  2. Listened this afternoon. Didn't have the sense of a gauze on the sound. Instead, I had the sense that either the recording was done wrong or that the pianists were covering too much of each other's territory. Not exactly the same, but somewhat similar to listening to King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band and having to work to sort of the musical lines. Concentrating is one thing when I listen to music. Working is a step beyond that. Is that a CD? No - an LP.
  3. Big Jay McNeely: Road House Boogie (Saxophonograph) Tenor sax as rhythm instrument
  4. Blue Note should have had an I Like Ike advertising campaign.
  5. I could be wrong, John, but I have a memory of you reviewing a Kalaparusha record years ago and writing that he sounded like he'd be a dinner guest who might eat the dinner plates. If my memory is faulty, please correct me.

  7. In my imagination, Cecil, Louis, Duke, and Bach get him talking. Then again, perhaps I have too much imagination.
  8. I imagine that I expected more than what I got. Sometimes parts are more than the whole. I'll give it another listen and see what results.
  9. Never "got" that one. Perhaps time for another listen. Things and people can change over time.
  10. Great album, but in its own sphere I wouldn't say it's overlooked... Right, but there a lot of people who are out of that sphere who would be knocked out by it, I think. How many people are in the sphere these days? Good choice, imo.
  11. Believe it or not, I've almost finished! Rather strange, but very good. I can't outright recommend the series for general consumption due to length (over 1,900 pp.!). That was televised in a classic series back in the 80s by the Beeb. I know of the series, but never saw any episodes. Now, having read the whole quartet, I'm amazed it was TV-serialized! Doesn't seem like very telegenic material, and I don't know how they managed to cut it down to a manageable size. Maybe I should check out a DVD or two. About ten years ago, my wife and I watched the Raj Quartet series over the period of a few weeks. During that period of time, she also read the entire book. Better she than I!
  12. One of the very few groups/artists for which I've bought every release, from Point of No Return to Yes, We Can. Revue was their first really great album, in my opinion, and is still one of my favorites. The only negative about this record is Stanley Crouch's liner notes. He seems to have felt that he had to build up the WSQ by knocking other musicians. Ironically, I doubt that he has much use for this record today.

  14. Joe McPhee: Glasses (Hat Hut)
  15. World Saxophone Quartet: Revue (Black Saint) Listening to this brought me back to the days when exciting new releases seemed to be coming out every month on Black Saint, Hat, Nessa, Emanem, FMP, Sackville, Arista Freedom - just to name a few - along with releases on a host of smaller labels. I used to walk into Tower Records on E.4th and Broadway, knowing that I'd have to make some hard choices, since there was so much to choose from. Days gone, won't come again.
  16. You provide the food. They provide the conversation. Seems fair to me.
  17. I probably have too much time on my hands. It's a beautiful day here and I started daydreaming about being at a dinner party with guests of my choosing who happen to be musicians. In my daydream, I was sitting around a table with Cecil Taylor, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charles Ives, and Johann Sebastian Bach. If you did the same, what musicians (I include singers, composers, conductors under the umbrella of musicians) would you choose? The table seats six, including you - a good number for conversations without things becoming unwieldy. Oh - and in my daydream, language differences are somehow not a problem. Hope this one hasn't been done before, or doesn't seem too flakey.
  18. Laura Bell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Bell Theresa Berkeley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theresa_Berkeley Mary Ann Nichols http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Ann_Nichols Is Docie Gillis Dobie's brother? He could be, but he's probably just me typing too fast. You have to be fast when you post on this thread.
  19. I'm not BillF, but I have the record. It was recorded in February, 1980. No problem with Shepp's intonation, at least to my ears.
