The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 Yes - I know he did the arrangements for an album by Syl Johnson. MG Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 21, 2006 Author Report Posted July 21, 2006 I heard Brad Mehldau cover Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" a week ago in Rotterdam. Lea DeLaria did a good vocal cover of this on DOUBLE STANDARDS a year or two back. Quote
Johnny E Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I've always wanted Reptet to do a version of the Beatles Savoy Truffle. I also think Lather by the Jefferson Airplane would make a nice ballad - nose solo remains played by a nose of course...maybe the trombone players'? And the Pixies Wave of Multilation would make a great thumper. Quote
BruceH Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I recently heard Stanley Turrentine do a nice version of "Can't Buy Me Love." I'd like to hear "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More" as done by, oh, Booker Ervin. And Fagin's "I.G.Y" done by Sonny Rollins. And "King of America" done by Benny Golson. Obviously, one could keep this up forever, but that's enough for now. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 bullshit sonny didnt cover IGY- r u joking man? but seriously my friend joe played a sweet cover of that macy gray single on the A100 last time i saw him Quote
BruceH Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 Talking Heads: Pulled Up, transformed into some edgy bop would be very cool. Nice one. Quote
BruceH Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 bullshit sonny didnt cover IGY- r u joking man? I'd like to hear it. Take time to read the title of the thread. Quote
Kalo Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 bullshit sonny didnt cover IGY- r u joking man? I'd like to hear it. Take time to read the title of the thread. Man's a FUNKATEER! Dig what he say. I'd love to hear Bud Shank's version of Fountains of Wayne's "It Must Be Summer." How about Outkast's "Bombs over Baghdad" as interpreted by Sonny Rollins? Quote
Kalo Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 Wayne Shorter playing Outkast's "Ms. Jackson." Quote
Kalo Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 Dave Douglas plays the Elvis Costello Songbook. Quote
Kalo Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 Fred Hersch plays Joni Mitchell. (I heard him play her "My Old Man" and it was the highlight of the set. He acknowledges her as a gateway to becoming a jazz player.) Quote
BruceH Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 If Bud Shank could do soundtracks to surf movies so well, then yeah, "It Must Be Summer" seems like a natural. (Though I'd personally like to hear Art Pepper do it. If you could somehow reincarnate Art Pepper.) Quote
ep1str0phy Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 And "King of America" done by Benny Golson. That's an astonishingly good call that hadn't even crossed my mind. Costello's all over this thread--a master of melody, even at his less complex; there's a treasure-trove of material to be had there. -Lonnie Smith did the Beck songbook not too long ago, right? There's some excellent material in the B-sides(e.g., 'Totally Confused,' 'Brother') that a talented improviser could make hay with. -And Jack Bruce's back catalogue--all of it. Quote
