Funny; at about the time you posted this, I was reaching for the same record but ultimately pulled out New Ideas (on a NJ original) instead. The French traditional jazz scene seems to be one of the most interested ones of Europe. What to think about bands like the Hot Antic Jazz Band, Les Petit Jazzband de Mr. Morel or his latest ensemble Les Rois du Foxtrot. And don't forget, decades ago, successes by bands like Charquet et Co and the Orpheon Celesta. Most of these bands loved to play the US jazz- and dance music from the 20s and 30s. Les Pommes de ma Doucher, five swinging men, revives the music as played by Django Reinhardt and Gus Viseur - hot club music and musettes. Great stuff, which becomes fresh and new when these five men take their instruments. Keep swinging reviewed for you its latest album entiteld Five Men Swinging. Annette Hanshaw's career had a brief recording span for almost eight years. When she started her career in 1926 she was 25 years old, but she was billed as a young 16 year flapper girl. Even decades later, when she spoke to Brian Rust late 1950s she preserved up to be born in 1910. Maybe she wanted to keep up the myth of her eternal youth or she was ruled by a selective memory. Well never mind - her great voice and charisma is still fascinating numerous (aged) jazz fans. Annette Hanshaw: I hated those records Durium

I have used some info from that interview and I will use these private recordings in the second part: Annette Hanshaw: I Hated Those Records later next week ...... Durium

When I first heard the rather childlike voice of Annette Hanshaw and I saw her pictures I fell in love ........... and I still am. My first acquaintance must have been one of those Fountain / Retrieval albums released in the 1980s thanks to the research of discographer and record collector Brian Rust. He located her late 1950s in New York as Mrs. Annette Rose, a widow working as a stenographer in a firm of lawyers. She was exactly as charming, shy and somewhat bewildered as might have been expected, Brian remembered. Enough reasons to spotlight her ..... Annette Hanshaw - a great vocalist remembered Durium

The trio seems to be the most common organization form in jazz. If you don't know what happens if all three members are equally skilled improvisers, you should listen to Destinations, the latest album by pianist Tamir Hendelman and his rhythm section. This talented piano player, composer and arranger tours along European venues and schools to promote his latest album Destinations at concerts and clinics. Tamir Hendelman - Destinations Durium

Jan Verwey complains in the liner notes of his first CD-album You Must Believe In Spring, about the fact that he feels he has to prove himself. Each time critics mention the name of that other harmonica player, Mr. T. He has to explain too that his instrument, the chromatic harmonica, is very hard to play. If you have heard Jan Verwey's music you won't join this discussion anymore, as Jan's music is unequalled, original and very swinging. A week ago his latest album was presented, recorded together with piano player Bert van den Brink. Jan Vervey and that endless discussion Durium

The story of the snapshot of little four-years old Cassandra on the back of the pony, dressed as a cowboy, symbolizes her strong ambitions: ........ wearing a cowboy hat, bandana around the neck, reins in hand, sitting proudly in the saddle, barely sensing then but knowing ful well now what that move meant. Cassandra Wilson named her latest album Silver Pony to this early shapshot - a selection of tunes which will surprises you ..... Cassandra Wilson - Silver Pony Durium

Django Reinhardt was born 100 years ago in a caravan at the shantytown in Walloon (Belgium). Le Jazz Manouche Anno 2010 directed by Joep Peeters honoured the music of Django at a concert in Dongen, in the south of the Netherlands, with a large band featuring some great musicians like Fapy Lafertin, Koen De Cauter and Robert Veen, an homage to the music of Django - a historical and legendary event. The tunes on the latest album by Chris Beckers were, in fact, all improvisations he made on his guitar and later worked out together with leading (Dutch) jazz musicians like Eric Vloeimans, Jasper van't Hof, Marcel Serierse and Mike del Ferro. The American rhythm section with Jimmy Haslip and Simon Phillips formed a solid base; enough elements for a many-sided album, attractive for a large audience. Seven Frames of Mind Durium

Twenty-five years ago, November 1985, Joe Henderson and his trio, featuring Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on double bass and Al Foster on drums performed three days at the famous Village Vanguard in New York City. These concerts were recorded and released by Blue Note and still belong, together with the Sonny Rollins Village Vanguard concert of November 1957, the Coltrane Village Vanguard recordings of November 1961 and the Chick Corea Blue Note Club recordings from 1998, to the best live recordings in Jazz ever. | Years ago Rein De Graaff organized a small tour with US alto saxophone players Gary Foster, Lee Konitz and their young Dutch colleague Marco Kegel dedicated to the music of Lennie Tristano - Fifteen years later (almost) the same musicians gave a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands with Gary Foster and Marco Kegel. Most concerts stay unrecorded, but sometimes you wished that it was ........... In the opening track, Jubilee, of the new album by the Veen-Goetz-Tegler band, the trio strikes the right chord as an honour to the bass sax, the instrument that plays the first fiddle in the album. This monstrous instrument is not often heard in Jazz nowadays and that's a shame. Together with stride-piano player Mike Goetz and drummer Brooks Tegler Three Men in a Beat has become a great album, a tribute to the great trios in Jazz. Everybody has heard about the American Songbook; it inspired generations of jazz musicians. But what about the Dutch musical heritage? Do we have a Dutch Songbook? Jan Menu and Jasper Soffers wondered that, put their heads together and selected almost a dozen Dutch tunes that should be part of their Dutch Songbook. If you listen to the album, you wonder .. Why wasn't this done before? The arrangements sound fresh and new and I think that it's only a matter of time, but once foreign jazz bands may swap roles and make albums dedicated to the Dutch Songbook! On Saturday afternoon the 24th of October, 2010 Catherine Russell, Cat for friends, performed at a small in-shop concert at The Drvkkery in Middelburg in the southwest part of The Netherlands. This year the music world commemorates the Centennial of Django Reinhardt's birth and there has already been numerous events, concerts and cd releases to celebrate the musical genius of this unique artist. Django!! - A Tribute is one of those cd's released - a remarkable one. The cd is a result of a project, properly named DjanGo!, initiated by the Belgian De Cauter family group of musicians who has been deeply involved in preserving, performing and renewing the music of Django Reinhardt for many years. Head of the family, Koen De Cauter, started in 1975 the famous Waso Quartet (named after his first born son) which resulted in a true revival of the Hot Club music. Catherine Russell launched her first album under her own name when she was gone fifty - this year her third album Inside This Heart of Mine was released. Before that she was active as a back ground singer on numerous pop albums, but now, on this turning point in her life, she seems to follow in her parents footsteps: singing jazz music. Catherine Russell, daughter of the legendary band leader Luis Russell and Carline Ray, member of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. She's not one of those ten a penny vocalists, as she knows her roots and loves to share it on her album. Catherine Russell: Inside This Heart of Mine Durium

During the 1950s and 1960s the baritone saxophone was played by musicians like Pepper Adams, Gerry Mulligan, Serge Chaloff and Leo Parker - all giants on their instrument. Chris Joris Experience Marie's Momentum (W.E.R.F. 084 ) Chris Joris is with his Experience one of the leading groups of Belgium for years. Years ago he became fascinated by the rhythms of Africa and South America and used it in his band in an era in which the name world music wasn't invented. His latest album, Marie's Momentum, recorded with Belgium jazz men only, is a pure jazz album and Joris creates with his rhythmical drive the ideal circumstances for his bandmates to develop.
