted some impressions from the first festival day: Friday the 11th of July . Keep swinging Durium

BILLY COBHAM Billy Cobham, born in May 1944 in Panama, but raised in New York City is one of the best percussionist in the world, they say. I don't know if this is true, but a fact is that he is still a sought after percussionist. His first performances were with his father at the piano and after he finished high school and his military services at the army he started as a drummer in the Horace Silver Quintet; nothing less than that. KENNY BURRELL Kenny Burrell recorded this Soul Call album in the Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs with a quintet featuring himself on the guitar, Will Davis on piano, Bill Gene English on drums, Martin Rivera on bass and Ray Barreto on conga. The tracklist contains 7 tunes (the original Prestige only six) and I liked Soul Call and Mark One, two blues themes. It brings us some solid jazz guitar played by a skilled improviser, good to play in the background when you have visitors or to dream away ...... Soul Call Keep swinging Durium

LIONEL HAMPTON That evening the audience liked the rhythms and danced and jived all together, with the result that they felt through the floor of the Apollo Hall and the complete interior became a mess. What a shame ...... everybody cried shame over it. A shame for a society of hard working decent people. Police Stops Hampton Madness Keep swinging Durium

EDDIE BRUNNER ET SON ORCHESTRE Seventy years ago, on the 13th of June 1938, Oscar Alemán took part as a sideman in a recording session in Paris for the Swing label. The five recorded sides belong to the most memorable recordings made by Oscar Alemán at his stay in Europe, although he only has a brief solo on MONTMARTRE BLUES, which is one of his first recorded solos showing off his unique concept of jazz guitar playing.
