The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!
Д.Д. replied to Parkertown's topic in Offering and Looking For...
i would opt for one thread listing the offers only with one post per member and another like this here with give and take as it else gets unhandy with all the good stuff maybe forgotten. Cheers, Tjobbe Well, once "transaction" has taken place, there is no need to keep the information regarding it on the board anymore. This could be a very lean thread, then. -
The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!

Shall we delete the post with offers which are already taken? - so that the thread is not clogged and it is easy to search for still valid offers. -
Sure. Through this strong record: Biggi Vinkeloe (as, fl) / Barre Phillips (bass) / Peeter Uuskyla (dr) - "One Way Out" (Slask, 1998) I cannot say I enjoy Ms. Vinkeloe's playing that much (the alto sound is too dry for my taste - reminds me of Lee Konitz quite a bit, and the ideas are not particularly original; her flute playing is more interesting, but she does not play it that much here, unfortunately), but it is always a pleasure to hear Barre Phillips (who is in a very inspired and often quite manic mood here), and Peter Uuksyla (of Brötzmann's "Nefertiti" trio fame) complements Phillips phenomenally well (I like his playing here more than in Brötzmann's trio - more thoughtful and diverse). My favorite track is an insane 2-minute Phillips/Uuskyla duo. Looks like Ms. Vinkeloe likes the trio format - she has another trio CD on LJ Records, again with Uuskyla and some Peter Kowald. And yeah, looks like Slask records is in a sort of a limbo - the website hasn't been updated since 2000. Thus I would highly recommend getting your hands on at least one of their releases:

Eskelin sounds like Liebman? Is he into that Coltrane thing too? Maybe I should check him out... It would be a real shame is Eskelin started sounding like Liebman. This might be one of the few Eskelin discs that I won't even consider buying - due to Liebman's presense (who is a very derivative player, IMO).
-
I have it, but still haven't listned to it. Looking forward.

Out of this, I would highly recommend Duval/Whitecage duo "Rules of Engagement, Vol. I" and, of course, "Southern Extreme" by Futterman/Jordan/Feilder.
-
Will get this Chicago Underground disc.

Lots of interesting concerts at the Banlieues Bleues 2005 festival. Current program: http://www.banlieuesbleues.org/english/english.htm Not sure I'll be able to make it to Paris, but a good thing that many of these musicians will make it over here to Switzerland right before or after the Paris dates.

Shostakovich: Complete String Quartets Performed by the Shostakovich Quartet (Regis) Available at BROINC for $20 (this is a 5-CD set!). I would encourage everybody here to get this set asap - this is some of the most powerful and moving music ever written, and peformances are outstanding. Sound quality, while occasionally not perfect, is more than adequate.

Is the Flying Dutchman catalog destined to rot?
Д.Д. replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in Re-issues
All Gato Barbieri Flying Dutchman discs were reissued a couple of years ago by BMG France (with excellent sound). Still available at budget prices in Europe. -
No shit!- and still 2.5 days to go! This set shouldn't be that hard to locate, I assume.

Sounds interesting! Gotta start catching up with SteepleChase catalog.

Great to see the development of the thread. I would suggest that posters who don't receive any requests for the CDs they offer for some time (a week, shall we say it?) offers something elese instead. After all, if you received a CD from somebody, you gotta send a CD to somebody as well. A good karma preservation principle. -

Interesting you don't mention postage to North America from overseas. If you think about it, you'll discover that non-US posters are more likely to pay higher shipping fees as (with this board membership being predominantly Amrican) they are more likely to ship to the US, than US posters to overseas. Or you assume that nobody in the US might be possibly interested in what international posters have to offer ? -

Great idea. I also think it would be better to do away with PMs and award the CD to the first poster in the thread. -
I think he tattooed his drums only. Both releases look very tasty. I think DMG is selling Unorthodox releases.

How IS that album? I've seen it in the stores. Pretty good. Covers, but very well done. John French sings an excelent Beef. Makes me forget it's not Don. I heard some broadcast, and was really disappointed. Well played, but Ihated the Beefheartian vocals - what's the point of trying to sing exactly (and this seemed to be the intentiona - with all Beefheart licks and mannerisms) like Don - it's impossible to do it. This is such an opriginal music, and as soon as you introduce an element of imitation (however well-intended) into it, it is downgraded to a second-tier copy. Why not have a trumpet play the vocal parts for example, and make it a bit more creative (like what Phillip Johnston's Fast 'N' Bulbous are doing, for example).

Tony, I don't have it, but's its on THE LIST. Love Masaoka! -I mean not in the ubu-Ibarra type of way, but love her playing! ------------------ As for Sperry, I plan to get at least on of his solo records on Limited Sedition.

Looking at the cover, some of the less open-minded of you might gently enquire - what the fuck is that? is this some more of heavy metal "music" that John B and Д.Д. are pathologically partial to? Well, it might be nearly as good as that. Personnel: Billy Bang - violin Charles Gayle - alto & tenor saxophones Sirone - bass Tyshawn Sorey - drums A new release on Silkheart records.

Upcoming Rastascan release: WOLFGANG FUCHS with Tom Djll, Tim Perkis, Gino Robair, John Shiurba, and Matthew Sperry SIX FUCHS: http://www.rastascan.com/catalog/brd052.html Looks interesting.

Great idea. I'd say 96 kbit/sec should be adequate. Thanks!

Friends, I would like to recommend highly the follwoing record: Gray Ghost - "How to Create Words" (482 Music, 2003) Hard-to-describe music. A lot of things are mixed together - some John Butcher, some Evan Parker, some E IA (I think), some fairly traditional "free jazz"... All sounds very creative, enjoyable and relevant. Sound samples at CD Baby. Available at indiejazz, CD Baby or directly at 482 Music. -------------------------------- Also, have been listening to some Erstwhile treasures that landed at my door. Keith Rowe/Günter Müller/Taku Sugimoto - "The World Turned Upside Down" Pure gentle beauty. Fairly quiet, but with its own logics, developmentand a lot of clever interaction. The best one of 4 records with Keith Rowe I have so far ("Weather Sky" and "Live at Lu" - both on Erstwhile, I found extremely boring, and "Grain" on Zarek is very good, but probably sllightly less interesting than "The World...") Thomas Lehn / Marcus Schmickler - "Bart" This one is a much more rambunctious affair, and I like it even more. The sounds that Messrs. Lehn and Schmickler emit are very pleasing to my ear (a lot of low-to-mid register, shall I say "farting" sounds - no sine waves), all quitre energetic (but not violent or noisy) with a lot of dynamic variation, exciting interplay and constant surprises. Interaction between musicians is truly fascinating - gentlemen obviously had fun playing with each other. Was going out tonigh, and just couldn't leave until the record was over - was really mesmerized by what I was hearing. More Erstwhile stuff to explore in the next days.

Time to become a vocal one, then!
