Flurin, Regarding your difficult Leo choices. 1. All Moscow Composers Orchestra discs are a must! These are some of the best Russian musicians (musicians from Russia, to put it more correctly) and compositions by Vladimir Miller are both interesting and leave enough space for soloing. If you haven't heard Sainkho Namchulak, you are in for a suprise - to me she is THE vocalist of the improvised music. 2. Guyvoronsky/Petrova is one of my favorite Leo discs. Guyvoronsky is a unique trumpeter with excellent technique (somewhat (but only somewhat) similar to Lester Bowie AND Kenny Wheeler), and a very talented composer and stylist, and this is some dark, melodic, emotioanal and honest music. 3. Denzler is excellent - grab it without hesitation. 4. Collective 4tet I like a lot, as I mentioned earlier. As I understand you have one of their discs - the other are more-or-less in the same vein. 5. Ganelin's Trio Alliance is to my mind better than many of the "classic" Ganelin Trio records, and a rare opportunity to hear monster saxophonist Petras Vysniauskas (if there is a his own Leo disc available, buy it as well!). 6. Karayorgis is a very good one - very interestng pianist and Randy Peterson is a formidable drummer. 7. Many of these are quite mediocre, IMO: Locomotive Konkret, Trio Finlandia (mindless noodling), Nagl (annoying vocals!), Doran/Brennan (somewhat cheesy melodic "romantic" stuff - definitely very listenable, and to an extent enjoyable, but I doubt you'll want to listen to it more than once), Sa Zna (musique concrete - type of thing, pretty boring). 8. The rest I either don't have or don't remember. Maslak/Bley could be good. Maslak is a very muscular allo saxophone player with very nice sound and is quite anjoyable, if a bit one-dimensional (I like his other Leo disc - Mother Russia - there is more variety there as the tracks are recorded with different Russian musicians (there is a particualrly strong duo with magnificent Anatoly Vapirov who has actually quite a similar raspy sound on alto, but is a more diverse musician). Carlo Actis Dato is of course a phenomenal musician, but I prefer him as a sideman - his solo projects I heard I find quite tastless and exessive (this one you ask about I don't know). Russian-German Composers Quartet I listened to only once, and don't remember it well (there is a nice Zappa tune cover on it, I think). Tamura is some extreme extended technique trumpet solo, which didn't grab me on the firt listen, but I have to spend more time with it. Remote Viewers are definitely fun decadent stuff. That's it, I guess.

I have a disc by this (or very similar - not sure about the drummer) rocking combo on In Situ label (I think it is called "Periferia"). I tired to listen to it once and thought it was very static and sluggish - no development whatsoever. Will give it another listen soon. On the other hand, the duo of Daunik Lazro - Carlos Zingaro "Hauts Plateaux" (Potlatch) is stunning - one of my favorite releases of ... whichevcr year that was - and quite dynamic and even vilent at times (and hauntingly beatiful at other times). You know what, I'd better re-listen to this one, if you do not mind. --------------------------------- Tony, surely you are working on some highly-sophisticated statistical analysis at the moment?
  6. Nabatov is gettting stronger and stronger with years, IMO. His last year duo with Han Bannink ("Chat Room") on Leo is fantastic (much more interesting than Nabatov's (good) trio hatOLOGY disc, for example).
  7. Uncharacteristically for amazon.de - (really) next day shipping on these ones! Ordered Baker, Brookmeyer, Cohn/Sims, Farmer and Kessel. Together with some Megadeth remasters.
  8. Far as I know he's writing liner notes for Club releases featuring his era of KC. Hope he is playing some saxophone in his spare time as well.
  9. Now isn't Mel Collins a phenomenal saxophonist! What is he up to these days, btw? Gonna go and listen to "Ladies of the Road" CD now.

Listening to the Crunchy channel of American Mavericks radio - there is a very interesting 20-minute piece of Nick Didkovsky's Doctor Nerve (website). There are some samples of the disc I am listenig to here. Anybody's familiar with them?

Nope, but as I said, I listened to his London Jazz Fest 04 concert (or parts of it, 55 or 60 minutes), and I like that well enough to consider getting into Braxton a bit... will spin them soon! If you decide to start exploring Braxton a few of his Hat's (Basel and Dortmund) are mid-priced now and excellent starting points. The quartet sets on Leo (Coventry, Birmingham, London) are also fantastic. Dortmund I have, for the Basel I'd be happy for pointers, seems gone... ubu I have a spare copy, don't worry.

That's Phase One, which is the best of these three AEoC reissues. Excellent sound quality as well. I wish there was more material available from these sessions. Flurin, you listened to Braxton yet?

I am listening to this one for the first time right now! It's a 2003 Japanese Universal Hardcore Jazz reissue with four bonus tracks (making it a 76-minute disc): http://www.universal-music.co.jp/jazz/hard...z/uccu9021.html I am only 1/4 into it so far, and loving it already! Probably to an extent due to flawless sound, I'm finally hearing what Bailey is doing. And the guys he is playing with are amazing - Kondo I knew, but this Kaoru Abe guy - wheew, this might be some of the most intense and insane alto saxophone work I've ever heard! Gotta explore more Abe (excellent EUgene Chadbourne write up on Abe).

Hmm, surely there is something wrong with your CD copy - no new-agey sound on mine. Sorry you didn't like it. Give it one more listen one of these days. And you can't consider youself relieved of responsibility for formal announcements - you started the whole thing, after all. But it's still a bit eraly, anyway. ---------------------------------- How is the Arch Duo?

Patience, gentlemen. I see that market sellers at amazon.de are already offering new copies of those for €12 ($16), so quite soon affordable copies will make their way across the Atlantic. By next Chrstmas you'll all have your copies of cheap Free America CDs.

Was not on my agenda (wanted to spend more time with those PHENOMENAL FRee AMercia reissues ), but we are an improvisation-prone bunch here, so I will give it a spin later tonight. ---------------------------------- Meanwhile, listened to another Aki Takase Leo disc: Dempa Band: Nine Fragments, and this one does not disappoint either. Will give it a couple more listens, and will expand here. AMG review

Flurin, did you get all the Free America reissues? I cannot find Braxton CDs in stores here...

Even if they are not issued in the US, European versions will be around for quite some time (looks like there were 5000 copes pressed, so 5-6 years of circulation for sure), so you'll be definitely able to find them cheap eventually. -------------------------------- Just finished listening to Art Ensemble of Chicago - "Certain Blacks", and what can I say - this is an excellent one. All you can expact from AEoC - passion, humor, musicality, groove, complexity, directness, constant surprise, and a lot of life is there. Sould quality is excellent. Again a very short recording - 35 minutes.
