I now have the single 45rpm of "The Jazz Stars", albeit in a bit of a state but it has yielded the info I wanted. No cover so once again a picture of the discs will have to suffice.

A correction to my list of album cover pictures still missing. The George Melly one is, I've discovered, called "Melly Sings Hoagy". I found a partial picture on eBay but no luck trying to locate a complete cover. I've only got seven tracks listed but I did find a reference to there being twelve - not sure if this is right. I might be forced to buy it in the end perhaps but would sooner avoid this if I can, not being a Melly fan. List above amended.

Is the Japanese Fontana in stereo, Tooter? Yes, it is. Listening again now.

I acquired the EP from eBay for one "album" included in the missing pictures list so I've put a picture of both sides of the disc on our site www.ronnieross.com in view of the lack of a cover. So the list is now just five:- (list moved to later post - Oct 11 2006) Still hoping to get all of them one day but gets more difficult with each success.
  6. Found an image, Jazzman4133 - you would need to search for "Russ Tompkins" to find it!!!

Another album has come to light which includes Ronnie Ross in the line-up. I already have a picture of the front cover but wonder if any member has it and could send me a scan of the cover back, and perhaps of the disc sides themselves if any more info on them. There was a copy on sale on eBay but the price went beyond my limit for (for me) such dubious material. It's "Platinum" by Salena Jones , backing band led by Martyn Ford (a name I had never encountered before).
  8. Reading this thread and thinking of my main preoccupation, Ronnie Ross, it's perhaps a little strange that there is no instance of him playing soprano sax as far as I know. He started on alto, took up tenor and clarinet, then baritone became his main. He also played flutes, alto clarinet, bass clarinet. Perhaps he just didn't like the soprano.
  9. Disc 1, part 2 from me. Not much, can only name some of the tunes. 10 "In a Mellow Tone" and 12 "Blood Count". 13 "Angel Eyes" and 14 "Fly Me to the Moon" (Not Rahsaan, is it?). 15 "Blue and Sentimental" and 17 "Almost Like Being in Love". I'm really looking forward to finding out about this one - my favorite track in the whole BFT. Now I can read the answers supplied so far by everyone. This comment posted on Disc 2 discussion by mistake yesterday.
  10. You won't read 'em on vis fred... MG Yeah, you put these on the Disc 2 discussion. Another iggerent furriner..... whattya gonna do? I knew it - I've been working too hard. I'll retire from the scene - for today, anyway.

  12. I haven't read Jim's comments but will just post what I think I might know about the other tracks on this disc before doing so (which I want to do as soon as possible). 4 is "Prince Albert" by Kenny Dorham I believe. A favorite tune for a long time. Two tenors, but who? 5 "Footprints" by Wayne Shorter and 6 is "Moanin' by Bobby Timmons (someone said his main claim to fame was writing it). 13 sounds like All and Zoot - I think I know this track but can't name the tune.
  13. I listened to 1, 2 and 3 with a sinking feeling. Is this going to be wall-to-wall funk, I asked myself. I regard funk as like salt in food; a little might be essential but too much and after the first mouthful or two it begins to pall, and badly. I know some can enjoy it and I suppose good jazz can win through whatever the format, but it's not for me. Anyway, I haven't got a clue about any up to there and likewise 4. Hawaian guitar? Not too bad. 5 is "What a Difference a Day Made" and things were looking up for me. Again I don't know who is the tenor man, or anyone else but liked it more than the foregoing. 6 is "Bluesology" by Milt Jackson so perhaps this is the MJQ. Now this is more like it. 7 - "The Preacher", based on the chords of "Show Me the Way to Go Home" and written by Silver. Jay and Kai? 8 back to funk - no idea Will post more later.
  14. I can nail 2 - the title track of this
  15. Files downloaded and I've tested a few (intriguing) samples so far. Looking forward to a lieisurely weekend to prepare some comments. Thanks, Dan.
  16. Timely reminder of the 'Bedazzled' film - it was repeated on UK late night TV the other night. The soundtrack caught my ear, with its groovy 60s big band charts in the background, apparently the work of Moore himself ( ). A certain baritone solo caught my ear and It sounded suspiciously like Ronnie Ross. I wonder if Tooter has heard that one? Total lack of awareness of this prospect here. I doubt I could have received it as our digital (Sky) box has just given up the ghost. No cable or anything like that - in fact, televison is becoming less and less a part of our lives as time goes by, despite the very infrequent gem such as "Bedazzled" would have been. You don't mention having recorded, sidewinder, so no luck on that score either I guess. I prefer not to see bad language on BB's but the temptation is great. This will have to do.
  17. At the end of an upload (already signed up) I got the "page cannot be displayed" notice but the file was still there for download okay. The only problem was I didn't get the link for deletion of the upload. I only got one notification for each of your files though, Dan, so presumably your first two tries did not complete. The limit is 1GB so these files are only a small fraction of what is supposed to be possible. I'm downloading the second now - takes about 45 minutes for each. Tampa should be nice and warm from what I hear
  18. It's nearly the end of the week and with the big build up for this one, I am looking forward to the link for the download. Keep checking email but nothing yet. All the better for the intensity of the anticipation though. Will it be tomorrow?
  19. The Day After It's on Howard McGhee's Sharp Edge date . Success again - thanks a lot, Chas. I will tell the dime-a-dozen clientele.
  20. Here's the link to another unidentified tune from a recent dime-a-dozen session. It's played by Art Farmer with Thierry Lang on piano. Does any one know what it is?

A new album acquired on eBay - vinyl - [Cleo Laine wit the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra] the latter playing alto sax under the psuedonym Virgil Nameless on some tracks. Ronnie Ross does not feature much - can be heard playing clarinet backing occasionally but it's a nice album nonetheless with good arrangements and fine singing by Dame (as she is now) Cleo. I can't say the acquistion was at great expense this time - just £0.99! I already had a picture of one of the issues - [she's the Tops] so the list of covers sought remains at six, as below. 1. 55/1 Leader: Tony Crombie Date: March 31 1955 Venue: London Label: Decca DFE6281, F10514, 10620, F10592, F10637 Album Titles: Annie Ross with Tony Crombie and his Orchestra, Presenting Tony Crombie No. 2 (EP) 2. 55/5 Leader: Cleo Laine Date: December 13 1955 Venue: London Label: Nixa NJE1010, PRT PYL6028 Album Title: Unforgettable Cleo Laine 3. 58/7 Leader: (Melody Maker All Stars) Date: November 1958 Venue: London Label: Pye Nixa NJT518 Album Title: (Melody Maker Jazz Poll 1958/1959) 4. 62/4 Leader: Don Rendell Date: September 6 1962 Venue: London Label: Pye 7NJ 2059 Album Title: The Jazz Stars 5. 78/1 Leader: Arthur Greenslade Date: January 1978 Venue: London Label: Pye NPSL18557 Album Title: George Melly With Orchestra Arranged And Conducted By Arthur Greenslade 6. 89/6 Leader: Chris Smith Dates: November 23 29 1989? Venue: Wembley, London Label: BBC CDTP818 Album Title: Chris Smith And His String Of Pearls Orchestra
  22. Right - I've listened to the George shearing version and definitely the same tune. Success despite my foregoing negative comment. Thanks very much, Evan. Mission accomplished.
  23. It sounds familiar to me, but then most tunes do But if you don't know it, Jim, I haven't much hope of success. Appreciate you trying.
  24. I see from verzend that the sample has been downloaded five times already - thanks to those who have listened so far.
  25. Thanks for trying Chris. I've now put the complete tune as played by Ray Brown and his Trio onto verzend so anyone who would be willing to listen to it should be able to download from this link. Should only take a few seconds. Hope it works.
