  4. It will only be open for a limited time in Washington Heights. So you're probably wrong. "The academy will open its new Charles Ives Studio to the public from Thursday to April 12, and from May 22 to June 15. Thereafter, it will open only for gallery exhibitions, although scholars, musicians and school groups can visit by appointment." The bottom line is that America doesn't care about it's heritage. The White House just dropped a bundle on a "Women in Soul" show last night with Aretha, Patti LaBelle, that renowned soul singer, Melissa Etheridge, and a bunch of other no names or no talents who will probably be forgotten in a few years. How much did that cost?

Amazing that no foundation, university, or the state or federal government could put up the $ to buy it and preserve it for posterity. The U.S. government probably spends more than that on crap like one State dinner. Then, when I thought about it, I wasn't surprised. America has no sense of history or dignity.

  11. A reported Groucho quote in a letter from Fred Allen to Groucho: "you were quoted in the dining room of this inn as of yesterday. a thyroid housewife, sitting behind me, said, 'it's like that funny story groucho marx told.' the funny story turned out to be the one about the man who was saying grace in a low voice - somebody at the table said, 'i can't hear you.' the man said, 'I wasn't talking to you.'"

  14. "George (Jessel) is unquestionably the most relentless speechmaker of our time. ... He speaks at weddings, funerals, and bar mitzvahs. Speaking that often, it's only natural that he sometimes gets confused. On one occasion, he married a thirteen-year-old boy to a woman who had been dead for three days."

  16. From a letter written to Warner Brothers, who had threatened to sue the Marx Brothers, who were about to make A Night in Casablanca. Warners had made Casablanca five years previously: "I just don't understand your attitude. Even if you plan on re-releasing your picture, I am sure that the average movie fan could learn in time to distinguish between Ingrid Bergman and Harpo. I don't know whether I could, but I certainly would like to try."

  24. You mean they knew or sensed they wouldn't? (Liittle surprise in the case of Bix, but Tesch? Wasn't his death accidental?) Bix, somewhere between perhaps and probably; Tesch IIRC was living in a fairly hell-for-leather, both-ends-of-the-candle manner, though he wasn't driving that car, Jimmy McPartland was. OTOH, as I said, "to get way too romantic no doubt." Wasn't it Wild BIll Davidson who was driving the car?
