Coltrane Complete Prestige Box
trane_fanatic replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Or the Miles or Dolphy or Pepper or a buncha other ones... Round 2 maybe? -
I had purchased your Art Ensemble box there a while back, Chuck.

I got this in my e-mail today: August 23, 2006 A message from our C.E.O. A message from the CEO of Tower Records: I’d like to personally update you on what’s happening at Tower and why this is such good news for you. As the CEO of Tower, I announced Sunday night that Tower is filing Chapter 11 reorganization. That might not sound like good news, but for the over 3,000 employees of Tower and Tower.com, as well as for our millions of loyal customers, it’s actually very good news. Here’s why: We have the financing in place to continue operations as usual and have the product you have come to expect in our stores. And if we don’t, we can get it for you. It also means that we are now positioned to sell our company within the next 60 days or so, in time to have even more product for the holiday season. Most importantly, as usual, Tower gift cards are still good in any of our stores or on Tower.com. And now the best news of all: take advantage of our "Buy 4 Get 5," in store promotion and, when you bring this email in to any store between now and September 4, we’ll give you an additional $5.00 "CEO Discount" as a token of our appreciation for your loyalty. More savings for you! Russ Solomon, the founder of Tower Records, recognized the need to cater to you, the music and movie junkie, by opening the world’s first music superstore in 1960. Today Tower is still the industry leader, thanks to you, our customer. So come by and see what’s new in our stores and we’ll continue to keep you posted on our progress. Joe D’Amico, CEO

http://www.allhiphop.com/features/index.asp?ID=1503 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AllHipHop.com: Taking it back to the music, when you deal with so many different genres from Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, or even something like Coltrane what’s the one thing that's remained constant throughout it all? Pharrell: You know what…I just love all kinds of music. Speaking of Coltrane, “Giant Steps” is a very generic track in comparison to his whole entire catalogue. But “Giant Steps” in itself was brilliant because the steps he decided to take were incredible. That song is based off of an exercise [The Chromatic Scale] by this brilliant Russian scientist and composer by the name of [Nicolas] Slonimsky-it’s incredible those exercises, and I only know because Quincy Jones told me. I love it, I can recognize it but I can’t read the keys, I can only read percussion. I was classically trained as a percussion player, that’s how I got into music to begin with-when I was in seventh grade. He [Quincy Jones] challenged me like, “Yo, you should really be able to read it, because if you can read it then when you’re on a plane you won’t have to do what you do.” Right now I have to remember it or hum it into my phone until I get to a piano, and then when I’m at the piano I play it out. Once I can play it out I can remember it until I can get in the studio. He’s telling me that I can write it on napkins, you know just write down like F-sharp, [laughing] I don’t even know if there is an F-sharp. AllHipHop.com: So this is like transcribing music? Pharrell: Yeah. You can just go into different keys-it’s amazing. I know this is like getting off of Coltrane but that dude was incredible. I love classically trained piano players, the ones that I know of--I don’t know them all, but the ones I know of are great. That s**t is just inspiring to me.

That was also released as a K2. I got one from the Concord blowout.

Andre 3000 of OutKast to "rework" Kind Of Blue
trane_fanatic replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
'TLB' was hot garbage & barely listenable. Amazing what hype can do for a record. However, I agree with you about ?uesto. The Roots, now there is a band that has put out consistently good to excellent albums. Can't wait for "Game Theory". -
ccmusic.com I don't see any mention of a sale, at least on their website. Is it a coupon code? Thanks.

Andre 3000 of OutKast to "rework" Kind Of Blue
trane_fanatic replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Why does Hollywood keep re-making old TV shows and Movies? Why do jazz musicians keep revisting the standards? This isn't quite the same as playing any old standard. This is about reworking one of the most revered albums of all time. Expectations are a bit higher. Guy My thoughts exactly. OutKast put out four classic hip-hop albums and, unfortunately, have been media darlings ever since for experimenting with stuff they would have been better off leaving alone. If some newbies had released overpraised garbage like "Speakerboxx/The Love Below", they would have been luck to sell 100 copies. -
Coltrane Complete Prestige Box

To my ears, early '90's Fantasy CDs generally sound pretty damn great. There was a nice booklet with mine. Are you sure it was the same set? -

The Evans material is essential any way you can get them. I've been playing the box all weekend, just absolutely sublime and gorgeous sounds. -

To my ears, early '90's Fantasy CDs generally sound pretty damn great. Yep, just got the Debut Records Story box too in my second order and the sonics on that set are also pretty damn MF nice. -

Ya know, for a set that came out in '91, the sound quality of this s--- sounds damn MF good. Ditto for the Evans box. -
Andre 3000 of OutKast to "rework" Kind Of Blue

Andre's Prince imitations on The Love Below were awful and their new Idlewild soundtrack is pretty lame stuff too. I just don't know that Miles would want a pale imitation of one of his masterpeices especially with his old buddy Wynton on them. -
I'm a OutKast and hip-hop fan in general, but this is redeckuless... http://xxlmag.com/online/?p=3960#comment-88709 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “[Andre ‘3000′] Benjamin is also currently working on a new jazz project tenatively titled “Kind of Black: Benjamin on Davis” in which he reworks the classic 1959 work “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis. Benjamin is to be joined on the project by two Grammy-winners: Acclaimed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and popular Roots drummer/producer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson.” - USA Today If Andre’s past reverence for jazz classics is any indication, this will surely make Doo-Bop sound like Illmatic. And Wynton must be real hard up for cash to be collaborating with those oh so ignorant rap types.

You cannot cancel or alter an order in any way once it is placed online. That was according to the Concord rep I spoke with on the phone a long while back. -
Wow, 150 cds! Or at least 100+ with a few box sets. Yea, I think I'm gonna take this stuff home in sections over many days. I'll be broke for a while with this self-inflicted damage on my credit card. The life of a hopeless music addict...*sigh*.

You should be getting one very soon. My massive first order of $450 placed July 15 arrived on Monday at my workplace. The box is so huge it's still sitting in my cubicle at work and I have to find a way to get it home. The packaging is exceptional though (got the Trane and Evans boxes, plus pretty much every K2, OJC, OBC and Stax release I don't have yet divided up in neat little boxes.)

I stopped in at the Tower on Columbus & Bay here in SF last night to pick up Sun Ra's "Space Is The Place" at the Impulse sale. Asked the young lady at the counter whether they are closing down and her reply was "No, we always have sales." Take it FWIW. Is Tower going the way of Whorehouse Music & Sam Fooley? Time will tell. As a former Whorehouse employee, I can relate to upper management lying about they are in good shape, everything's gonna be alright and one day, boom... the ax falls on everybody.

About 105, plus the Evans & Trane boxes. It's the first of three orders for me. I can see why you'd prefer to get your orders shipped to work then... The worst thing is that their policy doesn't allow for any changes by phone after you click the "submit" button. I gotta give them a call Monday and see what the deal is when the confirmation e-mail shows a different shipping address. Hopefully, those other two can be shipped to work, although they are much smaller compared to this garagantuan behemoth.

My order of July 15th just shipped. According to the e-mail, they are sending the 24-lb. box to my house. Even though I had specified for it to be shipped to WORK, they are delivering it to my billing address (HOME). My family isn't going to be too happy now.

Their customer service line is the worst. It's like those David Spade credit card commercials. Robotic wooden voices saying "no" or "I don't know" to everything.
-
It's gone for good again, I think.

Coltrane Complete Prestige Box
trane_fanatic replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
What rule instructs you to listen to them all at once? None, but I've gotten to the point where I like the individual albums. You tend to lose that with a box. And the 16 are not just leader Cds but dates in which he participated as a sideman. Just too much. They shoulda called this box "The Complete Prestige Recordings Of John Coltrane On Sessions Which He Led Or Was A Sideman On Except With Miles (Caution: For Die-Hard Trane Fans Only Or Your Head Will Detonate)." It's not for everyone, but I can't wait for my copy to arrive (there's never too much Coltrane, IMO). I just have the K2 of the "Coltrane" album from this period even though my user name would suggest otherwise. -
I accidentally ordered 3 copies of Art Pepper's "Ballads By Five". Still have no idea how that happened. I had checked my list several times before submitting.
