That's nothing... about 10 years ago a local shop bought a nice collection of 10" LP's. Vinyl was VG+ at the very worst. BUT, every jacket had a 1 x 2 inch rectangle cut out of the upper right hand corner. Apparently, the previous owner's shelves had a matching shelf support on the back of the cabinets. He wanted the LP's flush with the front of the shelving, so out came the scissors...

Revisited the Clifford Brown PJ / BN box. Only got through one side before the kids got up, but it's a start...

With the iPod connected, open iTunes and go to the Edit menu, select Preferences, click on the iPod tab. There will be a check box to enable / disable disk mode. Good luck, Tony

Light reading lately... all Xmas gifts. iPod Therefore I Am - Dylan Jones ... Another personal, music memoir. Quick, uneventful read. Guess I'll have to wait for Hornby to do his iPod playlist / memoir, although Songbook probably qualifies. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - Dave Eggers ... Note to Mr. Eggers: Edit, Edit, Edit. Seems more like an extreme exercise of style over content which is a shame since there are some poingant moments in this memoir. Low ... Another volume in Continuum's 33 1/3 series. I received a handful of these which I'm saving for light travel reading.

Why do you think the check mark bad? The check mark indicates that the synch has completed and the iPod can be disconnected on my 3Gen iPod. The disk mode can be disabled in iTunes.

Any info or opinions on the Hodges? Any bonus tracks on this one compared to the release reviewed on AMG? Is this material duplicated on the Definitie CD with similar name?

In that case, the next round of coupons will be 25% off one CD / Book from 1/12 - 1/15.

Absolutely. It was a requirement when we bought our current house and will be if / when we move again. I think I posted some pics last year in the Vinyl Frontier if you're interested. Just bought a pair of leather chairs and some new drawers for my IKEA shelf to which hold 144 CD's in suprisingly little space. Only regret is that it's directly below the nursery so I've mostly been using headphones the last 10 months. Lately, it's also doubled as my three year old's dinosaur playroom so I've been able to squeeze some airtime here and there.

Not sure. The advertisement was at the register today but I didn't read the fine print. I guess you'll find out? Only single discs, or does this work with multi-disc releases?? In other words, if I go in and buy two Cellar Door boxes, will I get a third one for free?? (Serious question --- Spontoonious and I need one, and I'm betting I can find a buddy or ours that needs one too.)

Starting 1/12/06, all Classical & Jazz CD's will be 3 for the price of 2 with the cheapest as the freebie. Only slightly better than a 30% coupon...

Sides 3 & 4 of Johnny Hodges 1951 - 55 Mosaic...

It was waiting for me when I got home from Chicago last night. Seller said he shipped it on 12/17, but the postage sticker was dated 12/27. Not ordering from that guy again... On the plus side, the box and LP's are in great shape and an excellent addition to my shelves. Geez, you'd think there would have been a little extra effort to get it there at least by Christmas. I have a 100.00 gift certificate and I'm pulled in three different ways: Mosaic sets I really want (e.g., Columbia Swing or Sonny Stitt), Mosaics I kind of want, but should get before they go OOP (Parlan, Roach, maybe Elvin), and then I like the idea of grabbing three Selects from among the many I want (Chambers, Reece, Amy, Brookmeyer, Hill, Shank/Cooper). Decisions, decisions.

Grab the coffee or magazine of your choice. Your receipt will include two 30% coupons: one for a book and the other for any CD or DVD. Both are good from 1/5 - 1/8.

I'm still waiting for The Complete Johnny Hodges 1951 - 1955 Sessions to arrive. Late November eBay purchase but crappy seller.

Have used Toshiba's in the past with much satisfaction, but haven't touched one in five+ years b/c no longer a standard platform with the companay. Today, I'm using a Thinkpad T42 as primary and a Dell C610 as the backup business laptop. Between the two, I prefer the IBM for daily use but Dell has the better service and support. With Levano's purchase of IBM, the support has tanked in the last 6 months or so. In terms of personal laptops, I'm currently using an Acer Ferrari 4000. Not sure I'd ever buy one for the asthetic, but it's a review unit that the magazine let me keep so I'm not complaining. There are essentially two types of laptops: notebooks (the true portables) and the desktop replacements (the heavy, gigantic laptops at 10+ lbs). You'll need to determine which you really need... at that point you've at least eliminated half the options... At that point, screen size will probably be the next limiting factor to meet most price points. Figure out what you need vs. want and go from there. RAM, HD, Video, Proc, etc... all add to the bottom line, but not like LCD real estate. Check out www.techdeals.net for coupons, discounts, and first dibs on limited techie sales. I tipped some buddies off to an unadvertised Dell coupon last summer for loaded Inspiron's for $500 or so. Good luck!

After 72 whirlwind hours spent with family (ours, hers, mine) and finding out that you can serve an affordable Christmas dinner buying everything at Trader Joe's, that roasting a few chickens is way easier than one turkey, and that your 9 month old daughter has a voracious appetite for dim sum (roast pork & green onion crepes, fried taro, soy sauce noodles, and assorted dumplings, sho mai (sp?), and steamed veggies), I grabbed the toolbox this morning and started putting all the kids gifts together. Play tunnels, easels, feeding batteries into every gadget known to kid-kind... Also had a chance to listen to some of my gifts (not all at once of course)... Monk / Coltrane - At Carnegie Hall (LP) Blakey - At The Jazz Corner of the World (2CD) Burrell - Introducing Kenny Burrell (2CD Conn) Dorham - 'Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia (2CD) McPartland - Piano Jazz with Bill Evans (CD) Navarro - With Tadd Dameron (CD) Rollins - A Night at the Village Vanguard (2CD) Paul Chambers - Mosaic Select Bennie Green - Mosaic Select Norman Granz - The Complete Jam Sessions Also had a chance to leaf through... Milt Hinton - Bass Line iPod Therefore I Am and a hand full of Continuum's 33 1/3 series books Damn... out of AA's already!!! Grrrrr....

Go with the Arcam, you won't regret it. Creek is good as well, but not to the Arcam level IMO. Arcam also allows simple upgrade paths in the future via board swaps at your dealer.

Not just the vintage pressings... I've regularly seen DMM's in the $15 - $20 range, 70's Blue Labels in the $25 range, and the Japanese releases approaching rarified air: Toshibas in the $40 - 50 range and Kings in the triple digits for rarer titles... usually Japanese only releases, but still! The Classic Records reissues look even more attractive on pricing alone. It's enough to shy away from BN's and start digging through other less "collectable" and more reasonably priced labels.

Ditto that... my iPod and Shure EC3's block almost all of the background plane noise. Try having a 10GB iPod with 60+GB of music! I've really had to learn to populate all of the property fields and take advantage of the free form comments field so that I can synch the iPod using smart playlists. Even if I upgrade to a newer model, I'd still use playlists. That might be an interesting thread... "post your latest smart playlist settings"

The Brown Box was gone as well, although they said they had another set coming in next week at the same price. I didn't understand how they could schedule that sort of thing, but had them reserve it for me. Asked them to hold the Desmond if / when they do find it as well. Live and learn... maybe I'll play the Mosaic Brown box to ease the pain.
