  1. http://www.suntimes.com/output/entertainme...ws-xreco23.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eugene Record, Chi-Lites' musical guiding force, dies July 23, 2005 BY STEPHANIE ZIMMERMANN Staff Reporter Eugene Record, whose velvety voice and talent for writing soulful ballads for local soul superstars the Chi-Lites, died Friday at his daughter's south suburban home after a long battle with cancer. He was 64. For a generation of fans reared on the soul sound, Chi-Lites hits such as "Have You Seen Her," "Oh Girl" and "Coldest Days of My Life" were part of the musical backdrop of their lives during the 1970s. And even though they might not know Eugene Record's name, legions of young music fans continue to be exposed to Mr. Record's music in such varied places as Beyonce Knowles' hit "Crazy in Love" (which was remade from the Chi-Lites' "Are You My Woman") and Fantasia Barrino's controversial "Baby Mama," which samples Chi-Lites' music. "It brought us back into view," said bandleader Marshall Thompson, who remained friendly with Mr. Record even after the band's original lineup split in 1976. Mr. Record, who later rejoined the band for several more years, is an integral part of a retrospective DVD the group plans to release in about 30 days, Thompson said. As a student at Englewood High School in the 1950s, Mr. Record played with The Chanteurs, a band that included Robert "Squirrel" Lester and Clarence Johnson. The three men later formed the Hi-Lites with Thompson and Creadel "Red" Jones. By the mid-'60s, Johnson left the group, and it changed its name to the Chi-Lites in a nod to its hometown. 'Fantastic lead singer' Thompson, the group's drummer, was the Chi-Lites' leader and relentless publicity machine. But Mr. Record provided other key ingredients to the group's future success: a smooth voice and soulful songs about love won and lost. The group caught its big break when Thompson happened to run into singer and producer Otis Leavill on a city bus. Leavill suggested they audition for producer Carl Davis. That, in turn, led to a contract with Brunswick Records and their first national hit, "Give It Away," in 1969. Longtime WVAZ-FM (102.7) disc jockey Herb Kent, who has followed the band since its beginnings, said Mr. Record had "God's gift" of musical ability. "He played guitar, he wrote and he sang lead on most of the hit songs of the Chi-Lites," the V-103 DJ said. "I think his legacy was being a fantastic lead singer in a group out of Chicago that just smacked of Chicago and sweet love music . . . sweet, haunting love music that we'll probably never see the likes of again." The band wasn't limited to love songs, however. Their "Give More Power to the People" album was radical at the time for its foray into race and social justice. Mr. Record left the band in 1976 to launch a solo career, releasing three albums but having limited commercial success. He rejoined the band in 1980, but left again in the late '80s and became a born-again Christian and gospel singer. In 1998, Mr. Record released a gospel album, "Let Him In." He had planned to remix and re-release it, said his wife of 31 years, Jacki Record, but he fell ill before he could realize his plans. Jacki Record said her husband's attraction to Christianity in his later years wasn't a response to any one event but rather a spiritual journey Mr. Record had been undertaking for some time. Even so, he still got a kick out of seeing young black pop stars using his classic material in their own songs -- a sign that his life's work is still relevant. Funeral arrangements were pending.
  2. Happy bee-lated b-day, J Larsen! I coulda swore I went to high school witcha. ← Which high school? ← Hmm, I was right. Thanks for the e-mail.

  4. I was almost strictly a Marvel head when I was a young un although I was a big fan of the Frank Miller Dark Knight and Watchmen series too. Since I grew up in the late 80s - mid 90s, I missed the Silver Age of Marvel Comics, but there were still decent storylines and artwork back then. I stopped collecting em in 94 when I went off to college. Since then, Marvel has gone bankrupt, I believe and the Marvel Enterprises of today is a shell of it's former self more interested in movie scripts and merchandising than anything else. Walked into a comic shop for the first time in years a while back and how things have changed. Books are outrageously overpriced (even adjusted for inflation), have gargantuan amounts of ads and seem to have recycled concepts. The artwork appears to be influenced more by anime than anything else. I miss the good ol' days. Here are 2 great cover sites I found... http://www.comics.org/ http://www.samcci.comics.org/ Reminisce away, folks.
  5. The Oakland musician died of a heart attack at age 35. He was very well known in these parts and was signed to MoJazz in the 90s. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:i7ae4jj71wa4 http://music.channel.aol.com/artist/main.adp?artistid=127390
  6. Western Digital has been a rock solid brand for me. I've had bad luck w/ Maxtor and heard horror stories about Seagate. So who knows?
  7. how so? ← As far as I know, Damon Albarn of Blur, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, ?uestlove of The Roots, amongst others, have criticized it as being more show that action. Cancelling the debt and reworking trade laws of corrupt African governments may do more harm than good in the end. Bob Geldof recently said Bush has "actually done more than any American president for Africa." The heart is in the right place, though.
  8. Thoughts? Comments? I know there were a few musicians who said it was full of shit politics-wise and turned it down.
  9. If this is the way you really feel, you have no right to your "phony balony" screen name. ← You are absolutely correct. I have no right to it. The blasphemy... I can't believe I also possess the temerity to live on a limited budget even though I have bought every other actual Impulse album of his. Anyways, I kept "Living Space" and you're right, Guy. This is towards the end of the classic quartet's run and the way they "play" off of each other is beautiful.
  10. Is the long version of 'Dusk Dawn' (10:49) on "Kula Se Mama" the same as the one on "Living Space"? I had ordered both of them along with "Sun Ship" and they finally arrived in my mailbox today. Just noticed the track times. I abhor duplicate songs on different albums and may return "Living Space" (still sealed) which appears to be outtakes and according to allmusic.com, the same time period.
  11. Also, how long do the average pair of phones last? It seems like they die from after several months to 2 yrs no matter how well you take care of them or what quality/price range they are. Sonys and Pioneers have the best sound for mid-range headphones, but are the absolute worse in terms of shelf life despite their name. I'm really getting tired of replacing my shit so often. How do you folks preserve the longevity of your soundcups? Thanx in advance.
  12. Don't know there are things such as "good deals" or "bargains" at eBay anymore.
  13. Thanks for your reply, jbb. It is appreciated. I am all about the music rather than profit and these "investors" who snatch up multiple copies to sell them for exorbitant prices ruin a lotta of the fun for me. They have the right to make a profit, but at the same time... *sigh* I am gonna need a miracle. I should snatch up the Syreeta reissue before they're all gone too. Have you got that yet or the Motown singles box set?
  14. I think I procrastinated a little too long on these 2 titles and now they're OOP. Do any of you guys know what other avenues I have besides eBay? Some of you experienced collectors may know some options I may not be aware of. Thanks in advance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eddie Hazel - Game, Dames And Guitar Thangs http://rhinohandmade.com/browse/ProductLin...sso?Number=7868 David Ruffin - David - The Unreleased Album http://hip-o-select.com/catalogue_ruffin.asp
  15. He was scheduled to play the finale of the SFJAZZ festival with Paula West on June 26. They replaced him w/ Andy Bey at the last minute though probably because of his health. RIP.
  16. Oh, I'm a paranoid idiot. It worked without the w3 a few days ago though.
  17. Fantasy (RIP)? Will we see what's left of the catalog on the Concord website? Maybe they're just doing maintenance and paranoia is creeping in, hopefully.
  18. Are they actual retail CDs shipped out or do they have the BMG stamp where the bar code should be?
  19. If CDex doesn't work, there is also poikosoft, which has a 30-day trial. poikosoft
  20. Nah, I'm pretty sure there's 71. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sigh... I give up. It's nap time. *logs off board and head hits pillow*
  21. Nope, no Rhodes. Just Herbie on a regular set of 88 keys.
  22. Thanks fo da laffs, guyz. But can I get opinions on 'Free Form' itself, please? It is appreciated.
