  1. Morning Song makes my Desert Island list... I picked up the Ballad Artistry of DM w/ George Arvanatis (sp?... too lazy to check) earlier this month and have played it a ton. I prefer the smaller group (although I'm considering an Octet small in his case) recordings to the larger Orchestra sides for the most part.
  2. Just picked all three up at B & N. Borders, for some reason, only stocks the Ellis so I special ordered these last Thursday. Extremely quick service BTW... the CD's were at the store on Friday afternoon. So what's been released under the Verve Originals line in Europe? I also prefered the look of the original Verve Elites and Verve Master Edition cardboard gatefold thingies. I liked the look / feel of the matte cardboard finish more than the higher gloss reprints lately. I don't recall seeing the LP Sleeve LPR's around here, although I've picked up several used this month.
  3. Mostly jazz here... all prices ppd in the US via media mail. Prefer paypal, but will accept check / money order but will have to delay shipping until checks clear. PM with any questions. 4. I haven't hand any problems with Used CD in store purchases at Tower. Granted, I've only visited three shops, but do so fairly regularly in my travels.
  5. Yikes. February is shaping up to be a very, very expensive month!
  6. Saw those along with the Raney / Brookmeyer listed on DG's site today. What sort of packaging did they use on these? The digipacks, foldout Verve Elite / Master package, standard CD, etc...? Not familiar with any of the releases, but have been on a Verve kick lately. Maybe I'll swing by Borders on the way home to see if they've hit the shelves yet. Thanks for the heads up!
  7. KWMU 90.7 is the local NPR affiliate - KWMU KDHX 88.1 is the local independent station - KDHX WSIE 88.7 is the all Jazz station - WSIE
  8. Not sure if this is the right place for this, but this popped up on a different board this morning. 15% coupon at sonymusicstore.com Enter WINTER in the coupon area when checking out.
  9. I wonder if this means that Classic will return to their Verve reissue program of the early 90's or perhaps begin an Impulse reissue series. Speakers Corners seemed to take over the Verve LP reissues, particularly the Fitzgerald, Getz, and, to a lesser extent, Webster releases. They defintely raised the bar and presented, IMO, an excellent product... the Ella Gershwin Box is outstanding in sound, pressing quality and packaging. SC's Impulse reissues were also outstanding and far better than Universal's mid-90's offerings. Absolutely no contest for the three titles I picked up: Coltrane / Hartman, Body and Soul, and Ballads. Classic has a love / hate relationship with the audiophile community. I'm just grateful they're taking the time and apparent care in reissuing the BN catalog; better quality than the cheap, Scorpio pressings and the last BN vinyl source since Mosaic has exited that market. Let's hope the start to mine the Verve Vault and release some choice titles. Wouldn't that be ironic? Available via iTunes or on 200g virgin vinyl...
  10. Piano Interpretation by Bud Powell on Verve
  11. Yes, I think we're mixing practices in question #3. In regards to currently copyrighted material: In my mind, Home Copying = making private backup copies for the owner's personal use (backup CD, car CD, MP3, etc...) Peer to Peer = Making copies for other's use... or making them available. The question has emphasis on today's technology of P2P Networking, but manually making copies of CD's for others seems to be a distinction only in degree... the snail mail version of P2P file sharing networks.
  12. Classic is also reissuing Coltrane's One Down, One Up on a double LP. They also released two new jazz releases on their internal Straight Ahead imprint on LP.
  13. Thanks guys. They're on THE LIST.
  14. Interesting... I saw a number of VSOP CD's of Tampa material last week. Any recommendations on where to start with this label?
  15. It was one of those rare days today when some want list titles finally showed up at reasonable prices. Been searching for these three for a long time but haven't been willing to pay the high import or Amazon "collector" prices. Ended up finding them sealed today. Both Japanese CD Reissues: Verve Elite (The Swinger / Mr. Swing twofer) Not familiar with these: The Three Sounds - Babe's Blues The Three Sounds - Black Orchid Randy Weston - Monterey '66 And took some fliers on cheap Fresh Sounds material: Bill Perkins - Perk Plays Pres George Arvanitas - The Ballad Artistry of David Murray The Birdlanders featuring J.J. Johnson & Al Cohn All for under a C-note...woohoo. Of course, this just means that the bins will be completely dry in Atlanta next week.
  16. They're not usually like that here either... but amazingly I found two of the iTunes titles and an Elite I've been searching for today at Euclid. All sealed, all reasonablely priced. Kenny Drew and His Progressive Piano (Jap CD) Bud Powell - Blues in the Closet (Jap CD) Harry Edison - The Swinger / Mr. Swing (Elite)
  17. Perhaps its due to the ongoing feud / legal action between SST and the band? Bob Mould discusses the situation in detail in the latest issue of the Big Takeover magazine. Essentially, the label hasn't been paying royalties to the band in years and continues to rerelease and repackage the band's work.

    Disc storage

I think the closes approximation to Peter's request would be a small form factor PC with a sound card providing audio outputs. You'll still need KB, mouse, monitor though. Another option is to stream the music from your PC to your stereo wirelessly. You'll need a wireless card for the PC and one of the many wireless media components for the stereo. Most of these components have small LCD screens which allow browsing through your media library. Last, switch to a laptop with the aforementioned portable USB drives. As long as the laptop has audio outputs, you should be able to hook it up to your stereo. And if you're going the external USB drive route, it should be fairly affordable if you DYI. External hard drive cases run in the $20 - $40 range and high capacity 3.5" drives are steadily decreasing in price. The one touch backup feature is nice on the pre-built models, but nothing you can't schedule in Windows or I assume the Mac.
  19. I don't blame you one bit and on a few titles, the Kenny Drew's in particular, I'm getting close to pulling the trigger. I'm more willing to DL stuff from emusic w/o the notes & packaging, but it's 1/6 of the cost, usually ripped at a higher bitrate, and doesn't come with all the DRM limitations. I travel a fair bit and get a chance to look in different cities and over time, stuff turns up. And yes, some of it is pricey and I pass. I also ask the guys at Euclid to look out for certain titles and hold them for me. Example: Just came across the Verve Elite Lee Konitz 3CD set sealed for $18 over lunch. I was rationalizing why it might be worth $40 used (not to mention $80 sealed!) on Amazon and it falls into my lap the next day for half that.
  20. Cool, LET IT BE is one of the titles I received. The Smiths MEAT IS MURDER is written by Joe Pernice. He doesn't write about the album as much as he details his teen years when that album was released. Great approach... and is there nothing that guy can't do?
  21. I've been tempted to grab some of the Verve Vault items but never go through with it. There's something about having the cover art, liner notes, etc... be it CD or LP. And at $10 per album for the most part, I'd rather pay the extra dough and wait for it to show up in the used or import bins.
  22. Suffered similar issues using wireless speakers for outdoor parties. Guests enjoyed music until the neighbor's teenager fired up the cordless phone. Has anyone tried the newer BlueTooth wireless headphones? Smaller range than old tech wireless, but perhaps cleaner?
  23. I'm usually in the 75,000 mile / year range and, like BeBop, don't have too many horror stories. Some that come to mind: - Flying home from Cincy in a snow storm. STL is notorious for delays b/c the two original runways are too close together and one is usually closed in limited visibility. So we're delayed to begin with, we get to STL but the runways are icy so we circle for over an hour before the pilot informs us that they've just closed the airport and that he would be taking us to Chicago to spend the night (it was the last flight out of Cincy). - Rocky flight from DFW to STL seated next to a fairly large female. She doesn't look well and falls asleep during the flight. We hit some turbulence in midflight and in her sleep grabs my arm and politily vommits on it. Luckily, it was winter and I had a waterproof jacket... ... and then there are the turbo-prop flights, all of which can be an adventure even in the best of weather.
  24. I know it's early but any idea on battery life and charge time? No problems with battery life yet on my 3 year old unit, but wouldn't mind an extra few hours.
  25. Yikes! Never heard of that one before. Just be glad he remembered to take the LP's out when using the three hole punch....
