  1. This topic came to mine after listening to an old interview from WKCR with Max Roach. I wish I had a copy of the interview. In the early 50s Max was going to record an album and was told to provide at least one original composition. He was telling Phil Schaap he was struggling to write something for the session the next day. His door bell rang to his apartment, when he opened it Bird came in and said he wanted to watch TV with Max. Max said he didn't have time to watch TV. After a few minutes, Bird asked what was the problem. Max told Bird he needed to bring a new piece to his recording session and was struggling. According to Max, Bird whipped out his horn and wrote something on the spot, jotted it down and said, "here you go, now let's watch some TV." The only Parker composition Max recorded when Bird was still alive was Chi-Chi. I guess that was the piece. Anyway, I know I never really think of drummers as composers, but many drummers do compose, including Max Roach. Who are some drummers that compose a lot and you like their skills as a composer?

  6. This is from Russell Malone's Facebook page. I do miss Mulgrew. What a master he was. Sonny Rollins LOVED the way Mulgrew Miller played the piano. After catching his show that night in Monaco, we stopped by Sonny's dressing room to pay our respects. After some conversation and laughs, Mr. Rollins looked at Mulgrew and then pointed to the piano and said, in that distinctive voice, "Mulgrew, there's the piano. Feel free to express yourself". Mulgrew played "Wouldn't It Be Loverly". The look on Sonny Rollins' face was priceless once Mulgrew started to play. Monaco 2007

  16. Does anyone know if this 5 CD set of singles released through the years by Blue Note contain different takes than what was on the albums? Some of the timings are different than what's on the albums. It may be that the 45's were cut down to fit on a side.
