Just received a press reslease from Leo. Three new rleases: 1. Carlo Actis Dato duo with bassist Baldo Martinez. 2. Roman Lopez trio with Joelle Leander and Sophia Domancich. 3. Tri O & Sainkho. This one I am most excioted about. Sainkho is a stunning new music vocalist, and Tri O is an outatanding Russian trio of Letov-Parfenov-Alexandrov (saxophones - trumpet - bassoon, respectively). And a reissue of Sainkho's "Letters" (an excellent disc) which has been unavialable for some time.

Earlier Vandermark thread As for me, I am mostly indifferent to Vandermark, but some releases I found to be very exciting, like AALY with Vandermark: "I Thought I Was Screaming" (Crazy Wisdom), which has some very impressive Vndermark's compositions.

Jazkamer (or Jazzkammer, I've seen it spelled both ways) is a duo from Norway (John Hegre and Lasse Marhaug) whose work I would characterize as "noise." Marhaug is fantastic, but most definitely not for all tastes. ← Tony, there is an MP3 of Jazzkammer at Lasse Marhaug website. I like it.

I'm not much on that first one, but the second grabs me. (just making sure I get my five posts in for the next 5000....) ← Got both CDs and listened to them. Both are good, but the second one, Electro-Magnetic Trans-Personal Orchestra is indeed a more interesting one. Very original music - highly recommended. It's a part of $5 sale ($ 5 !!!!)

Tony, Potlatch music causes insomnia?

From Utech: My summer release schedule is really shaping up and I have two exceptional titles to offer for the second half of June. These two artists raise the bar in their respective fields and I'm happy to be associated. As always, the discs are available on the website www.utechrecords.com Thank you. Leslie Keffer "Represents" [012] Analog electronics from Ohio. Lotte Anker "Six Row Barley" [013] Electro/Acoustic improv from Denmark. Still in the works for July/August: Henrik Rylander "Possible Risk for Pulpal Reactions" [014] Sepia Trio "Cleft" [015] Audiotrope "Feedback for the Nation" [016] Jazkamer "Ninguna Diversion" [017]

Sound samples sound interesting: Floros Floridis. Definitely will check out this trio disc with Kowald and Sommer.

Hmm, didn't hear any Bley there. Bley has a talent for melody and for "developing" a piece in a fascinating way - I didn't hear any of that here. On the contrary, there was very little development (IMO) - just a set of quite disjointed exercises...

Following the Italian theme reignited by John's BFT, here are a couple of recent Italian listens - both didn't impress me too much. Giorgio Pacorig - "My Mind is On the Table" (Splasc(H), 2003). Post-bop piano trio. All seems quite forced to me and lacking in pesonality. "Free" pieces are not free enough, more structured pieces lacks any memorable melodies. There are a couple of Ornette pieces, and seems like Pacorig is not too sure what to do with them. Reminds me of Hancock quite a bit - and equally unconcincing when he tries to play "free". Daniele Cavallanti - "Holystone" (Splasc(H), 2002) That's early-Ornette quartet type of stuff. Cavallanti is firmly somewhere in the Coltrane - Joe Henderson - Dewey Redman zone. Calabrese does some impressive trumpet pyrotechnics. Really well-played, but nothing earth-shattering. I was hoping for something more original.

7/4, you are a saint, obviously. Are there any Braxton's releases you actually do not like?

Just when I was about to order Nisslen-Love/Marhaug CD, I see it's already sold out. Hopefully the second edition is comind - looks like Utech is not interested in creating instant rarities and does additional pressings when sold out. I am ordreing the other Nilssen-Love, Rempis and Hubak. For the rest, I am not too convined by the sound samples.

Hmm, John, I think you shouldn't expect too much of a revelation here. "Electric Dream" is so-so - dated advanced post-bop. Furio Romano is in the "advanced 60s Blue Note" vein. Well played, but not too original either. I don't know this Ceriano, but I have his other one dedicated to Kirk's music, and I though it was quite unspectacular as well (very polished large band stuff). Mezzapelle I don't know. ---------------- On edit. Listening to Apuzzo's "Electric Dreams" now... It's not too bad, actually. Sure, there are fusionish synth guitars, electric bass and drums (and saxophone sound has nice smooth jazz reverb to it) - but at the same time, it is all cleverly done, Apuzzo is strong (if not too orgiginal) post-Coltrane saxophonits, and hearing a fusion-type arrangement of Ayler's "Ghosts" is moderately entertaining.

Received the FMR order (took 2 days to arrive ). Indeed, these are some of the ugliest and sloppiest digipaks I've ever seen! Will be doing a lot of FMR listening this week.

I wonder which instrument it is that I mistook for a violin .... Is it really "trumpet marin" on the liner? ← I also thought it was viola. Quite amazing indeed. Ordered two Garcia-Fons CDs.

From Pi Recordings newsletter: (...) we are very excited to announce the release of Fieldwork's new CD, Pi16 - Simulated Progress. Recorded in September of 2004 by Scotty Hard, Simulated Progress marks the return to the studio of one of modern music's most innovative working bands; it also introduces new member, Steve Lehman (alto & soprano). The collaborative trio, the CD features compositions by all members, works with each other's music towards creating a language solely their own and entirely different from other current trios, but entirely keeping with the history of revolutionary collaborative bands, Air, Art Ensemble of Chicago and the Revolutionary Ensemble. The street date for the CD is July 17th, but it is available for sale on our web site now. Fieldwork: Vijay Iyer - p Steve Lehman - as, ss Elliot Humberto Kavee - dr

The latest issue of the Italian Jazzit magazine has a bonus CD of Martial Solal called Bluesine. Anybody knows what is on it?

again for the BFT. A couple of comments. John, I would argue this is rather a factor of your limited exposure to Italian jazz (yet). Italian jazz/improv scene is very rich and diverse and is quite well documented (Splasc(H) label alone has 400 releases or so, and there are dozens more labels recording Italian musicians). And Italy is a rather large country (60mln population). I would encourage those who liked this track to check out Italian Instabile Festival (Leo Records, 2CD). This dis features IIO musicians in various settings - from solos to trios, quartets to the full band. such a program allows musicinas to display their (formidable) solo abilities and concepts better than within IIO structure. Then foillow the discographies of the individual artists. As mentioned, this track might leave an impression of a mindless virtuoso type of muscian, but the whole disc is much more diverse than this with a lot of great ideas, melody and unmatched skill. I listened to this one again (first time in 2.5 years), and still cannot warm to it - the musicians are outstanding, and there are some excellent moments here, but there is just too much of... everything. The whole disc is a constant hyperbola, IMO, and I tend to get tired of it very quickly. It is important to note that this track is very uncharacteristic of the whole disc, which is, believe it or not is some mean FUNK. With clarinet as the solo instrument. Very enjoyable, clever and original music. Second clarinet is featured only on one track. Again, this track is uncharacteristic of the bulk of the content of this set. But then no one track would - there is a lot (too much, I'd say) of extremely diverse stuff here. I think this is the only trakc with prepared piano (which confused me a bit ). Battaglia has a huge discography (although he is still a young guy, not even 40, I guess), and is a truly unique voice on piano, who can (and does) play everything from bebop to Bill Evans tributes to some fairly wild stuff - all in his own original style. A good place to buy Italian CDs is Jazzos.com.

GREAT opportunitiy to listen to Morton Feldman's String Quartet (II). 4.5 hours You can even listen to it twice - and still have some time for an in-flight movie.

2001 also has a few Enja and Winter & Winter releases for EUR 7.

this one has really grown on me and is perhaps the one I'd most likely to check out in full.. thanks ← You should do so! It's a beautiful one! ← This is the one I assumed it was from: I guess I will order both.

Thanks for recommendations, gentlemen.

Of those, I have only Freedom In the City 2001/02 sets that I still havene't gone through. Will do some semi-random selection by the end of the summer. Thanks for compiling a list, Tony.
