  1. Nice. Played their EP with various versions of Sun Ra's Nuclear War a couple of nights ago. Indie 7" morning for me today... Death Cab for Cutie - The Sound of Settling Damien Rice - Unplayed Piano Trash Can Sinatras - Acoustic Sessions
  2. FYI... Dusty Groove has been getting batches of new OJC LP's and selling them for $6.99!
  3. hehehe... you and me both! I figured they were digital too until he said otherwise. Heck, I even have an OJC identification guide gathering dust from that forum somewhere.
  4. Actually, a Fantasy rep. who is a frequent contributor to another forum / mailing list I frequent has repeatedly stated that the vast majority of OJC LP's, despite the jacket text, are actually made with analog masters w/o, as stated in another thread, the use of processing or equalization which "taints" some of the current digital reissue programs. Unfortuneately, given the breadth of the Fantasy / OJC catalog, he has not been able / willing to take Y/N inquiries for specific titles. The $10 Acoustic Sounds OJC additions came up this week and he reiterated his previous statements regarding analog mastering for OJC LP's. YMMV, but he seems a trusted source and even arranged a tour of the Fantasy vaults for a forum gathering two years ago.
  5. This worked so well for my Atlanta trip I thought I'd ask about Boca / Fort Lauderdale music and record shops. Any combination of shops with a decent selection of vinyl and / or jazz... I'll be there for a week so should have some time to hit the stores. May be able to head to Miami for a couple of days as well if there are shops of note there. Thanks!
  6. lol... I just put Ocean Rain on the TT!
  7. Last night and tonight's selections... Blue Aeroplanes - Loved (10" EP) - Not bad, only picked it up b/c I'm a sucker for covers of Sweet Jane Art Farmer / Donald Byrd - Two Trumpets (German OJC) - w/ J. McClean, Barry Harris, Doug Watkins & Art Taylor (!) Ted Curson - Fire Down Below (OJC) And a few patricia-like finds at $3 each... Wayne Shorter - Night Dreamer (RVG Blue Label) Lee Morgan - Cornbread (VAN GELDER Liberty) Paul Chambers - Whims of Chambers (Blue Label Stereo crap... wish I had this in mono) Stanley Turrentine (LT Series) Joe Pass - Joy Spring (LT Series)
  8. Julian Cope is an acquired taste... much prefer Ian McCullough with Echo & the Bunnymen than Cope & TTE myself. Only Cope song I even remember these days is World Shut Your Mouth...
  9. Actually, the Conn's state they are "mastered from the original analog sources." The Top 10's do not appear to make such a claim, but sound very good anyway. According to Robert May's BN labelography, there were apparently mastering differences between the US and UK Top 10 pressings. Not sure how to tell the difference between the two though.
  10. Yep, these are Conn's / Top Ten's sitting side by side with the Scorpio reissues. The Conn's / Top Ten's have the corresponding BN sticker, Conn catalog numbers, and correct reissue year on the back cover. Leeway - #32089 and not 4034 Blues in Trinity - #32093 and not 4006 Basra - #20911 and not 4205 etc... Scorpios, as you said, have original catalog numbers, do not have the BN sticker, and were priced at $9 - $10.
  11. I picked this up in Atlanta last week and thouroughly enjoyed it until... 1 - I Believe I Can Fly 2 - I got home and *really* listened to it Maybe, I liked it because... - It was better in the rental car fighting through Atlanta traffic than local music stations - it was better than the litany of high school football sports talk shows on the radio... High School Football!?!?!?!? WTF? - I'm a sucker for dueling bari's - I'm a big Bluiett fan On 2nd listen at home, it really isn't that good, average at best. If I had remembered it this morning, I would have traded it in for something else this afternoon.
  12. Anyone else notice sealed BN Conn LP's from the 90's showing up at local outlets? I've seen very few over the last few years, but in the last week I've seen a decent number in Atlanta, Chicago, and here in St. Louis. I snatched up a 2nd copy of Basra last week in Atlanta, Shorter's All Seeing Eye over the weekend, and Leeway and Blues in Trinity today. I left way more on the shelves than I bought though. Euclid Records had multiple copies of many of the Conn's on the shelf. None at too high a price either... I paid $11 - $13 each.
  13. More from the Atlanta pile... Rolf & Joachim Kuhn Quartet - Impressions of New York (Impulse Mono Black / Red ABC Label) Jimmy Smith - Bucket! (New York USA w/ Van Gelder) Wayne Shorter - Introducin... (Scorpio reissue of Veejay release) Thurston Moore, Evan Parker, Walter Prati - The Promise (Fruit Tree)
  14. Working through my Atlanta purchases while working on a laptop review... Acer Ferrari 4000 anyone? Laura Cantrell - Humming by the Flowered Vine Lighthouse All-Stars - Sunday Jazz a la Lighthouse (German OJC) Lighthouse All-Stars - Volume 6 (German OJC) Charles Mingus - Town Hall Concert (German OJC) And finally got around to revisiting some CES purchases... MUCH easier to stomach at $20 a pop vs the $33 MSRP! John Jenkins (Classic 200g Mono) Lee Morgan - Indeed (Classic 200g Mono) Sonny Clark - Sonny's Crib (Classic 200g Mono)
  15. Don't forget the German OJC's that have come to market in the last 4 - 5 years. I ran into a large selection while in Atlanta last week. Same store had a nice selection of sealed older OJC's at MSRP and lower. Heck, I picked up a sealed 3LP JATP Pablo for $10! wolff - I've yet to pick up the 45RPM's either as the price is a bit daunting. $50 for one LP of music vs. 5 OJC's at $10 a pop. I'm sure the sound is great, but not the best bang for buck on the music front.
  16. Up for air and lower price.
  17. duh... thanks Wolff / Don... bad beer on the brain I guess...
  18. Update: Finished up too late at work to make a complete run, but I was able to hit Full Moon, Wax 'n' Facts, Satelite, and Criminal. First, big thanks to Chuckyd4 for the Full Moon rec'. This shop will replace Wax 'n' Facts as my first stop when in ATL. Nice selection of new releases / reissues in the Rock, Alt, and Jazz bins. As far as Jazz goes, plenty of new and NOS reissues (OJC's, German OJC's, 90's Impulse and the odd BN reissue, plenty of the recent Scorpio sourced Columbia, RCA, Fantasy catalogs. I thought pricing was very fair, if not lower than what I usually see in STL. NOS OJC's and Pablo's were priced at $5 - 7, the 90's Impulses were in the $15 range, and the Scorpios were $9 or $10. CD selection blows, but I did pick up a Shepp / Waldron Billie Holiday Tribute CD. Wax 'n' Facts is hit and miss for Jazz. I had a nice BN haul there 3 - 4 years ago, but only the occaisional items since. I have to give them credit for carrying so many new release / reissue LP's, regardless of genre. Although, I remember the new release section to be 20 Feet long, two boxes deep; today, it was maybe 12 feet. Picked up early Calexco vinyl, so I can't complain. Satelite - Skip it. Criminal Records - Mostly a CD shop, and not much of a Jazz selection in any format. All vinyl is new and fairly priced. Most is alt / dance / punk, only a handful of jazz titles. Wuxtry - Didn't have enough time... but I'll be back in a few weeks.
  19. Fair enough. I assumed this wasn't available in other formats. Is it available on CD? But yes, I prefer vinyl to CD, but buy a fair share of the 0's and 1's for new releases.
  20. Thanks Chuck. Guess I should have been more specific: What does this set usually go for? If it ebay's at $100, then I'll wait; if $250 or higher, then I'd pull the trigger. I have some of the cuts here and there, but would love to have it all in one place if $250 is fair / going rate.
  21. I have a chance to pick this up for $250. Is that a fair price for this box? I checked ebay Completed Auctions, but couldn't find anything.
  22. Looks like Borders is rolling out a rewards program in select markets. 10% discount when you register and you can acrue discount days along the way. www.bordersrewards.com for more info. Update: Picked up my card the store next door to my hotel, registered online, and just received a 30% coupon off one item.
  23. Lo-Fi rocks on my Blackberry. Strictly text version with the occaisional pic depending on how it's uploaded. ZERO features (no reply, messages, etc...). BUT when I'm in read only mode on the road (or meeting / conference call ) it absolutely flies. Could also be a quick "scan" mode for dial up users to avoid loading all of the graphics and formatting.
  24. Sweet pick up sidewinder. I don't regret picking this set up at all last winter. I revisit this set as often as any Mosaic, if not more. Enjoy!
