  6. There's a story in the liner notes of Dion's Bronx Blues CD concerning Buddy Lucas, and recounting a 1964 "disastrous gig at Long Island's Boulevard supper club": "I went in there with just myself on electric guitar and Buddy Lucas on harp," Dion laughs. "We're up there doing all this blues stuff, and all these people are walking in in tuxes, out for an elegant evening on the town. They never booked me back after that."

    Doc Pomus

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I always thought that Mort Shuman was mostly the music guy and that Doc Pomus was mostly the lyricist in that collaboration.
  16. I've never had a problem listening to and hearing Jackie McLean. To me, he has his own voice and he just sounds in tune with himself. I'm curious - how do people who have a problem with listening to Jackie McLean listen to Ornette, Don Cherry, Ayler, Monk, Von Freeman, Frank Teschemacher, to name a few?

    Doc Pomus

The Swedish "Whiskey, Women, and ..." label issued two Doc Pomus albums in the 1980's - his early recordings (mid 40's to mid 50's), demos, and some live recordings. The liner notes contain interviews with Doc Pomus and are fascinating. He began recording as a blues shouter - Joe Turner was an early influence - and recorded with Taft Jordan, Rex Stewart, Pete Brown, Chuck Wayne, King Curtis, Mickey Baker, Billy Butler, Sam "the Man" Taylor, and Jimmy Jones, among others.
