I bought these cds today. What do you guys think of some of these albums?

It doesn't help, Geoff; after a page or two of sales the darned thing is full and you just have to get another one... ← Currently I'm saving up money for a "round" the world trip. I havn't been to the United States since I was 6, so I'm excited about the opportunity to go record shopping there. I'm sure the jazz selection is better than it is here in Sydney, Australia. I also plan to stop off in Japan, so I can get some out of print blue note jazz albums

    Paul Williamson

I recently saw the Paul Williamson/Jamie Oehlers Quintet play at the Sound Lounge in Sydney. I thought it was a pretty good concert, and I took some photos to share with the board. I've got a couple of Paul's albums, and I think they are pretty solid. I remember Kenny Weir (sp?) being a fan, I wonder if he is still around on this forum. Is anyone here a member of SIMA? I joined the Association at the concert.
  4. I prefer 20th Century Classical Music over more traditional forms. My favourite composers are Gyorgy Ligeti, Morton Feldman and John Cage. Here are some modern classical albums I recommend

I really need to get a credit card. All these good sales and I can't buy anything from them. It's enough to drive me crazy

    Martial Solal

has anyone come across one of Solal's early albums called "Meet Martial Solal". It's of the highest artistic quality.
  7. I'm guessing the "theme" is "Italian Jazz", so I've pretty much assumed every track is somehow related to Italy. 1. I thought this one was a little too "tight" for my liking. The drumming wasn't very inventive and the solos weren't anything special. I also thought it was a bit disjointed as a composition. The change of the "tone" of the piece after the piano solo was rather offputing and a little cheesy for me. Not something I'd listen to normally. 2. I enjoyed this track more than the first. It was a slow burner with some nice trumpet playing. It sounded like a pretty recent recording so I'd probably guess that it was an italian trumpeter playing on the record, perhaps Paolo Fresu. Fresu has that kind of mellow tone that is in display on this track. The piano didn't do much for me, and the bass playing was boring/uninventive. The brushes by the drummer suited the piece but it just seemed a little lazy to me. 3. This one was a lot more interesting. Technique used reminds me of Evan Parker, although I am absoutely sure that it is not Evan himself. It is most likely to be some other European Saxophonist, most probably from Italy (following the trend). I wouldn't have clue who it actually is though. 4. Drumming kind of reminded me of Hamid Drake. The saxophonist sounds influenced by Eric Dolphy. So I thought it may have been Ehrlich or Sclavis but neither are really Italian. 5. Some nice if not a little bumptious trumpeting. Some reasonably nice saxophone solos but I don't really think the piece holds itself together too much, and it's a little too long. Wouldn't say it was my favourite so far. I'm guessing it is Italian again. 6. More Italian Music? How could this be. I'm pretty sure she is singing in Italian. It's a very nice track, I like the accordion. I don't have any clue who it is though. 7. This was great, an impressive track. Although I do think it weakens at the end, when it just comes too melodic blah! It has to be Italian, or this song isn't from the BFT #26. 8. This is one of my favourite tracks so far. Soft and serene. I still don't have any clues who it is. 9. Embaressing vocals at the start and it is in English. Oh well there goes my "everything is italian" presumption. Unless of course they are Italians trying to sound English. It's a little "cheesy" for my tastes. 10. Some strong Dixieland influences on this one, especially at the beginning of the track. I don't really think their attempt to sound dixie is too successful. I wasn't really impressed with this track at all. 11. Now this is more like it. The best track on the whole mix by a great deal. At first I thought the pianist was Keith Tippett (ala the "prepared" piano), however he isn't Italian so I'm a little clueless to who this could be. Nevertheless it's a beautiful piece, utterly flawless.
  8. I've never bought a CD/LP online in my life. Mostly because I don't have a credit card yet
  9. I'd love to hear an album of Morton Feldman influenced Jazz Standards.

I foresee Jazzmoose overtaking you (Mr. Lazybones ) any day now. Only two days into 5kx2 and he's already contributed two posts. Peter is also coming on strong. ← I wish I could contribute more to this thread. However I don't tend to keep too up to date with current trends in experimental jazz music. I'm normally a few years behind, since I mostly buy whatever is heavily discounted

That's a bit of a shame, hopefully Rune Grammofon will be able to reach out as far int the future. I've always considered their releases to be more interesting than stuff put out by ECM as of late.
  12. Sonny Red - Sonny Red (Mainstream Records) This is a pretty great record from the one time Blue Note saxophonist Sonny Red.

I guess you guys aren't on soulseek? It has a chatroom (where many of the patrons of ihatemusic reside), so it can be used for legitmate reasons (ahem)

I own this one, and it is good. I haven't listened to it in quite a while, so I'm not sure exactly how good I would say it is. I thought I bought a copy through Squidco, but they don't seem to have it now. It is also available directly from the band for AU$27.28 plus shipping. ← Yes, the Photosynthetic set is great. By the way I got my copy of Athenaeum, Homebush, Quay & Raa signed by the entire band. Oh, I also have a personal recording of a concert of theirs I went to. (perhaps you'd like a copy (hush hush)).

John, are these two albums still the ones you would recommend to start exploring The Necks with? ← I'd have to go with completely different albums. The double CD "Silent Night", the more recent "Drive By" and for something a little more upbeat and reminisent of Miles Davis' In A Silent Way "Hanging Gardens".

Don't know Australian Free Jazz at all . ← It's pretty impressive. It has never been released on CD, so it's rather obscure. I was lucky enough to find an original LP, it's one of my most cherished records. ← Sounds interesting. How would you describe them? Are there any more well known groups you would compare them to? ← It's rather difficult to compare them to any particular band. Cecil Taylor meets Peter Brotzmann meets Andrew Cyrille

Don't know Australian Free Jazz at all . ← Same here... even without "Free" in there... The Necks, are they Australian? What about Mike Nock? From NZ? No one else comes to mind... ← The Necks are one of my favourite Australian free jazz bands. They are an excellent band to see live, every performance is unique. Mike Nock is now considered an Australian, even though he grew up in New Zealand. I've seen him live too, but wasn't so impressed with his performance (he was forced to use an electric piano so I can't blame him). He has however played on a number of good albums, in particular he can be heard in form on Yusef Lateef's Live at Pep's recordings from the mid 60s.
  18. I promise to post in it, when I receive the test in the mail!

hey have you guys heard of the Australian Free Jazz band Free Katta?
  21. I've bought a couple of these. Lee Morgan's The Cooker is great.

There is a solo piano album with that name, and it's amazing! One of my all time favourite solo piano discs even. (and yes it was also released on HatArt)
