For the non-jazz crowd, REM have a free CD available on their site ( http://www.remhq.com ) which has remixed versions of songs from the Reveal album. Besides music, I've downloaded interviews or special radio programming and copied them to my ipod for later listening.

Webster Records is about 6 blocks from the new Euclid location. I've always thought of it as a Classical shop, but they do have a good selection of smaller label jazz that Joe doesn't carry. If you're looking for used Classical CD's, this is the place to go. I'd say it's worth the walk (drive if you have a good haul) from Euclid.

There is no cure... #2 is due March 5 and I'm trying to slow things down. I'm trying a zero sum solution of one has to go before something else takes it's place on the shelves. So far I'm at +20 or so ... that's after boxing up 2 Uhaul boxes of CD's for trade and another two boxes of LP's to sell! Unfortuneately, something happened this week that will DEFINITELY slow me down. Baby #1 (2 years old) suffered a spiral fracture of his left tibia and is now in a full leg cast. Our current car seats have a protective bar that lowers across the waist which the cast now obstructs. My wife asked me to check out some new car seats and I realized I could have bought 2 car seats for what I've spent on music the since September

Yeah, I hear ya... no Nak here, just a Sony ES series deck. As I mentioned before, I use the Maudio 2496 card with my hifi with great success to record LP's, never really tried the tape route though. Thought it might be of interest to the non-speciality or on-board sound card crowd.

Saw this in a PC mag at work yesterday... http://www.plusdeck.com Check out the Plusdeck2. They claim to be able to play from and record to analog tapes (no metal tapes though?!?) directly through your PC. Sounds interesting... I've been looking for a way to transfer all those live tapes from the trading days!

I saw that Stereophile had reviewed a PCMCIA / PC Card sound card in the last issue or two. I recall the review to be favorable. It might be more convenient than a firewire/usb box since you do away with wires, etc...

Well, that solution is less than ideal since you're not dealing with Line In / Out's and instead dealing with variable inputs / outputs. Does your soundcard have a line in? If so, I'd say headphone jack into line in is better than into mic input. Does your stereo have a tape loop? If so, you *might* be able to use the Tape In/Out to connect your PC. Your PC sound card would, in effect, simply fuction as a tape deck provided you use the Line In and Line Out on your soundcard. If your soundcard doesn't have Line - In or Line Outs, then I'd suggest getting a different internal soundcard with both of those features OR perhaps an external sound card that uses the USB functionality of your PC. Lots to choose from in both camps at all price points.

I will probably regret this, but since I'm a local, here goes... Euclid and Vintage Vinyl have already been mentioned. I frequent both. Neither is a Jazz only shop, but Euclid is the better of the two in that regard. Excellent selection on the LP side, and usually carries most of the imports listed at Dusty Groove. Hint, the used CD's are housed in the back with the LP's, new CD's are up front. I will say that as far as LP's go, Euclid prices have gone up since the move to the new location. Vintage can yield some great bargains as they don't necessarily focus on the Jazz LP stock. Vintage does get some sealed OOP CD's that Euclid does not (BN Conn's for example). Vintage also has a smaller location in Illinois if you're that way. Other shops to consider: Record Exchange - On Hampton in a resurrected public library. The place is HUGE and specializes in 70's type rock, but can yield the jazz find on occaision. CD Reunion - Locations in North County and St. Charles. Carries the Proper Boxes at a heavy discount. Jazz selection is on the small side, but the North County location usually has a good number of jazz box sets at very attractive prices. Borders - Tons around town, but the Brentwood location has a great selection. The buyer usually keeps a fair number of imports on the shelves. Pricey, but not too bad with the internet coupons. Streetside Records - Half the local shops closed in the past few years, but one is down the street from Vintage and is worth a stop for the dedicated Classical room. There are other smaller shops and book stores with CD / LP sections, but I've got to keep something to myself!

One more advantage of the PC->Stereo connection is ripping DVD audio. Sure, I can listen to DVD's like a normal DVD player, but I can rip the DVD audio to disk, CD, iPod etc...

I've had excellent results with the Audiophile 2496. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audi...e2496-main.html It has standard RCA IN / OUT jacks and produces excellent sound through my "quiet" audio PC. I can record LP's to hard disk, edit, mix, etc... then onto CD or iPod for travels. Highly recommended!

Anyone remember the show Felicity a few years back? Not only did they play Ben Webster, it was on LP. Discussion centered on Jazz and the "preferred" medium. Scene was a college dorm room, turntable, jazz LP's on the bed (mostly popular titles), and Ben coming through the speakers to fade...

It's a nice to have, not a need. I tried the forums on the BB and it's doable. 3 - 4 people aren't exactly critical mass at this point. Spend the $$$ on the new server / hosting instead!

Am familiar with most of the reissue labels but not with Pure Pleasure Records. Any feedback on these pressings? On par with Classic's mono BN's or Speakers Corner Verve & Impulse reissues or more in line with the Rhino / Scorpio Columbia, Atlantic, BN, etc...?
