  1. 17 september 2010 Hein Van de Geyn: Farewell concert Jack van Poll Three-oh Jack Van Poll - Hein Van de Geyn- Hans Van Oosterhout Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen (The Netherlands) Hein Van de Geyn stops playing ............ Forever! This announcement, a half year ago, came as a real bombshell. Last Friday Hein said farewell to the audience of the Porgy en Bess club in Terneuzen ( south west part of The Netherlands) where he has performed so many times. It seemed as if he played better than ever ... At this farewell concert in the small intimate Porgy en Bess club he impressed with an emotional solo at the end of the concert. Later this week he will take formal leave to the Dutch jazzscene with a concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Thanks Hein for the music! Hein Van de Geyn: Farewell concert in Porgy en Bess Durium

  3. This is the most swinging' album I've heard in a very long time, Bob Stoloff writes in the liner notes, and he's an expert, being the author of the book Scat. And she is really a great scat singer, who listened to the great examples Ella Fitzgerald and Sara Vaughan. A swinging jazz record, with one of the best scat singers from Western Europe with both feet into the 1950s and 1960s. A fresh sound between all those glamourfull jazzy pop vocalists we have to loisten to, now-a-days .... Sanna van Vliet: Dance On The Moon Durium
  4. Frank Morgan is one of those legends in jazz that fascinate me. A few years ago I joined a concert a month before he passed away. Little Franky, as he was called in the 1950s, played with Charlie Parker, his master and model, not only from a musical point of view ............. He conquered his drug-dependence and a stroke and returned into the international jazz scene. I love to point you to a compilation of tunes he played, composed by Thelonious Monk. Frank Morgan: Peace and Love, he labeled his autograph ............ Frank Morgan plays Monk Durium
  5. Can someone help me to date this French (1970) LP. You can find the tracks in the next picture ( mine has a different reverse, but the same tracks). Please contact me directly Durium
  6. DE JAZZ PARADE - ROB VAN SCHEERS Last weekend it was five years ago that the centre of the tropical hurricane Katrina passed New Orleans and ca. 1800 people lost their lives. The effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans were long-lasting and large parts of the city are still destroyed - 80% of New Orleans was flooded, with some parts under 15 feet (4.5 m) of water. In his book Rob van Scheers returns to New Orleans, early 2009, for a search to what left of the unique culture of the city and people of New Orleans. Keep Swinging loves to point you to this book which is, unfortunally, only available in Dutch, but a must have for all Dutch-reading music fans all over the world. 7. WOLFGANG MAIWALD TRIO Wolfgang Maiwald piano - Guus Bakker bass - Joost Kesselaar drums The Wolfgang Maiwald Trio will release, in its own account, its first record, entitled Two Faces. The album contains almost a dozen tracks, most Maiwald's own compositions, played with a solid piano trio. The music will be appreciated by a large group of music fans. 8. DJANGO with his AMERICAN FRIENDS Django Reinhardt with Coleman Hawkins, Eddie South, Bill Coleman, Bennie Carter, Dicky Wells a.o. Recordings made in Paris, France, between 1935 and 1945 featuring Django Reinhardt and visiting or expatriate American musicians. A unique set of recordings that need to be spotlighted. 9. NORDIC CHORO If choro music would have been born in the Nordic countries in the late 19th century, it might be sounding like this at the beginning of the 21st. However – excepting the European ones – we didn´t have the same influences here in the North, so this is just a vision and nordic choro is an imaginary genre. Nonetheless, the group Nordic Choro is a real representative of the genre and there is no need to be too serious about different music styles. After all, music is for playing" ( Quote Jarmo Romppanen of Nordic Choro) Jo wrote about this band in Nordic Choro Durium

    Oscar Alemán

Guitars of Oscar Alemán A competent musician can play any instrument of the chosen type and make the sound his or her own, the individual musician combines the 'output' with his or her personal 'touch' and thus conducts the sound of the instrument to his or her personal taste. However, sometimes the sound of a musician is tightly connected with his or her prefered instrument, and this is just the case when considering the sound of Alemán's guitar(s). Throughout his recording career Oscar Alemán is known to have used at least two different types of guitars, the steel body National resonator model (- the Tricone, Style 2) and the Selmer-Macaferri 'D'-hole ('la grande bouche') originally favoured by Django Reinhardt. Curtis Amy

CURTIS AMY (1929-2002) A Forgotten West Coast saxophonist. Curtis Amy is one of those 1950s west coast saxophone players, original from Texas, who made a career in the film and pop music scene of the US in the bands of Ray Charles, but also performed as a member of the Doors and composer of the film music of Dirty Dancing. Thanks to some old fragments of a long forgotten TV-program you can learn that he was a great saxophone player .... Curtis Amy - A Forgotten West Coast saxophonist. Durium

  14. The Hot Five rediscovered The Best of Louis Armstrong The Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings - from the original masters ........ The Night Watch or The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq by the Dutch 17th Century painter Rembrandt or the Mona Lisa or La Gioconda from Leonardo Da Vinci (some people even visit Paris to catch a glimpse of her) belong to the world treasures of arts - no doubt about that. But what about the treasures in Jazz? What bands or tunes should be inside the Hall of Fame? Well, Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven records should - No doubt about that. I rediscovered these wonderful played tunes thanks to a 4CD Columbia album entitled The Best of Louis Armstrong: The Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings. I was amazed to learn that so many (most contemporary) jazz collectors don't know the beauty of these 85 year old recordings. What a shame ............... 15. MARIANO DI NUNZIO Trio BARRACINA SONATA a 3 + 2 Mariano di Nunzio, trumpet player and composer, released a new album with his Trio Barracina enlarged with a cellist and an alto saxophone - clarinet player. The title, Sonata a 3 + 2, broke up into five parts, suggests that it contains classical music, but nothing is further from the truth. Mario di Nunzio created with his enlarged group a balanced sound which shows what great jazz musicians they are ........ Mariano's trumpet - the sustained rhythms of the brushes and the great bass sound make, that this album will fascinate a lot of jazz fans .......... Mariano di Nunzio: new album Sonata a 3 + 2 Durium

  17. FATS WALLER on the Air 1938-Broadcasts Most of us are too young to have seen Fats Waller perform -so am I, but his concerts were indelible events - his swing, his humour and charisma are legendary. During the 1930s and early 1940s concerts and radio broadcasts were almost scheduled daily. We still can listen to his records, but only few radio broadcasts have survived. Thanks to Stephen Taylor, author of the book Fats Waller on the Air ( The Radio Broadcasts and discography), we can now enjoy some unreleased 1938 broadcasts. Great stuff ......... 19. MARTY PAICH The record shops, if you can find one, are glutted with cheap reissues from the 1950s and 1960s - Jazz is in the sale ....... It feels like fight a losing battle, although jazz fans can grasp their chances. I bought a cheap prized Art Pepper box in which I found a reissue of the Marty Paich Quartet ( featuring Art Pepper), which originally was released on Tampa. The sound of Art Pepper fascinated me, but I became interested in his piano player Marty Paich, whose name is closely involved in West Coast jazz albums, like the great Art Pepper + Eleven "Modern Jazz Classic". Marty Paich: Creator of the West Coast sound Durium
  20. WILLEM BREUKER 1944-2010 Last weekend one of the leading Dutch jazzmusicians of Europe and its surroundings passed away. Maybe I should change the word jazz as this flag doesn't cover the cargo - his music couldn't be pigeon-holed that easy; he was a creator of Mensenmuziek ( = Men's Music.). He founded his Kollektief more then 35 years ago to play his own music as a counterbalance to the popular music, idiot's music, he called it, radio and tv offered mankind. His music developed from free jazz ( labeled by opponents as Piep-Knars-Knor music) into the so-called improvised music or New Dutch Swing. His concerts surprised or shocked, but the audience always left with a smile on its face. Willem Breuker (1944-2010): Creator of Men's Music Durium

  22. JOHAN BIJKERK It must have been one of the last LPs I bought in the post-LP period. During the 1980s I sold all my 33rpm recordings as new modern techniques like digital records promised better sounds ..... and all analog albums would be digitalized once. Well, it seems that each person has his weak moments during lifetime, so I have to live with that. Now, thirthy years later, I've learned that not all valuable records are reissued, so, my collection of LPs is growing again..... I played the Almelo- en Nice Suite composed by the piano player of The Almelo Hot Dogs: Johan Bijkerk. I remember how it surprised me ( and the Dutch Traditional Jazz scene) thirty years ago and felt the same excitement playing it last month .... Johan Bijkerk: Dutch composer of Suites Durium
  23. PAULO MOURA 1932-2010 The Brazilian clarinet player Paulo Moura has passed away on July 12 following a cancer desease (lymphoma), 77 years of age. The sad news was announced at his official website by André Vallias and since then obituaries and appraisal articles have been published both in Brazil and the rest of the world. The music world has lost one of its greatest instrumentalists on the contemporary scene. ( Jørgen ) Paulo Moura (1932-2010) Durium
  24. ERROLL GARNER Concert By The Sea Erroll Garner's Concert By The Sea is one of those records that should be in any record collection. It became, although recorded on a simple reel-to-reel tape recorder - the sound quality was not good at all, a million seller in the 1950s. Concert By The Sea is a flawed monument of perfection. This recording was a dichotomy, a paradox, where the unlearned not only prevail, but create art of a lasting quality. This is the art. ( Michael Bailey) Erroll Garner - Concert By The Sea: a million seller Durium
  25. PAUL VAN KEMENADE - STEVKO BUSCH Contemplation Paul van Kemenade's discography contains dozens of recordings and he was involved in numerous projects. A few months ago a new record was released - Contemplation - in duo with the German piano player Stevko Busch. They were inspired by songs, Russian Chants and miniatures. Stevko Busch - Paul van Kemenade: Contemplation. Contemplation Durium
