No info in the press release. It just says: "23 Standards" by Braxton's quartet. Could this be a compilation of the Braxton-Hemingway-Crispell-Dresser concert recordings (Leo seems to like this band a lot)? I want to hear some Braxtone'd Monk - he did a nice job on his mid-80s "Six Monk's Compositions" (Black Saint /Soul Note).

Received a newsletter from Leo Records (Webpage). A lot of good news. 1. Six new April releases (soon to be listed on the Leo website), including Frank Gratkowski quartet (looks liek the same one as on last year's "Spectral Reflections", Joelle Leandre quartet with Mat Manery, Fonda/Stevens group with Daunik Lazro (!) and others. As always, there is a buy 3 - get 1 free, buy 4 - get 2 free deal for new releases. 2. Projected May releases: fresh Ganelin Trio concert recording, Simon Nabatov Trio, 4-CD (!) Braxton "standards" box, Wally Shoup trio (last year's Wally Shoup trio CD on Leo was fantastic) and Eugene Chadbourne. Not bad.

directly from Leo. Shipping is only about $2, regardless of how many discs are ordered. Yeah, and there are only 500 copies of it.

Amir, are you talking about LP/Konnex releases or Japanese edition - or both? if Japanese editions don't offer any significant sound improvement, I'll go for Konnex CDs - they can be found pretty cheap...

John, I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you liked Guyvoronsky (and how can one possibly not like him!?), I would highly recommend his other work on Leo: Choniy Together ( http://www.leorecords.com/?m=select&id=CD_LR_268 ) - a duo with accordeonist and (a little bit) vocalist Evelin Petrova. It's different in mood from the duo with Volkov - less jazzy and more somber. Also there is an absolutely stunning (and really scary) Guyvoronsky's solo (with overdubbing) trumpet CD on Russian Long Arms label called For Sergey Kureokhin: http://www.avantart.com/longarms/ - there is nothing much I can write about this one - it has to be heard to be believed. Now, I know that our friend Leo Feigin has (had?) it, so you can get it from him - otherwise it will be quite hard to find... Guyvoronsky is still playing, but the last concerts of his I saw were very bad - the man seems to have run out of ideas and chops. Volkov is very active with variuous projects, but he also seems to have lost something he had when he was a teenager (when Leo recording was made) - his chops are still formidable, but that's all that he seems to be interested in displaying now... As for Kureokhin, I consider the man to be one of the most interesting pianists ever - in the same league as Cecil and Paul Bley, IMO (regular correction for slight exaggeration applies). He has a lot of records out, many suck big deal - but his solo stuff is.. phew.. Unfortunately looks like his solo record on Leo Some Combination of Fingers and Passion is OOP - but Leo promises to reprint it as soon as he has "some money"... When you get to the forth disc of the set, you'll discover Anatoly Vapirov a mighty mighty saxophonist (think Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, really). Now, he has his own little label called AVA: http://www.vsjf.com/ava-frameset-1024x768_E.htm with some very very nice releases on it (including a saxophone quartet recording with our hero Gianni Gebbia). OK, enough for now.

According to Southport Records website (http://www.chicagosound.com/) a duo CD of Roscoe Mitchell and Tatsu Aoki is being prepared. Nice.

Not yet, but I'm waiting for some JON JANG albums where FRANCIS WONG is feature. I'm going to explore soon this asian/american connexion. I hope you are not starting with Jang's Immigrant Suite 1. - Island (Soul Note) - I found this poetry/jazz thing absolutely unlistenable... As for Francis Wong, I would highly recommend his Great Wall (Asian Improv) - very high quality "spiritual" post-bop (Sanders, Noah Howard, Charles Tyler... probably Billy Harper (but better, IMO)) with very interesting incorporation of Chinese elements... Also a nice reading of I Want to Talk About You, which is one of my favorite standard ballads. Excellent band - bassist and pianist particularly... Hey, I looked at the disc - pianist is actually Jon Jang himself! Jang is doing a bit of Chinese Pullen thing here The other Wong I have is called Pilgrimage (Music & Arts), and it is pretty weak, IMO - more "out" and experimental probably, but boring. As for Jang - I like his playing most on mesmerizing Beijing Trio (Asian Improv) - with Mr. Max Roach (!) and Jiebing Chen (erhu - Chinese violin/viola-like thing).

New Mattew Shipp / WIlliam Parker / Guillermo Brown release The Trio Plays Ware on Splasc(H): http://www.splaschrecords.com/news.cgi?=NEWRELEASES I'll most likely skip it... I am much more interested in the new one by Stefano Maltese Music Orchestra "Hanging in the Sky" - the band sounds impressive :Maltese, Colombo, Actis Dato, Minafra, Bonvini, Tramontana, Joseph, Fazio, Moncada, Cilio... Also an upcoming intriguing release on 577 Records: Daniel Carter / Steve Swell / Federiko Ughi: http://www.577records.com/577.html I was very impressed by gentle Carter / Ughi duo record (Astonishment, also on 577 Records) - would be interesting to see what Swell would contribute...

Agree regarding malaby - solid but not great. The new Mark Helis Open Loose "Verbs of Will" is good, but I prefer the Enja one (New School) more.

Listened to 3 tracks so far. It's good, but not poutstanding IMO. I do not feel that Drake overpowers Anderson here, but the partnership does not sound particularly successful for me - Drake tends to lock into somewhat obtrusive grooves (if nice ones), that confine Anderson a bit, IMO. Anderson is essentially a "conversational" type of musician (a bit like Lee konitz, he-he), and I think he requires a bit more flexible drumming in duo setting. Anderson is very very good, but..well...hmm... the man is basically the same on every record over the last 10 years. I already have 5-6-7 of his CDs, and after this one I don't really feel I im that interested in exploring his work any further (probably his earlier stuff?). I know, this is not what I said before... After first incomplete listen (and I am sure I will return to this record again), I still much prefer Vintage Duets (Okka) to this one (AMG review). I would be interested in hearing your opinion on comparing these two (also given that they were recorded more than 20 years apart). Vintage Duets should be a pretty safe bet: if you like Back Together Again, I don't see why you would not like it...

Some time ago I asked Dennis for recommendation for his Silkheart albums (since I don't have any) - he named all but this one, not elaborating why. I will probably get it regardless, since itlooks like I am becoming a Kidd Jordan completist...

Just listend to Scott Rosenberg's Red "Owe" (Cadence, 2001) - very nice "classical free jazz" (temor-cornet-bass-drums quartet) record. Stylistically somewhat close to excellent Sven-Ake Johansson's "Six Little Pieces for Quintet" (hatOLOGY). Good heads, excellent solos (I understand that this was some sort of back-to-the-roots experiment for Rosenberg - he is more into somewhat more experimental stuff (that I haven't heard)). A pleasure to listen to. AMG review

Gary where did you source Willisau from, i'm having difficulty finding it at anything other than at stupid prices (£15plus) €18 (£12) from amazon.de (and less through market sellers): http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...5460409-9124811 I am sure you can find it cheaper in US on-line stroes...

John, Where did you pick this one up? The Music Resource can't get it anymore, Cadence's overseas shipping rate is a bit steep and I couldn't find it anywhere else. I either got it through Verge or Cadence. It was probably Verge, but I don't believe they have it in stock anymore. They don't Hans, try contacting Frode Gjerstad directly: fgjersta@online.no

... then you'll want this one: Michael Formanek's Am I Bothering You? Not quite as ecstatic as Was Da Ist, though a very fine solo bass outing. Formanek even comes up with some extended techniques that Kowald didn't (hard to do)! Thanks Late. This one is on THE LIST.
