GER VAN LEEUWEN Old 78rpm gramophone records are almost vanished from junkshops and jumble sales and if you find spome, the quality of the records might be worse. But sometimes you can find a hidden treasure inside a pile of records - one which seemed to be uninteresting, happened to surprise you .... like the Kwartet Ger Van Leeuwen. LOUIS VOLA If you hear the Quintet of the Hot Club de France playing, you will think about Django Reinhardt and his pal Stephane Grappelli. This world famous Quintet gave Europe his own sound. But where did it come from? How was it founded? Georg Lankester informs you: about how Louis Vola, bass player and bandleader, brought the musicians together, which resulted in some very famous recordings of a unique quintet. FRITS LANDESBERGEN QUARTET ( Frits Landesbergen ) Frits Landesbergen performed lately with his quartet at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in the southwest part of The Netherlands. More then twenty years ago he was unable to join a New Year concert at this club with the Trio Pim Jacobs, due to sever winter conditions. With Ik kreeg mijn auto met geen mogelijkheid de dijk op ( = It was impossible to get my car at the top of the dike) he refered to the bad conditions. Ik ben blij dat ik eindelijk een keer hier kan spelen (= I'm happy to play here today - finally.....), he told the audience.- Last week I accompanied Monty Alexander and he prided the club's warm atmosphere! NELSON LATIF He often played the guitar only with his left hand, which is to say, he made the sounds only on the neck of the guitar. He did this with the greatest naturalness. He played whatever piece looking towards the sky, towards a wall, not paying attention to the neck of the guitar. Hev had a fingering and quality that until today I have not seen ( Leal and Barbosa refering to João Fernambuco) The Brazilian - Dutch guitar and cavaquinho player Nelson Latif released a tribute to this great legendary Choro composer and guitarist João Pernambuco entitled Nelson Latif: tributo a João Pernambuco Durium

CHARQUET & Co Charquet & Co is one of those bands, who impressed traditional jazz fans during the 1970s. The music of Jean-Pierre Morel and his men, sounded like his 1920s ancestors without copying it. Late 1970s Jean-Pierre Morel stopped to perform - the recordings from May 1978 at the Internationales Dixieland-Festival Dresden '78 and in Nantes (La France) were the band's last. Fans had to wait for twenty years when Le Petit Jazzband de Mr. Morel was founded. Charquet & Co. - Live in Holland (1976-1977) Durium

THE RAMBLERS In years of dance-going, I have heard and danced to the music of America's finest orchestras, but it is my opinion that your orchestra plays the most danceable musical arrangements I have ever heard. Your "presentations" are the equal of the superior arrangements of Fred Waring's orchestra, which plays fine choral arrangements but does not play dance music. ( Edward F. Kennedy, special advisor of the American Military Service in Bavaria (Germany)) in a leter to Theo Uden Masman, the leader of the band (ca. 1949) De Ramblers: Recordings from a post-war Brussels Durium

CONGO JAZZ - BLUE FLAMINGO ( Excel96202 ) Like David Livingstone in the nineteenth century discovered the inland of dark Africa, Ziya Ertekin, aka Blue Flamingo, introduces us to still undiscovered treasures of long gone times on vulnerable 78-rpm records. In his latest mix, Congo Jazz, he tells about the popularity of Cuban music in the centre of Africa, jungle music as critics called it years ago and about the birth of gospel music thanks to Tommy A. Dorsey. In the first mix he offers some catching dance music from the 1930s: Jungle Crawl Congo Jazz: A musical expedition Durium

THOM KELLING Thom Kelling was for me the first artist I heard in a live concert mid 1960s ... After the concert all my friends stood in line to get his autograph ... so did I !! He came to Goes ( in the southwest part of The Netherlands), a small city near by, to give a schoolconcert. I don't remember the concert itself, but I still feel that thrilling excitement getting his autograph .... Thom Kelling: A Dutch Latino Durium

RICK MARGITZA - IVAN PADUART TRIO Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen Sunday afternoon 7th of February 2010 Tenor saxophonist Rick Margitza performed with the Ivan Paduart Trio in a concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the south west part of The Netherlands, on the 7th of February, 2010. It was a pity that the name of Rick Margitza, who played with great names like Maynard Ferguson, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner and Miles Davis didn't guarantee a full house: half of the seats of the club were empty. And Ivan Paduart, Philippe Aerts and Mimi Venderame too, belong to the best in Belgian jazz. Keep swinging Durium

SATCHMO'S SECRET In December 1965 Steve Allen invited Louis Armstrong in his program "I've Got a Secret". Guests should bring in a secret and the members of the panel had to guess, asking questions, what the secret was ….... Satchmo's secret is, that he brought in his first cornet and ....... behind the curtains he will be united with his first trumpet teacher, after more then 50 years: Peter Davis.......... SVEND ASMUSSEN photo: Svend Asmussen archive RHYTHM IS OUR BUSINESS Storyville 101 8389 photo: Svend Asmussen archive Svend Asmussen is one of those musicians, although in his 90s, who is still active nowadays. These records, presented today, were special selected by him - showing him during his most popular period as one of the star entertainers of northern Europe. It is strange that his fame never spread around the world as he is one of those artists that should be mentioned between names like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Thelonious Monk. DJANGO REINHARDT In January 2010 we commemorate the fact that Django Reinhardt, gypsy genius on the frets, was born 100 years ago. The music world suddenly had lost a unique guitar genius, but his legend and legacy has affectionately been taken care of by numerous jazz fans and other musicians till this day. Django's music will remain an important contribution to jazz. ( Jørgen Larsen) Django Reinhardt 100; The postwar years Keep swinging Durium
