LF: Dan Plonsey: Understanding Human Behavior
Д.Д. replied to Jazzmoose's topic in Offering and Looking For...
So did you listen to it? -
This is a great Gräwe, IMO! My favorite of his (out of 5-6 I have). -------------------- Ubu, this Lowe looks not too bad at all. Get it and tell us about it.
-
Looks very interesting. Hope this band gets recorded.

All this Funny Rat reading was not lost on you, Mark. Try contacting Dan Plonsey directly: http://www.plonsey.com/. -
I am still a bit perplexed by this disc. I mean, it's a good - very good, but something prevents me from calling it a great one (DA SHIT, using technical terminology). Probably it is that both Gebbia and Goodheart display their talents much more eloquently on their solo discs (Arcana Major and Songs from the Time of Great Questioning, respectively).

OOP Hat Art and many other discs on eBay
Д.Д. replied to jon abbey's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'm taking your advice, Chaney. If anyone outbids me I will be pissed. -
from between (SOSeditions) by Michel Doneda / Jack Wright / Tatsuya Nakatani turned out to be one of the best discs I've heard in the recent time. Available from the lable directly, or from Erstwhile.

Tony, in case you are missing some the mid-priced hatOLOGY or hat[NOW]art titles, check out Jazzloft - $10 per CD.
-
A little bit of playing with HatHut website yields these ones as likely pending releases: Both look interesting.

Flurin, I have heard no Arista Braxton, but from what I understand "Basel" and "Dortmund" on hatOLOGY and "News from the 70s" (on Newtone, a Felmay subsidiary) should be a good approximation of what it is like. If you want my opinion - I am not too interested (except for solo/duo projects, probably). Talking about Braxton, anybody managed to go through all 4 CDs of the Ghost Transe Music 2001 set on Rastascan/Barely Auditable. I failed miserably.

Marion Brown is the man! Check out his duos with Mal Waldron on Freelance (Songs of Love and Regret, second one I forgot what it is called) - here is Brown (and Wladrin) palying (with) tunes. ALl played very slow, in a mood is of reckless depression. Also, Brown's duo with GUnter Hampel - Reeds and Vibes (on Paul Bley's IAI) - this is more "free-jazz"-leaning music, but also really lyrical. Haven't heard his ESPs yet, and Three for Shepp (Impulse!) is actually the only Marion Brown I've heard I didn't like. Hope the man will go back to recording.

Cool sale. This Soviet Avantgarde piano is excellent (not very avantgarde, though).
-
Hey Tony! Have you listened to the Leandre / Naseef duo on 482 Music? I listend to it yesterday for the first time, and it seemd like a very boring affair to me. Surprisingly weak for Leandre, I thouhgt. Will check it again one of these days.

OK, the Chadbourne/Lovens disc I like is called Patrizio (Victo). Haven't had a chance to listen to it today, but form what I rememeber it is freely improvised mostly quiet but busy music, with a lot of intricate interpaly and some creative sound exploration by Chadbourne (on acoustic instruments). Rather careless, but interesting. No vocals. Will give it a listen this week. AMG review

Harvard's WHRB is starting their Spring orgies again, and one of them will be on Giacinto Scelsi. Schedule here and webcast link here. Also of interest are the Abdullah Ibrahim, Joe Lovano, five Russian composers (Mily Balakirev, Alexander Borodin, César Cui, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Modest Mussorgsky) Charlie Parker and Tokyo jazz. Out of Russians, I'd highly recommend Mussorgsky, partiucualrly "Pictures at the Exhibition" (and this is a great performance they chose to feature).

I have a few (5-6) Chadbourne's CDs, and I remeber that I liked at least a couple (one duo with Paul Lovens in particular). Surely enough, I don't rememebr the titles. I'll get home, will go through them and will post here.

It's in my incoming indiejazz order (together with the Scott Rosenberg 482 release). Also nt a big fan of Chadbourne in general, but the man can play and when he is focused he can be really brillaint. ------------------ Regarding the CD you review at Bagatellen - I have it (and I also was somewhat bemused by the packaging - talk about pretentious), but haven't listened to it yet. I gave very high expectations (becoming an ardent Jack Wright fan), so I need to allocate a quality listening time to that one, as it deserves.

WOW! Never saw that site before. Looks VERY interesting. Anyone (David?) have any experience with this material? Not yet, just stumbled upon the site today. Really interested in Bailey/Bennink disc and in Riley discs (will get a couple of them randomly - Riley with Chet Baker?!?!). Somebody proclaimed himself to be a insatiable West Coast music explorer. Will the 10-CD Los Angeles Free Music Society set suffice for a starter?

HEINER STADLER'S JAZZ ALCHEMY. A pioneering album of merging jazz and contemporary composition.. Could be interesting.
-
Friends, surely this is not a revelation for you, but I still have to say it. This: is a stunning album. If anybody (John B?) for whatever reason does not have it, he should remedy it immidiately (as the CD is long OOP).

Gonna do some listening this weekend. Have you listened to any of those? A couple of the shorter pieces. Nothing really jumped out at me screaming HOLY CRAP! LISTEN TO THIS! but I'll have a better listen this weekend. Actually, as they can be downloaded, I may download the bunch, burn 'em to cheap CDs and listen on my stereo, rather than sitting in front of my computer doing the streaming audio thing. ON THE EDIT: Later that night... klaus filip / taku unami: at dornerplatz 0:14:05 I'm listening to some of the other pieces and I like what I'm hearing. AND ON THE FOLLOWING DAY... boris hauf (sax), lukas knoefler (drums), achim tang (bass): slow ball 0:06:14 ruth weiss(voice), boris hauf(sax), lulkas knoefler(drums), achim tang(bass): white is all colours 0:12:06 ruth weiss(voice),boris hauf(sax), lukas knoefler(drums),achim tang(drums): light works 0:20:20 Finally gave a listen to these ones. FIlip / Unami I found quite boring, but Boris Hauf I like a lot. Did a search and found his website and mosz records.

Did a search on Matt Bauder, and here is what I found: Locust Music. Any recommendations?
-
... which, as far as I remember sucks big deal. Gotta check it out again. Since we are at it, here is another one that sucks (IMO): Brett Larner / Toshimaru Nakamura - "after school activity" (impermanent recordings). Same note (might be a chord, not sure now - no way I will check it again in the near future) plucked on koto at constant interval with extremely monotonous colorless humm at the background for 20 minutes. Give me a break. At the same time, I remember enjoying Brett Larner's duo with Anthony Braxton (on Leo) quite a bit.

Matt Bauder's Weary Already on the Way (482 Music, 2003) is truly fascinating. Very original composer. I am only halfway through it, and it's the first listen, so this is as much as I can say at the moment. 482 Music website has plenty of reviews. ANd yeah, some sound samples at CDBaby. Not sure I am that much interested in hearing more recent Braxton, though.
