  1. Thanks for the heads-up, I'll check it out. I gave that one a spin yesterday as well. One of my favourites. I also like the duet record he did with Greg Goodman around the same time. You probably know but I'll just throw it out here, that the "Vaincu. Va! Live at the Western Front" was recorded within a week of "Finger Palace," i.e., Parker is playing at the same high level on both.
  2. What is your opinion on this one? I'm planning on doing an order from NoBusiness after my vacation in august, and this one is on the "maybe" list (as I'm definitely going for "The Freedom Principle" album with the same line up) Just got it, have given it a couple of listens, and I think it is pretty good. A high energy album. Amado and Evans go at it hammer and tong, reminded me of Peter Evans and Evan Parker on "Rocket Science." I think you would like it. WP: Another new arrival: MALUS - Nate Woley (tp, amplifier), Hugo Antunes (b, amplifier), Chris Corsano (d, amp). No Business LP. First listen, I liked Side A quite a bit, but Side B seemed to me to not get off the ground. I owe it some further listening though.
  3. LIVE IN LISBON: Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio & Peter Evans. No Business LP.
  4. Thanks! When I saw there were topics about Berne, Parker etc I just had to join in. I'd highly recommend the Trio set, no worries with the dual drummer scenario, it works beautifully, as it should with those two players. The packaging is secondary but it's good to hear that the "Duets" set is packaged nicely as that's in the queue. I placed the Trio order this morning with Amazon, which had it for $37.19, includes free shipping, not a bad price. I'll work around to the duo box eventually. I'm particularly keen on the duos with Katherine Young.

  6. Boy oh boy, people are bringing out the heavy vinyl the last few days
  7. I've had that Braxton on my short list of CDs to buy, and am not sure myself why I haven't already picked it up. I do think I was a little concerned about how well that two-drum arrangement worked. Not a concern about the drummers themselves but how they would be deployed. Glad to read your positive comment on that aspect of it; that's encouraging. BTW, welcome to the Board!
  8. What do you think of this one? Is it a collective/group performance with certain instruments featured on each track, or Stevens in duo/trio with various performers?

  10. It's been a while since I heard this one, but I recall it being good (Hmmm, I should give it a spin!): Bass Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Arranged By – Willem Breuker Double Bass, Arranged By – Arjen Gorter Drums – John Engels Music By – Eric Dolphy Piano, Frank van Bommel Tenor Saxophone, Flute – Alex Coke Trumpet – Eric Vloeimans
  11. Actor James Garner has passed away: http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/james-garner-leading-man-of-film-and-television-dies-at-86/2014/07/20/878167f4-c5da-11df-94e1-c5afa35a9e59_story.html http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/20/showbiz/james-garner-death/index.html?iref=allsearch For me, Garner will always be "The Rockford Files." Loved that show back in the day!

  14. It took me a while to find "Love Call" in decent condition and at a decent price, but it was worth the wait. I love the cover too.
  15. Glad you are enjoying it!

  17. Very cool! Certainly a must-attend if one is anywhere near Chicago.
  18. I was a teenager when the eponymous album came out. My friends and I thought it was pretty damned exciting. That was my gateway to the blues.

  21. Bobby is a wonderful guy as well as musician. At the WIndup Space, I asked him what John Stevens was saying to him in the cover of the "Bobby Bradford with John Stevens and the SME." He had me laughing with his description of Stevens' absolute conversational intensity.
  22. The Prodigal Son Son of Sam Samson
  23. It's a nice group on "Obbligato." Rainey, Laubrock, Alessi, and Gress. I saw Rainey, Laubrock and Alessi in Baltimore (Davis got sick and couldn't play) and it's clear they've formed a solid playing relationship. If they had the CD there, I would have bought it. Anyway, I suppose Rainey wanted to do something different, and I can understand that. Maybe they're taking a leaf from Braxton with a "standards" album.
  24. It's not rare actually. For example: http://Walter Williams, Mississippi man who awoke in body bag, dies Still, a very traumatic occurrence.
  25. LIGHTNING OVER WATER - Ken Vandermark & Paal Nilssen-Love - Laurence Family. LP2 of 2 plus 7". If you like either of these guys, you should like this set. No great surprises, but very well-played.
