    LP to CD

Before I had my mp3 player I recorded my LPs to .Wav using "Audacity". Audacity is an open-source audio editor and recorder, so it's a free alternative to using professional software that often cost a great deal of money. Link to Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I use my "iRiver" mp3 player in conjunction with the "rec out" of my amplifier. The "iRiver" directly encodes to mp3 at up to 320kbs, so while there is some quality loss, it's save the bother of converting your audio to mp3 (if you want to listen to your LPs on your mp3 player). Also some sound cards on computer drives (especially cheap integrated ones) are prone to background computer noises. The "iRiver" moves all background noise to produce a very clear sound. The only disadvantage is that you can't record to .wav, so if you are an audiophile and can't stand the sound of even high bit-rate mp3s it may not be the best option for you. It works well for me at least! One of the many reasons why I prefer iRivers over iPods.

wow this thread is still going. I remember it when it was only a few pages long. For some reason or other I havn't visited this forum for almost half a year, but now that I remember in exists again, I might start posting more often .
  9. King Ubu, do you have any idea where I can find these "free" CDRs? ← go here. There are two live shows available. One is 3 discs, one is 2. Both feature ROVA, among the many musicians. ← wow thanks John B, I see the Funny Rat thread is still alive! I've now graduated and have a full time job. So there isn't as much time to post of forum now. But at least I have a lot more money to buy records with
  10. King Ubu, do you have any idea where I can find these "free" CDRs? I really like what I've heard from Wasada Leo Smith. Unfortunately I havn't heard too much (only his stuff on Tzadik), I havn't even heard his miles tributes yet.
  11. I prefer Conversations, but both are excellent and even essential.

On friday I played a live performance of my improvisation for the first time. I would like to hear your opinion on my piece. You can listen to it here: http://members.ii.net/~bala3/pianoimprov3sep2004.mp3 The piece is an example of my total free improvisation. I have never been trained as a pianist, nor have I ever self-taught myself to play the piano in the 'proper way'. The piece represents a naive approach to improvisation. Personally I think everyone can improvise like I do, it just takes a little bit of physical effort. The response in the concert was quite good, although one of the composers came up to me after the concert and said "I hated your piece. I have no respect for you at all". In a way I was quite glad that it had such an intense impact on him, I had originally intended the piece to be anti-music, much in the same way as the Italian Futurists. So take a listen, and give me your honest opinion. Thanks, Geoff.

My stereo system died yesterday On the bright side, I bought The Golden Years Of Soviet New Jazz Vol.I 4 CD box set. And I only paid $25 AUS (Conversion approx $17.50 US, 8 Pounds, 12 Euros) for it new! Wow The bad news, is that as soon as I walked out of the shop, I dropped the bag it was in, and broke the jewel case, and it is one of those double/(double sided 4 CD carrying) cd case, which is hard to replace. Bah, just my luck.

I believe I got the Unwound Box Set for $10 (AUS, so that is like 5 Euros/3 Pounds/$4 US). I found it in a discount bin. It is alright, it isn't bad but it isn't something I listen to that frequently.

I love Henry Grimes' The Call. I don't find it boring at all! Of course music is a subjective matter. I beg you to give it another try though

Brooks' "Free Slave" is essential. Joyful and funky masterpiece. You can just see the musicians smiling, and on the last track there is at the moment when Woody Shaw eneters (after Coleman's solo) - and I imagine him jumping on stage in impatience: "Now I am gonna show you something!". When I was studying I used to put this one on while getting ready to go out in night (because it has THE GROOVE) - and I would invariably be 30 minutes late, because I just HAD to finish listening the disc till the end. I also used to do my ritual morning dance to the last track, but I'll spare you of details. Play your thing, Roy! I found the original LP of this album in Mint condition! Lovely Album. I also have the 32 Jazz CD version of it too. I'm pretty sure the original mint condition LP must be worth something.

Hi John. I recieved the Jack Rose CD today. Thanks a whole lot. I actually havn't sent the Sergey Kuryokhin just yet. First my computer died on me, second I've had a few essays due at university, thirdly I've been out of cash too! But I do promise to send you it, I have the CD purchased, so I apologise for being a bit late. I'll hopefully post it very soon.

Geoff, do you have foreign improv musicians coming often to Australia? I remember you posted your pictures of Parker, Dunmall and Kenny Wheeler, so looks somebody does manage to come - but how often it happens? And how rich is your local imporv scene? ha! I had to go to England to see Evan Parker/Paul Dunmall/Kenny Wheller! Australia gets nothing. The free jazz improv seen is pretty weak here in Sydney. I want to go overseas.

Sirone is getting back together with Leroy Jenkins for the Revolutionary Ensemble Reunion at the Vision(s)(?) Music Festival! Should be excellent, shame I'm in Australia since I would like to go to it.
  24. it says George Lewis on the EMI Missing Royalties website. Is that the Trombone player George Lewis? If so, it would be pretty easy to contact him.
