  1. Amazon has sound samples of this. I'm gonna pick it up!
  2. I picked up Roll Call and Open Sesame in this format today. I got them pretty cheap. They were released in 1998. Has anyone heard either of these? I don't recall any previous threads about them. I think the RVG of Roll Call sounds decent and I am wondering how these are. I think they are DVD Audio but it does not say on the label. They looked interesting so I grabbed them. Thanks!
  3. I'm gonna buy either "Closing of Winterland", "Three from the Vault" or the recent "Cow Palace" release. I've never heard any of these but I am familiar with the different periods. I'm leaning toward the Winterland set. Does it have good sound? Did they mix Donna down? (I hope, I hope) Just curious about some of your opinions. Thanks!
  4. I just picked up "Overdrive". Great lines! It's the first time I've listened to Stewart and I would like to get more. The only cd's I that I can find as available are on the Jardis label. Are there any others out there that are available? I may get a couple of the Jardis releases but I would rather get something that did not feature another guitar. Overdrive is superb! If you like swinging, inventive jazz guitar...Get it!
  5. I'm in the market for a new set of floor speakers. I've listened to the stuff at Best Buy and Circuit city (Klipsh and Boston Acoustics) but I kind of like the Paradigm Moniter 9 speakers. Anyone know anything about them? Anyone have any speakers suggestions in the $1000 a pair price range. If I were to buy tomorrow I think I would go for the Paradigms. I've never heard of them before but they sound very nice for the price to me. Anything else I should listen to before I buy? Thanks!
  6. Anyone compared the sound on the JSP and new RCA 3-cd set? My local Borders has the RCA and I'm thinking about using my 30% off coupon but sound quality is the most important factor to me. Thanks!
  7. I picked up DP 23 because 19 was not available. I have been looking for a good '74 concert and my local Borders has 24. Is 24 a good one or should I hold out and get 31 from the Dead store? Any favorite Brent era DP's or vault recordings? Thanks!
  8. I just noticed that my local Borders also has DP 20. Nice set list and, based on the sound clips, not bad sound. Any comments? Thanks!
  9. I am going to use my Borders coupon to fatten' up my Dead collection this week. Here is what I am considering. Dick's Picks 19 or 23 Rockin' at the Rhein Dead Set Nightfall of Diamonds or Without a Net I have several of the recently remastered vault recordings and a few Dick's Picks 29, 33, and 36. I'm not interested in shows with inferior sound quality. I've been to about 30 shows and some of them were about the most fun I have ever had. Any recommendations are appreciated.
  10. I thought that the audio and video on the Yazoo DVD was decent. I heard it through my tv speakers but considering the age of the films, I was impressed.
  11. Yazoo's "At the Jazz Band Ball" is available through Netflix. As Lon said, it has the Louis Armstrong performances I was looking for. It also has some great Bill Robinson, and more! I also pick up "Louis Armstrong in Scandinavia Vol. 1" and "Plays W.C. Handy". This weekend I may get a couple Fats Waller cd's. Can anyone recommend "Piano Masterworks Vol. 1 & 2 on EPM? They are easily available and have some of his early piano work. Is this a good source for these recordings? Thanks for the response, Lon and all!
  12. The Louis Armstrong filmed version of these songs have always been some of my favorite footage. I think it was recorded during a European tour in the early 30's. Is there more available than just Dinah and I Cover the Waterfront? Is there a DVD available of these complete performances and any additional footage from the same date? Thanks!
  13. What is the best available version of the Paris Concert on cd? I don't know how I missed it.
  14. The only one I don't have is TOKYO. I always figured thats where I'd draw the line. I hope I can find it tomorrow!!!
  15. It's out! I just picked it up at my local record store. Yes!
  16. I love this one! Tennesse Waltz and Little Girl Blue are two of the most memorable tunes on record for me. If you like Sonny, but discount this period of his career, check this one out!
  17. What's the best solo Fats Waller cd to get? Thanks!
  18. I just picked up Leadbelly: Take This Hammer on Bluebird and I am totally diggin' it. It's some of the most soulful, genuine music I've heard and the sound is great. What are the best CD's to get next? A couple more well chosen compilations with good sound preferabley, but anything good, with good remastered sound. Thanks.
  19. Just caught these guys in a free concert at the Athenaeum in Claremont, CA. Ron Stout, David Woodley, Gary Foster, Billy Harper, Gary Smulyan, Ray Drummond, and Andrew Cyrille. Great performance of fresh arrangements of Monk tunes. Billy Harper was blowing big. It's time to get more familiar with Billy Harper. The whole thing was top notch and the acoustics were dead on. Five minutes from home and absolutly free.
  20. I just saw Sonny Rollins at the Disney Concert Hall in L.A. The band consited of Sonny, Clifton Anderson, Bobby Broom, Bob Cranshaw, Steve Jordan, and Kimati Dinizulu. Nice band, nice concert, Sonny played well but never really reached the peaks that he usually does in concert. I was in the balcony and Sonnys horn was kind of buried in the mix for alot of the concert which may be part of the reason I feel this way. This is my ninth Sonny Rollins concert and its always a great time but at 74 it seems like he kind of has to pick his moments. I can't wait for the tenth.
  21. I made it and enjoyed it very much. Laid back big band versions of Moncurs music. Moncurs chops were pretty weak but the arrangments were great and it was a pleasure to see him. Benny Maupin was good and Peter Erskine really kept things tight.
  22. Dewey Redman was in fine form playing in a quartet/septet tonight in Claremont, CA. I am not very familiar with his music but he's the most beautiful balled player I have heard in a while. The program was nicely balanced and everyone played great. Nice room, close, and free. Perfect!

I'm about ready to replace may ancient stereo system. I am not looking for the best thing out there, just a good value that will provide a noticable improvement. Here is what I have: Yamaha Natural Sound RX 930 Receiver Roger Sound Lab 3800 Studio Monitors Yamaha DVD 655 CD changer Sony DVP NS500V DVD/SACD player The receiver and the speakers are my first priority.
