Hey Gary, where did your post regarding Live at Nefertiti go? Did your wife make you delete it?

Friends, I just heard a solo saxophone CD which is probably just as good as Gebbia's Arcana Major... To be certain, I listened to it three times. It is really good. Ned Rothenberg "The Crux. Selected Solo Wind Works (1989-1992)" (Leo, 1993) To be obtained immidiately. AMG review Ned Rothenberg's website

Please give me the details for that one. Chuck, my mistake, the trio session I was referring to is Wilber Morris' "Collective Improvisation". Mid Wester Drifter is also a trio, but with bass and piano. I haven't listened to it for quite some time. As I remember, Tyler recites (well) his poems a bit, and plays alto mostly. I also remember it being very emotional - not on the sense of hysterical screaming or something like that, but in the sense of music directly conveying the emotions of the player. I will listen to it again and will report here. It's on Bleu Regard label

Much better. I consider this a triumph for Roscoe since I think the record they made with Charles Tyler is very sad for all involved. Roscoe is a stronger personality in playing situations than Charles was. Charles needed to be in complete control (or sympathy) to make the music work. Funny (rat?) enough, just a couple of days ago I listened to Charles Tyler's beautiful Midwestern Drifter CD (live trio set with Denis Charles and Wilber Morris).

Themusicresource often has good music that you would not find anywhere else. And often it does not. When it comes to free-avant-out-funnyrat stuff, form my 3-year experience with themusicresource.com, their availability database is 75% accurate. They are not very good in responding to e-mails, so I sugest you just go ahead and order.

Gokhan, I don't think Д.Д. would mind if you'd refer to him as "D.D." (Д.Д. is Cyrillic for D.D.) B) All these well-educated Dutchmen... Sure, D.D. is fine - and so is David.

You're absolutely right, Gokhan. Welcome to the board, by the way! Thank you. Hi all! Welcome gnhrtg! Nice handle - it will take me some time to memorize the letter sequence. As for Funny Rat album - all this out stuff sounds the same anyway - just plain noise. So it does not matter which one we discuss -it's all Funny Rat. As I mentioned, I am getting my copy as soon as we rich 1400 posts on this thread (mid- to late- may, I assume).
  10. Paul Smoker is a must.
  11. Don't bother, they suck. Clear words... thanks! What's the best way to get the Iron Man stuff? I have a Charly disc, as well as a WestWind, they do overlap a bit, but I think I got all - however, it would definitively be nice to have that music on one disc, decently remastered, complete discography, and some good liners... ubu This is Eric Dolphy, is afaik the latest incarnation of the Iron Man stuff (2003). It's a two-CD set on Varese Sarabande. The sound quality is decent. http://www.cdconnection.com/bin/nph-search...=googericdolphy

According to CDUniverse, there are a couple of CD releases from up-and-coming progressive jazz saxophonists available starting from tomorrow: Albert Ayler - Comple Live At Slug's: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz Eric Dolphy - Complete Memorial Album Sessions: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz Now I understand that Ayler's Slug stuff was released on ESP/Get Back some time ago - was that not complete? And what's the Memorial Album - is this the Five Spot stuff? Some more nice future relases, according to jazzmtazz: Dave Burrell's Full-Blown Trio - TBD (High Two Recording) June — with William Parker and Andrew Cyrille. Cyrille -yes! New solo Paul Bley seems to be already available: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz ! ...as well as Fracois Carrier quartet: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz I don't know who Carrier is, but the rythm session of Bley-Beacock-Lambert looks not bad at all.
  15. Charles Gayle and Sonny Simmons both were street musicians for some time.

Yesterday night was listening to some beautiful stuff - Dave Burrell with Tyrone Brown - "Recital" (CIMP, 2001). Joyful, lyrical, witty piano-bass duo. I never knew I would enjoy hearing "Struttin' with Some Barbeque" and "Caravan" this much, and "Giant Steps" is simply hilarious.

I've just ordered it from Jon. Will report here when my CD player's fixed - hopefully this year... He-he, that's what Soviet psycho-analysts called "involvement through imposed controversy". La Voyelle Liquide is a terrific disc. Strange... Actually, I ordered it a month ago but asked Jon to hold it for me - I "activated" the order before I posted here. What would those Soviet psycho-analysts have said about that, I wonder... Soviet psycho-analysts would have said that the fact that you activated your order immidiately after reading the post proves the theory of "involvement through imposed controversy". They would have also prescribed prophylactic electric shocks and extended community works on the fresh Siberian air, if you continue being bothered by too many questions.

Hans, in case you are contemplating buying Spirits, be warned: there is quitre a bit of singing on it. Listened to Simon Nabatov - Han Bennink duo Chat Room (Leo, 2003) - excellent stuff. I was surprised to hear how compatible with each other Nabarov and Bennink turned out to be. Nabatov is more percussive and somewhat more economical than elsewhere (he's quite a voluble player). And Bennink - every time I hear him (particularly when he iswell recorded, as here) - I can't help but smile - the man is full of suprises. Bravo! Some Han Bennink artwork:

Yes! This disc is fantastic! Drake and Rudolph go way back and are very sympathetic to each other's playing. I thought I read somewhere that this had gone oop? It HAS gone OOP, but a few copies are still available from Downtown Music Gallery; price: a whopping $20. I assume DMG is exaggerating a bit - this is a relatively recent relase (2000?) - I remember theeir long-OOP!!!!! impossible to find!!!!!!!!! last batch ever!!!!!!!!! miracously found in Brooklin basement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zappa CDs (that can be easily obtained through zappa.com). No mentioning about it gooing OOP in Meta site (updated several days ago) either.

CD Connection is cheaper and has more humaine shipping rates to Europe... New Sam Rivers release with Adam Rudolph (perc.) and Harris Eisenstadt (dr) on Rudolph's Meta records: http://www.metarecords.com/vista.html Could be nice. Talking about Meta Records, I assume everybody has Spirits (http://www.metarecords.com/spirits.html) - a great release of Mr. Pharoah Sanders (in absolutely top form!) with Adam Rudolph (perc) and Hamid Drake? Also, according to DMG there are two new Boxholder relases: 1. Sonny Simmons Cosmosomatics Trio (!) 2. Raphe Malik - Joe McPhee - Donald Robinson "Sympathy" Nice. As far as I understand, the guys at Indiejazz will soon stock the whole Boxholder catalog at $12 a piece, so this will be the best on-line source for Boxholder stuff (and there are some nice releases on it...).

John, let us know what you think of Vapirov. I find the stuff on this disc pretty uneven. But better tracks are astonishing, so I think it's worth it.
  24. I have Papirus Vol. 1 (Soul Note), and it's pretty weak, IMO: Oxley is strong, but Dixon mainly sticks to occasional low-frequency farting sounds - enetertaining, but only to an extent... But another nice trumpet-drums duo is Roy Brooks - Woody Shaw on Brooks' Duet in Detroit (Enja MW). Actually, I think there are a couple of trumpet-drums tracks on that disc. The rest of the duos are with Don Pullen, Randy Weston and Gerri Allen. Nice disc. And Daniel Carter plays a bit of fragile trumpet (or flügelhorn?) on his duo record with percussionist Frederico Ughi "Astonishment" (astonishment indeed) on 577 Records. I sonehow never cared for Boiwie/Wilson record, even though Bowie is one of my favorite trumpters. Also never heard the one with Bobo Shaw - need to look for this one.
