  3. I would happy to take those cumbersome, inconvenient OOP Mosaics off your hands.
  4. I love Showgirls! It's absolutely ridiculous- just like the whole idea of over-ambitious showgirls. The movie is much more of an accurate artistic portrayal of Vegas than Ocean's 11 (either version). It's silly because Vegas is silly. I think this is the same guy that did Robocop and Starship Troopers. A lot of people miss the satire element of these films.
  5. Life's also too short to not enjoy a lot of great music because of packaging. I'd be more than happy to take a rusty box set off someone's hands.
  6. I don't understand that. It's not as if you have to listen to all of it at any one point. You can burn/program/select the albums or sessions at will. But whatever... congrats to the buyer. I sure wish I could afford this right now.
  7. Che, as usual, you just don't get it. Without the money in space exploration, we still have enough money for social reform. We have enough food to feed the world. We have the medical technology and resources to cure millions of people. The barrier is politics, not money going to space. If you think scrapping the space program would feed more people, than you have no idea how government works.
  8. How about Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus Eric Dolphy And of course the singing... "Thank you for not applauding, dig?"

    Hubbard and Morgan

Hubbard has a more "breathy" tone.
  10. In every generation there are those that question the need to explore, to discover, to learn, and they are silenced in the annals of history by those who actually do explore, discover, and learn. There is no relation between space travel and social problems. The latter is political, not monetary.
  11. The only Frippertronic/Soundscape album I was able to listen to was Gates of Paradise, the musical eulogy to his mother. Very pretty. Otherwise, I can't fathom actually listening to guitar ambience alone for 60 minutes. But it works really well in the context of Crimson. The California Guitar Trio is a lot of fun, and their latest album, Whitewater, is beautiful, partly because it's not as gimmicky as the older work. I also have CD by the League of Gentlemen, a pop-ish group he was in in the 70s or 80s. Pretty cool stuff.
  12. That Iron Maiden song... it goes on and on and on and on and on *cue riff here*
  13. Kate's music is a mixed bag. Hounds of Love is a perfectly representative album of hers, since it contains both startlingly powerful songs and unpenetrable tracks that get lost and never go anywhere. My favorite album of hers is The Sensual World, where her skills are focused and tight. I also have a preference for Never Forever. The Dreaming is freakin' weird.
  14. The blues is black American folk music. Jazz is a product of the blues. It is by definition "related" to folk music. Any music created by the "common" people of a nation (as opposed to the aristocracy) is folk music.
  15. A Trick of the Tail. I got into it in college by hanging out with musicians and going the seemingly common rock->blues->jazz route of discovery.
  16. I just remembered there's another time Homer was insulting jazz by observing it's just music "they make up as they go along. Even I can do it" and then proceeds to sing Mary Had a Little Lamb twice. "That's the same thing, you just replaced 'des' with 'doos'" "Doh!"
  17. Other jazz on the Simpsons included an episode where Homer hired a private investigator to find out about Lisa's hobbies in an attempt to become a better father. He learned that her favorite album is Birth of the Cool and was playing the record for her. Another episode included Lisa complaining that no one shared her interest in jazz-fusion.
  18. I plan on using discsox to store the CDs that came in regular jewel cases. I bought 250 sleeves just to try it out and they're great. They fit the back liner, two CDs (for double albums and bonus CDs/DVDs, etc) and the liners. Keeps it all nice and flat. For large collections, jewel cases are a waste of space. I plan on getting the biggest cabinet that fits 1000 CDs. Hopefully it will be enough. My box sets are stored on DVD/CD metal racks and book shelves.
  19. For just 4 CDs? Man, you have got to find better places to buy your box sets. I paid about 40, and since it's open, I cut the price in half, and always sell it cheaper on boards than on ebay too be nice. PS: since I have a lot of interested buyers, I can safely say that I'm selling this because I got the JSP set and the sound is so much superior.
  20. I am selling the complete Hot 5s and Hot 7s box set from Columbia. This is the "long-box" packaging. Box is opened but in near-mint condition. No scratches or scuffs or anything on the CDs or the packaging, just a bit of shelf wear on the corners. $20 Paypal. Email me at take5b@yahoo.com (no PMs, please)
  21. I just finished listening to the entire box set (@ work) and it actually plays better the more I listen to it. There seem to be less vocals the further on you get into the set, and some of the instrumental tracks on the last couple of discs are smokin'. Most of the vocals are ok and plenty are enjoyable- Herman's and the chick singers. The Glenn Miller-type chorus vocals on a few tracks I can live without. I skipped maybe half-a-dozen tracks, which is mighty fine ratio.
  22. I've been/will be spending a lot of weekends in Boston to see my girl. She occassionally enjoys a bit of jazz, so do can you guys let me know what clubs provide the music? Any links to schedules would be fantastic, TIA
  23. Only a few months ago. Might have been this forum, or another, or allmusic.com, or googling. I've since acquired quite a few off of e-bay. My first was the New Orleans Atlantic sessions, 'cause I've wanted to get some of that style in my collection. Then came Teddy Wilson, then the e-baying... I so very much want to find nice copies of the Blakey and Mingus CD sets. Most recent and now playing: Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams
  24. Donald Byrd & Pepper Adams complete Blue Note. My first listen of this set and my first time hearing Byrd as a leader. Damn that boy can play some horn!
  25. I have their stuff. I like them, but they often get a bit too "quirky" for me and don't grab me personally as much as others. Good band, though. I think Stupid Dream came next. Anyway, their most recent stuff is a bit heavier and, to me, much better. Ah, ELP. Funny how they can inspire such derision from so many. I think their incessant antics are fun and I take it a very much tongue-in-cheek, which is the best way to listen to any rock music.
