  1. OK. Here's one that REALLY bugs me: Al Michaels has made a career out of mispronouncing the simple word "ball". For some bizarre reason, he insists upon saying "BOO-all". As in: San Francisco has the BOO-all on the 15 yard line. Al, Dude...the word is "ball"; B-A-L-L. Ball. Say Ball. It's not that complicated, big guy.
  2. FaceBook has allowed me to reconnect with HS friends and others I haven't seen in 35 years or more. It also helps me stay connected to family and colleagues. It ain't all bad, Guys.
  3. I read someplace today that the teams in MLB are paying out $3.1 million a day to players who are on the DL. Doesn't surprise me. And I want to clarify my earlier remarks: At no time do root for or want any player to get hurt. I just didn't like the way my comment read. The Padres are now the only team without a no-no. Really? Even when Latos was on the team...? Wow. That is a surprise to me.
  4. The Dodgers' Kemp is on the DL and the team gets swept by the Brew-has. Four game sweep. Gigantes are now only 5 games behind. June swoon, baby GO Giants!
  5. I have a friend/colleague/golfing buddy from British Columbia who has lost the "a-boot" accent. But when his Dad comes down for a visit, he brings a combination of a Scottish infused Canadian speech pattern that is just a joy to listen to...great guy, too My former boss, from Calgary, has just the slightest accent that if you didn't know he was Canadian, you would wonder where he was from. My problem is, they are both better golfers than I am Not really, eh? Take off, eh? The Canadian pronounciation of "out house" just frys me: Oot Hoose. Classic
  6. We get that same ex-player dryness (although perhaps with a different "accent") on Rangers radio from Steve Busby. Busby & Eric Nadel have turned into some of the best radio guys out there, afaic. Then again, I'm partial to radio baseball on general principles. I like radio games, too. Especially on long trips in the car.
  7. It re-charges my jets Seriously, if the biggest decision I have to make on vacation is do I go to town to buy the newspaper...it's been a great day! Don't go on holiday to Africa, then! MG Sounds like good advice if you're on safari, I would suppose.
  8. I saw Greg Maddux get his 300th win in SF. Even though my guys lost, it was still pretty cool to witness that

  10. Me, too. It is my idea of a great vacation
  11. Just say nice things about me, OK?
  12. You might enjoy Maddox's take on the word "epic." http://thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=epic Over used, yes. Mispronounciations....well, no.
  13. From the website: "Christopher Chantrill, writer and conservative". Shock of shocks. Just another "no taxes ever, cuts only" dude with a blog. Dime a dozen. So! Are things costing more for you, too? What happens if the money isn't there to pay for things in your house? Do you whine about how much it costs, or do you attempt to bring in more revenue? And governments, who pay more for gasoline, electricity/gas, infrastructure, running the "biz" and other pesky increases in cost pay for it, um...how again? That would be through the taxes. I dunno...seems to me this guy needs to get out of his penthouse and visit middle class folks who are struggling under the weight of "cuts only" types like this guy. Just sayin'.
  14. Not taking the bait, Pete.
  15. Vin Scully is, by far, my most favorite booth announcer alive today....and you're getting that from a die-hard Dodger Hater. Scully is hands-down the best in the biz. But as a day-to-day announcing with character and an encyclopedic knowledge of the game from a player's perspective, you simply cannot beat Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow. Those guys bring ballplayer humor and from a point of view fans never see. The subtle dugout nuances and back-door dry wit only a Pro would experience rival anyone in the biz, IMHO.
  16. "Ta" in place of "to". As in: I'm going ta school.
  17. Dialectical and/or regional variations don't bother me so much. In fact, to these ears, they are actually fun for me to listen to...being a Speech teacher and all.
  18. Quite. And when you're up against 9Z9 on a hot May afternoon, responsible to respond to the 'personalised learning' of all 28 while they don't want to do anything (and possibly being called on to help out a colleague with a confrontation next door), you sometimes get the idea that you are doing several jobs simultaneously. Waste time on internet? Chance would be a fine thing. Having said that, I really feel for those in professions putting themselves in direct physical danger, or responsible for life or death decisions; or those where keeping in a job requires you to sell a certain amount of stuff to people who don't really want it. Agreed. Police, Fire and EMTs don't get paid near enough for what they do.
  19. In the teacher biz, we work until the job is done. On average, I put in anywhere from 45-60 hours a week depending on the workload for that week. With 180-190 students' papers to read/grade then input into the grade book [via computer these days, thank God] lesson planning, parent conferences, department meetings, evening phone calls home, research and study time, after school coaching [or, in my case, stadium PA announcer] we work well past the time kids are dismissed. Weekend is just code for time to get more work done. Ugh.
  20. True dat. Still bugs me, though.
  21. But you're OK with Jag-you-uh? I have also heard Jaguar pronounced "Jag-U-ar". No big...I still can't afford one Off topic but a few students over my 30 years in the teacher biz have called me #1, you know, by waving with at me with one finger. However, the dictionary is full of words that were not there at one time, and these usages, if pervasive enough, might just get codified in the dictionaries too. The made-up word electronical when they mean electroniclly or electrical is one word I hope never makes the dictionary. Ugh.
  22. Yurp when they mean Europe. Bush II was [in]famous for this one.
  23. OK, so...will somebody PLEASE beat the Dodgers? I mean, is SF the only team that can? Geez.
