A lot of good stuff here. I would highly recommend (insist, basically) Michel Lambert's "Out Twice" (mp3s and reviews here) -it's on page 3 of the bargains list. Thanks for posting this! They have some fantastic discs on sale. Too bad I already own a lot of the ones I would want to pick up. Has enyone here heard Kent Kessler's solo disc and have a recommendation pro or con? I did a search for it (typing the title in the search field and displaying results as posts) - you'll find a lukewarm review of Nate Dorward's. Any recommendations? I have the McPhee, and I might be interested in the Hal Russell and Bobby Few, but most of these artists are more or less unknown to me. ubu LAMBERT! LAMBERT! LAMBERT!!!!!! Flurin, keep in mind that Drimala does not help with customs arrangements, so you are likely to pay taxes if the order (including shipping) is more than Sfr. 50.

I'll try to come to this one as well.
  3. The compositions are excellent, but Ornette's solos seem to be absolutely the same to me here. Blackwell is on fire here. Good remaster.

I found I do have a CD with Assif Tsahar in my collection: Andy McWain Quartet "Starfish" (Fuller Street Music, 2002). Started listening to it, but got annoyed by third track. Just empty dead bullshit. Tsahar has chops, though. Gonna listen to some Romanian folk music instead before going out (as Tony kindly relieved me of the honorable duty to listen to the 7PM (EST) radion show tonight). Was in Romania recently (and what a run-down country it is, my friends) and picked up a couple of CDs. Should be good. Also, listened to some of the HARRRRDOCORRRRRE Jazz (as understood by Universal Japan: LINK), namely Sun Ra "It's After The End Of The World" (recorded live in 1970), and this is some good stuff! Now, I am not the biggest Sun Ra fan out there - I feel a lot of stuff is too sloppy, and his 80s-90s stuff tends to fall into a somehwat predictable routine - but the best stuff (like Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra VOl. I (ESP)) is phenomenal, IMO, and this record is one of the best Sun Ra I've heard. There is quite a bit of free blowing by Gilmore and Allen, and a lot of tinkering with electric keyboard (which I like). Some humorous (and rather short) recitation as well. And the sound of this Japanese reissue is excellent. As there is never enough of HARRRRDCORRRRRE Jazz, I picked up all of the series (except for Don Cherry, since I already have this disc in less hardcore edition), so I'll be reporting soon. Regarding Sun Ra, I would encourage everybody to check out the Solo Piano Recital (Leo) released a couple of years ago. Really surprising stuff (and more interesting than other solo Sun Ra releases).

Mwah, it's only 5:50 PM over here right now. Yeah, time to go to bed to be fresh and rested by the 7pm (EST) radio show. Sunday, David. Sunday! Maybe we could get Flurin to record each weakly three hour show and then he could disperse sets all over the globe. John (couw) could do the artwork! Ahh, darts.... Sunday. Thanks Tony. Otherwise, I would have been listening to a show today at 7pm (EST) and would have surely become a Hank Mobley fan just because I would have assumed this is the latest hatOLOGYLeoEMANEM release. And yes, I agree regarding commanding ubu to record the shows - the man is in constant need of recording, burning and shipping out something - does not matter what.

Not unless we make two versions: one for adults and one for all ages. "Funny Rat - A grown-up's guide to [add attribute of your choice] music" Sounds good to me. The only thing, some (most?) would argue about the "music" part of the title, so I woulsd leave it open. Or we can put "?" at the end.

It will also be acocmpanied by a multi-volume hard-cover Complete Funny Rat Transcriptions (with original spelling intact), with comprehensive index (that Hans is working on), indivual posters' taste evolution trees (like Chaney's unimpressive flirting with eai - the story of constant doubt and apprehension, or on a degenerative side - John B's and Д.Д.'s heavy metal deviations), list of naive innocent victums (Clunky buying Gebbia's "Arcana Major"), and illustrated biographies of all participants.

I would be interested in hearing more Lacy of this type. I have quite few of Lacy CDs (alhough what is "quite a few" when it comes to Lacy's discography? I have 20 or so CDs - it is about 5% of his output, I guess), but most of them are solos-duos-trios, and this large band recording shows a totally new aspect of Lacy's approach to me.

Mengelberg is skippable, IMO. Gregorio I found too dry and academic - will have to listen to it some more. McPhee is essential. ICP is very very good. Eskelin & Braxton I haven't listened to yet. As I mentioend, I hv a spare copy of Braxton's "Basel" available, so let me know if you hve problems findng it.

    Free America

Believe it or not, amazon.de and amazon.fr will ship to the US. Also, I am sure that DMG and Dustry Grooves in the US will carry those.
  20. They're called Bols. There is an interesting example of bols (even if in somewhat simplified form) within a jazz (or jazz-fusion, if you will) context on Subramaniam's disc which is titled "Seventh something (wave?)" on Milestones. There two percussionists have a sort of fire-spitting "duel" using bols technique at the same time. Sounds exilirating - my favorite moment on this (not bad) CD.

Digipacks. Universal France website says these will be limited editions.
  22. This one is good, if not the best AEoC, IMO. Lester is not playing that much here. unfortunately. For the new Pi one, I will porbably skip it. The previous one The Meeting was quite weak, and this new one is from the same session, so it's hard to expect it would be much better. As a reminder, three AEoC AMerica recordings (Phase One, With Fontella Bass and Certain Blacks) wil be reisues by EmArcy France in a couple of weeks:

I'm in two minds about Clichés. At one time I kinda like it (though it's not even close to Lacy's best albums), at another time I don't care for it at all. And then there's Irène Aebi's vocalizing, which I'm not exactly a fan of... I thought Clichés was absolutely fantastic, with very strong compositions (sounding as if they were written specifically for the featured band, so shocase all of their powerful abilities) and exciting solos, particularly from George Lewis. As far as I remember, there is not that much of Aebi vocals there. ------------------- Regarding Carlo Actis Dato - I got a fresh SIC Trio CD (yes, it's on Leo, you got it) - a three-reed band. I'll report here when I listen to it. ------------------- Gokhan, let us know what you think of AALY's "Stumble" - as I mentioned, I found it less entertaining than I Wonder If I Was Screaming, though still good.

I always come to attention when David issues a friendly recommendation, especially on an OOP title. Just ordered ARP Music along with three other Leo OOPs: Carlo Actis Dato: Urartu Lauren Newton & Joelle Leandre: 18 Colors Robert Dick: Worlds of If Well, I relieve myself of any responcibility for these three. Carlo Actis Dato is a fantastic musician with abundant technique, but in projects under his own name, he tends to overdo it quite a bit. I much more prefer him as a sideman (e.g. with IIO). Leandre/Newton - I would assume Leandre contributes quite a lot of vocalizing here, and her vocal is something I can take in limited doses only (it is great on her recent "For Flowers" (on Leo as well) - very much in the context, and in sync with the ensemble playing, adding additional dark flavor to the music - but then, it is limited to a couple minutes on one track only. Robert Dick for me is the same story as Dato - admirable, even unique technique, but a lot of it boils down to a bags-of-tricks display, IMO (talking about flutists, I very much prefer Carlos Bechegas solo project, also on Leo, believe it or not - that's where you see unorthodox flute techniques applied to create something original. Thinking about it, Bechegas might be my favorite modern flutist). Now, I haven't heard any of these three CDs, so these are merely my speculations. Let us know what you think of them.

Thanks Gokhan. -------------------------- Friends, I see that Leo CD of Akemi Kuniyoshi / Russell Lambert / Paul Moss "ARP Music" is now OOP, and I would encourage you to get your hands on it it is beautiful lyrical free music. One of my favorite Leo CDs. I will add more when I get back home and relisten to it. http://www.leorec.com/?m=select&id=LeoLab_004 Hey, Thom Jurek himself also thinks this is onee of the best Leo Records releases: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&s...8x6ompej9f8o~T1
