  1. BE idolized Harry by all accounts, possibly ergo wanting to die also after Harry's suicide. Of course, I can't really know. I saw the last trio at the Vanguard twice in a week in late '79. Bill hardly seemed like a man on the verge of suicide. The music was fresh and exciting and he was way into it.
  2. As an aside, does anybody here know the story Red Garland told about having a drink with Trane and asking him if he believed in the (new) music he was playing. Trane replied 'sort of. But if I stopped a lot of people would think I was a phony'. I wonder about the veracity of that story......
  3. He did not name names. As for CT, among other things he said that Evans' work was 'totally lacking in vitality...I can name 10 pianists I'd rather hear...he's a competent cat, that's all'
  4. Larry: Evans spoke many times of his preference for the discipline of form-particulary the song form-experiments w/o it on recording notwithstanding. Around that same period-1964-in an interview he took pianists playing free music and using the 'inch method' (finding the next phrase by venturing inches up the keyboard) to task. He was famously and viscously rebutted by Cecil Taylor for this. I think the film best summarizes his approach to playing.
  5. Music triumphing over pain-again.
  6. His (Bill's) analysis of how he approached Star Eyes shows he had a firm grip on what he was doing. He always said he had to build things from the ground up, not being as precocious as other people. This still stands as a good refrerence on how to approach playing jazz on any instrument.
  7. I think Sonny Rollins's involvement with free jazz may have been two-tiered in its reasons. Part of it seemed to be a genuine desire to expand the artistic pallette, and part not to be left behind by messrs. Coltrane and Coleman. He later stated in interviews that he preferred playing on form and 'so shoot me'. I'm surprised Mr. Baraka didn't focus on Trane more. Also, Sonny's recorded output since the later sixties is the topic of a whole other discussion.
  8. Ordered it from the library. We shall see what we shall see.
  9. He's turned me on to some great ASB singers. (Ex: Right now he's pushing Diana Panton, who is very good). No complaints here.
  10. He's had all kinds of PA announcements on WNYC about it and introduces his weekend show as being on WNYC, WNYC.org, and the Jonathan channel. Despite the odious (sp?) narcissism of the title it's got to be a good thing. I've become a fan (of the music he plays more than his oft-pendantic style) ever since he played Nancy Lamott singing Autumn Leaves grouped with When October Goes (from Sings the Lyrics of Johnny Mercer)---and I had to pull to the side of the road to lose it a little. A little John Pizzarelli is the price I had to pay for discovering other great performers. I can handle it.
  11. Neither could I. Below the second map is a bar that says "Showing all performers who played a session between 1943 and 1967". There is a circle at each end. Pull the circles in to set the beginning and end dates. Those performers who played within that date will be shown below the graph, with others grayed out. Still can't get anything to happen. Maybe it's me.
  12. So they either sweet talk WHCN into extending use of the space or become a homeless vagabond station. Sad in itself.
  13. I mean is this a space-leasing favor for a struggling entity or can they hunker down there until they (presumably) get it together?
  14. How long can BAI broadcast from CCNY for? Is there a limit?
  15. I mean did they purchase the building or will they be renting space?
  16. Anyone know anything about the building on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn BAI is supposedly moving into?
  17. This One's on Me is very nice indeed. The late Bobby Forrester did a great job on organ too. RIP to both.
  18. What did Pacifica have to do to 'convert' it?
  19. Do you think, given the signal's strength, that the FCC would grant that exemption? 99.5 FM is prime real estate.
  20. So the signal can only be sold to a non-commercial interest?
  21. Bump. Anyone been listening lately?
  22. Me either. Just straight shooting from a guy who's heard a lot in his years.
