You never know. I've never heard Zorn's clarinet playing. Clarinet battle!!!!!

Looks totally insane. I will get it, of course. Nice to see that Atavistic is keeping reissueing archive FMP material - I've read somewhere that this is a subject of a court case between FMP and Atavistic (or whoever is in charge ofthe tapes) at the moment.

    Joachim Kühn

He-he, I remember seeing this. A "jazz Chopin" image. Pretty disguasting indeed. Overall, I am not a big fan of Kühn - talented musician (and monster chops), but tends to be too bombastic and, man, does he overplay... Never knew he plays alto - would be interesting to hear. His brother Rudoplh (?) plays straghtforward clarinet, and there is a nice disc (early-mid 90s, I think ) of his where he plays with different partners anbd there is one duo with Ornette, and it is excellent. Where the fuck is new Ornette's CD, btw?

I am not sure about essential, but I like Braxton in small setings (solo, duo, trio) and as much improvised as possible (since I don't think his compositns are always that interesting). Accordingly, I would reccommend: Duo (London) 1993 with Evan Parker in Leo (well, this one is essential, no doubt) 8 Duets (Hamburg) 1991 with Peter-Niklaus Wilson on Music & Arts 6 Duets 1982 with John Lindberg on Cecma Trio (London) 1993 with Evan Parker and Paul Rutherford on Leo (this one is also pretty essential) Milano 1979 Solo on Leo "Birth and Rebirth" with Max Roach on Black Saint "Silence/Time Zones" on Black Lion And many more of course. HatHut wil reissue another Braxton duo with Max Roach later this year.

ubu, solo Cecil is my favorite Cecil, so yes, of course I highly recommend these CDs. Indent is beautiful, but I am not sure it is that easy to find (it's on Freedom). If you don't find it, I'll CD-R it for you... one day. Air Above Mountains (on Enja MW) is available for EUR 10 from amazon.de: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...3523564-6837667 How is East-Berlin?

It is somewhat more melodic than other CT solo recordings, but is quite represenatitive nonetheless . Meaning, get other solo Cecil stuff ("Indent", "Air Above Mountains", "Silent Tongues", etc.)!

You're not allowed to dispose of any disk without first having listened to it three times. Seriously, I'd do as John suggests and put it aside for a future sale -- AFTER you've listened to it two more times. Agree with John and Tony, - listen to it several times. I wasn't impressed on first listen, was intrigued on second and awed on third.

I agree on melford/Bennink disc - excellent work (and I also was lessthan excitied about it in the beginnig, but it has grown on me). I've recently made an attempt to buy Funny Rat from Erstwhile, but they sent me some other CD instead (solo Shoji Hano, actually - haven't listened to it yet). I understand and accept the subtle sub-message: getting Funny Rat is not as easy as it might seam... I'll be persistant - I will try again. Let's see what I will recieve this time.

Tony, I appreciate your bold linguistic innovations and I am flattered for having had a chance to inpsire you, but what about Gebbia's "H Portraits"? I assume you are the only person on this thread (on this board??????) in possession of this CD, and that you haven't shared your thoughts on it with us (and all board waiting in unticipation!) is at least irresponsible.

If you haven't done so already you should pick up Johnny's Corner Song, which has been OOP for a while but is now available again through Gerry directly. Same lineup as Devil's Paradise with Robin Eubanks in place of Ray Anderson. Very much in the same vein and an excellent album. I would say Johnny's Corner Song is better than Devil's Paradise - more varied in mood and slightlz more experimental. Both are solid, if not outstanding works.

Nice. I'll be picking this one up.

I e-mailed Eremite and asked them whether they are planning to release anything any time soon (since it's been a year since last batch, and one of the OOP Eremite CDs was reissued on Atavistic, Ii thought the label is folding or something). Here is what I received back: ...two volumes of sunny murray recordings, mixed ensembles with mateen, oluyemi thomas, john blum, w. parker, dave burrell, others. brotzmann/bennink duo on 'bro' new bro/drake/parker trio reissues of a number of unusual recordings...... Now how about that? Hope Brötzmann/Bennink duo (unpresedental thing, correct?)is released on CD, not LP...

I assume this one whould have enough solo space for Wierbos: It's a solo trombone record on DATA.

Hmm, I didn't like this one too much. I like Dickey, and the bassist is good, but I have a problem with Rob Brown (not only here, but basically nearly everywhere I've heard him). Technically he is very strong, but stylistically... I feel he is comfortably stuck somewhere between 60's McLean and Dolphy, and this is not what I am interested in hearing from a modern musician... I will listen to it again. Actually, I remember there was one disc with Rob Brown that I liked - and it also features Dickey (on AUM): -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Supersilent, I've been meaning to check since you and ubu brought them up way back when - at the inception of Funny Rat. I'll check them out. And Jagga as well.

Me too. CRIPES UBU! Get with the program, would you! B) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks Hans for the information on the Brotz Hat release. ubu, you'd better standardize on 40 posts per page... don't test the limits of our tolerance -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anybody here heard Andre Jaume's "Peace / Pace / Paix" (CELP)? It's a trio with Jaume on ts and bcl, Charlie on Haden and Olivier Clerc on drums. Beautiful melancholic stuff. Jaume has a pretty unique sound (very soft) and melodic concept (...flexible - really free, meaning not particularly "out", but liberated - a bit like Lee Konitz, with endless melodies created out of nowhere). Haden plays beautifully and Clerc provides understated clever drumming (a lot of brushes). Interesting selection of compositions: a couple of Ornette's (in general, the whole disc has a bit of Ornettish feel, but more relaxed and melancholic, as I mentioned), four by Haden, two by Django Reinhart and one each by Buddy Collett and Jaume himself. Highly recommended. I got my copy from themusicresource. So should you.

Barre Phillips is not too bad a bassist either . Guy and Phillips have a duo record, don't they? - Anybody knows it by chance?
  22. Д.Д.

    Funny Rat

That's my problem with Mahall - excellent musician, but too much Dolphy...

Good news - Schiano is a wonderful musician (ubu, you can hear him on the Italian Instabile Festival double CD)! And bravo to Atavistic for digginig up this really obscure stuff.
  24. It was released on CD on Leo Records, but it's long OOP. As far as I know, there are no plans to reissue it. It is actually not that good, and if you want to hear the same compositions perfomed better, get Ed Balckwell's What It Is? and What It Be Like? on Enja.
