That's an understatement! They're sweet and the battery life for playing music is unreal. Plus, I can charge them via USB when traveling... an option Apple decided not to build into new firmware releases for my model

The Top Five of 2005: The Non-Jazz Edition
spinlps replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Paul Weller - As Is Now (Huge Jam, Weller, and even Style Council fan and Weller just seems to be getting better with age.) Laura Cantrell - Humming By The Flowered Vine (Actually, I discovered all of her work this year and am totally, completely enamoured!) Various Artists - For A Decade of Sin: 11 Years of Bloodshot Records (Bloodshot may very well be my favorite non-Jazz label over the last 5 years.) Belle & Sebastian - Push Barman to Open Old Wounds (Technically not a new release since it compiles all the previously release 12inch EP's, but a great rediscovery of the release I've had on vinyl all these years. Great orchestral Brit-pop.) New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (Not as strong as the first two releases IMO, but still the most fun band around and amazing live! ) -
Try running the latest version of iPod Updater. Make sure you have a back up though, since it complete wipes out your iPod. I'm afraid my 10GB 3rd Gen iPod is starting to go. I usually have to run the Updater every 2 - 3 weeks now. It works fine, but I have problems with the autosync to iTunes. Silver Lining = maybe I finally buy a new one! Have to see how much it costs to fix this one. One of my vendors sent me a 1GB shuffle as a Christmas gift this year. Didn't keep it though... raffled it off to someone in the office. Damn ethics...

Well... it worked in college. Of course, job, marriage, family, etc... have limited hangover opps. You have got to be kidding me!

FYI... the empire grows larger... -- CONCORD MUSIC GROUP ACQUIRES TELARC INTERNATIONAL & SUBSIDIARY LABEL HEADS UP Acquisition Strengthens Concord's Position as One Of The Industry's Preeminent Independent Labels The Concord Music Group today announced the acquisition of Telarc International Corporation. The Cleveland, Ohio-based Telarc has been a leader in classical and jazz recordings for over 25 years. Included in the transaction is Heads Up International, which became part of Telarc in 2000. Heads Up is known for its highly successful catalogue of contemporary instrumental and world music. Following the recent acquisition of Fantasy Records, this transaction further bolsters the Concord Music Group as one of the world's largest and most dynamic independent record companies. Founded in 1977 by musicians and former teachers Bob Woods and Jack Renner, Telarc has amassed 46 GRAMMY awards and a catalogue of more than 1,000 master recordings ranging from classical and classical-crossover to jazz and blues, from such legendary artists as Dave Brubeck, George Shearing, Ray Brown, Andre Previn, and Oscar Peterson. The current jazz roster includes celebrated singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli and vocalist Tierney Sutton. Telarc's extraordinary classical roster includes landmark recordings from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Cincinnati Symphony, and Cincinnati Pops Orchestras, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Artist-oriented and known throughout the industry for sonic innovation and super-high quality audio, Telarc became the first label to commercially use digital recording in 1978, and, in 1983, was one of the first to launch compact discs in a joint effort with Sony Corporation. In 2004, Telarc was named Label of the Year by Gramophone Magazine in the UK. Heads Up International's roster, headed by founder and label president Dave Love, includes internationally respected artists such as Spyro Gyra, Najee, Michael Brecker, The Yellowjackets, and highly acclaimed world music artists Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Hugh Masekela. Both Telarc and Heads Up have a significant number of recordings in high definition and Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) format, based on the superior Direct Stream Digital recording technology. "The cultures of our companies are very similar and we see lots of synergies through the merging of our talented staffs and our mutual goals," says Telarc president Bob Woods. "Glen Barros and I have known each other for some time and I respect the creative indie mentality our companies share, which allows us to respond quickly to the constant change and abundant opportunities in our industry. We'll be a larger entity, but we won't move slowly. "Besides," Woods added, "Telarc and Heads Up are certain that they will kick Concord's butt in the company softball game." Glen Barros, president and CEO of the Concord Music Group, said, "We are incredibly proud to welcome Telarc and Heads Up to the Concord family, as we truly admire these great labels. Telarc's history of impeccable audio and musical standards has made it one of the world's most respected independent labels and we are honored to be the ones chosen to safeguard this rich legacy. As with all great record companies, Telarc and Heads Up are built on a solid foundation of great artists and great people. We truly look forward to working alongside Bob Woods, Dave Love, and their talented team and know that they will make a great contribution toward the achievement of our mutual goals." Added Barros, "The only thing I'm worried about is how Bob is going to take the news when he finds out that there is no company softball game." The Concord Music Group is one of the world's largest independent record and music publishing companies, committed to offering innovative, high quality popular music. Concord Music Group's family of labels includes Peak, Playboy Jazz, Stretch, Concord Picante, and Fantasy Records, which is home to such historic imprints as Milestone, Pablo, Prestige/New Jazz, Riverside/Jazz Land, Stax/Volt/Enterprise, Specialty, Takoma and many more. The combined catalog features over 3,000 albums from such legendary artists as Charlie Byrd, Rosemary Clooney, Herb Ellis, Stan Getz, Mel Torme, John Lee Hooker, Little Richard, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Ella Fitzgerald, Isaac Hayes, Albert King, Thelonius Monk, Joe Pass, Art Pepper, Otis Redding, Vince Guaraldi, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughn, Sam Cooke, Count Basie and Creedence Clearwater Revival, just to name a few. In 2004, Concord Records, in association with Starbucks Hear Music, released Ray Charles' final recording, Genius Loves Company, winner of 8 GRAMMY Awards including Album of the Year. The label's current roster includes GRAMMY Award-winning artists Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Sergio Mendes, Ozomatli, Eddie Palmieri, and Poncho Sanchez, among many others. Peak Records, a joint venture with Concord, is an industry leader in smooth jazz and R&B and features a stellar artist roster including The Rippingtons, Gerald Albright, David Benoit, LaToya London, and Lee Ritenour. Concord's acquisition of Fantasy late last year paved the way for the re-signing of rock icon John Fogerty after years of estrangement from Fantasy. As founder and songwriter of the legendary band Creedence Clearwater Revival, and throughout a stellar solo career, Fogerty has written some of rock music's most enduring classics such as "Bad Moon Risin'," "Proud Mary," and "Fortunate Son." The Long Road Home, the ultimate Fogerty/Creedence collection, was released on November 1st, 2005. Concord Music Group is owned by Act III Communications and Tailwind Capital. HSBC Bank USA, N.A. and JPMorgan Chase provided debt financing for this transaction.

Misty The only version I can tolerate lately is Dianne Reeves' version... and only b/c it's makes a brief appearance in her version of The Nearness of You.

Tylenol with Coke / Pepsi chaser before bed. Otherwise, it's plenty of fluids and a multivitamin the next day. A nice vigorous game of basketball does the trick as well... if you don't sweat it off, it'll end up coming out of one end or the other.

Andre Previn - Plays Vernon Duke (Orig. Contemporary Mono) Ralph Sutton - Piano Solos In The Classic Jazz Tradition (Orig. Riverside Mono) Really enjoying the Previn sides. The Sutton usually isn't something I'd like, but he sure can sell it!

I actually work in Missouri. I guess I could put it on the corp AMEX so the bill and ship to's are MO addresses. Don't really like to put personal items on that account though. 9% is high, but I figure I have to pay it when I shop in store anyway. At least the $$$ are staying in state... -

Far from a complete list, but here goes St. Louis... Busch's Grove - http://www.buschsgrove.com Newly remodeled and reopened. The Jazz Bistro - http://www.jazzatthebistro.com Mostly national acts. Cicero's - http://www.mbus.com/clubs/genadm/Cicero's.htm - This used to be a nice, down and dirty joint but they moved across the street and remodeled. Still a fun place and decent pizza. Main Street Jazz & Blues - Across the river in IL. 3 blocks from my house! 307 E. Main St., Belleville, IL 618-235-6025 Neruda Restaurant & Bar - http://www.neruda2dine.com/ Great food! Tons of college bars in the Delmar Loop and near SLU Campus as well. Here's the local jazz station as well: http://www.siue.edu/WSIE/ Good luck! Edit: Cookies Jazz in Webster Groves. Just around the corner from Webster Records and less than a mile from Euclid. How about an in-store? :-) -
Thanks for the tip brownie. Just ordered my copy from Dusty Groove last night. They're asking $16.99 if anyone is interested.

I need to repent... first month in years where CD purchases have exceeded LP's. Today's used CD lunch haul: Richard Holmes & Gene Ammons - Groovin' with Jug (just noticed it's Grovin' on the spine) Dexter Gordon - Dexter Rides Again Curtis Fuller - Bluesette Nat Adderley - That's Nat Played the Holmes & Ammons on the drive back to work... the more I buy, the more I realize how much I've been missing! Great, great stuff.

Picked these up today at an atypical St. Louis outlet... all minty fresh mono's for a song. Shelly Manne - My Fair Lady - Contemporary (M 3527, not the usual C listed in the guides) Shelly Manne - Bells Are Ringing - Contemporary (C 3559) Andre Previn - Pal Joey - Contemporary (C 3543) Andre Previn - Jazz King Size - Contemporary (M 3570) Love the cover art on this one... judging from his roars, my three year old likes it too. For some reason, I've given the Manne / Previn release short thrift. But after tonight's extended exposure I'll have to keep an eye out for this duo. Any recs? I left Previn's Vernon Duke, Gigi and Kern in the racks, as well as Manne's West Coast Sound, Li'l Abner, and Peter Gunn among others (all mono's if I remember right). If I had known I'd enjoy these this much I would have grabbed them all!

Thanks for the info Mike. That's the identical track listing as KD and His Progressive Piano. I wonder which is the original? iTunes lists Eugene Wright on Bass and either Charles Wright or Lawrence Marble on Drums. Actually, now that I study both releases on iTunes, six of the tracks overlap with Ideation... no personnel listing though :-( . Anyone know if the Progressive Piano & Modernity are essentially the same release? And if the overlapping tracks are identical recordings?
-
I'm trying to round out my Kenny Drew but have had a helluva time finding some of his Verve output. In particular, I'd like to know if the Ideation of Kenny Drew or Kenny Drew and His Progressive Piano has been reissued domestically (USA) on CD. I've seen Japanese reissues but have been reluctant to pay the high dollar for them... or for the vinyl. Verve has them listed as Vault items which are now exclusively available on iTunes. I'm assuming that precludes any future reissues I'll DL if I have to, but prefer to have something more tangible. Thanks!

Best way to remove adhesive from that horrid

I use Goo Gone... works for the cd strips and removing gunk off of LP jackets. -
A little late on this one, but here's a vote for the SR-60's. They've served me well over the last 9 years... only "upgrade" I made was to the XL ear pads. While they've been replaced with Shure E3's on the road, they're still a sweet match with my Rega headphone amp in the big rig.

Has anyone actually received their order yet? Amazon.fr sent me an email stating that it was not currently available but may ship in another six weeks... translated: not going to happen.

Here's the link... you'll probably have to present a Borders Rewards card or apply for one on the spot (its free). Borders Rewards Coupon Good luck!

It's a 30% coupon for Borders Rewards members. I'd post the link, but I haven't figured out how on a Blackberry.

lol... actually, you just answered it. Complicated Rhythms sounded familiar, but I just couldn't place it. Thanks!
