  2. I hadn't played this in a while and was really surprised how straight-ahead this session was. Prettily played and all, but still...
  3. Thoughts? I like it, on first listen, but I don't find the electronic aspects of the group to be all that interesting or extraordinary, but then I think that way about much of the electronic work being done in the field. Having said that, there is a nice feel to the group play, KV sounds good (and instantly recognizable), and his interaction with Daisy provides the real thrust to the music. If you like its predecessor, you'll like this.
  4. PARKEN - Han Bennink (d), Simon Toldan (p), Joachim Badenhorst (cl, bcl).
  5. CYNOSURE - Trevor Watts String Ensemble - Ogun LP. String ensemble suggests quiet chamber music, but not in this case. It rocks pretty nicely.

AFAIC, Roscoe Mitchell sets the bar for today's performer. No, I think he sets the bar for himself. Which is the way it should be. And the AEC's adoption of "costume" for its stage performances was designed to both break down conventions while also confronting audiences provocatively with a range of different meanings. I don't care if someone doesn't like Malaby's playing, based on the playing. But on looks? That's stupid.
  7. SAHEB SARBIB QUARTET - UFO! LIVE ON TOUR - Cadence Jazz LP. Sarbib (b, p, shenai), Mark Whitecage (as), Daunik Lazro (as), Martin Bues (perc). 1979. Talk about outsider artists, Sarbib must qualify. Very elusive figure, but the results on this LP are very real indeed. Love the double alto attack of Lazro and Whitecage.

You want a dress code, try Wynton and his crowd. All shirt.
  9. Fighting a stubborn cold, and nasty wet -cold weather, took a run up to Philadelphia on Friday evening 4/4 to catch JOOKLO DUO, from Italy, for some finely frenzied free blowing and drumming, at Pageant Soloveev Gallery. Also caught on same bill Jack Wright group with Michael Evans on percussion (and I do mean percussion), and Joe Moffett on trumpet. Both sets very rewarding, enough to justify the I-95 runs.

  13. Yes, it's called bleed-through or print-through. You might actually be hearing the flip side of the tape bleeding through, not necessarily the over-recorded material. Of course, it could be both too.

  19. The eyewitness account was interesting and rather amusing. I'm looking forward to this but the idea of 5 conga players sends chills down my spine
  20. I've been around here a lot, and I've been gone a lot. It's nice to be able to leave and feel you can still come back. Or that there is a place to come back to. Will it always be that way? Another questions occurs to me: If the Politics thread had not been dumped, would there still be an Org Board? I was gone when that took place, and it was nice to return to a politics-free zone. It felt immediately like the right thing. Well, thanks!

  22. I guess he's not a fan of Art Blakey.
