I'm not going to have time--at work just about every day--but I'm kind of in the mood for an Irwin-Allen-type disaster flick w/an environmental twist and will probably try to catch it next week.

Of course, I had a similar desire back in 1996 and ended up seeing INDEPENDENCE DAY w/my father-in-law--my gawd, what an awful movie! ^_^

I HATE this director, he ranks right up there with Michael Bay as my vote for WORST director currently making films. Even though I'm a fan of special effects blockbusters..and I also like Dennis Quaid usually...I'm going to avoid this one like the plague...

What do you have against plagues, anyway?

Oh I dislike Bay far more than Emmerich. I could name quite a handful of high-profile directors whom I dislike more, in fact. Still, Roland will never win any awards...

All that aside, though perhaps due to very low expectations, I gotta say that DAT wasn't all that bad. It's hardly boring (which is the worst a film can be imo) and it's actually fairly entertaining - even in its occassional godawful stupidity. Indeed, while Emmerich isn't a great director, he's a fine enough craftsman that the film is put together with enough skill and polish that the fanciful "weather disaster" scenario is actually carried out with some conviction. Leave your mind at the door and this might just entertain you...

My kids REEEEEALLY want to see this flick...so we will, sooner or later. But it looks so bad. Independence Day was one of the dumbest movies of all time, and this looks like more of the same. Did anyone hear the review on NPR? Oh, mama! The critic at the Wall St. Jnl. loathed it too, predictably.

I really dug the movie a lot. Some parts were weighed down by cheese but mostly it was a nice action adventure flick with no one fighting, getting stabbed, or shot. It was about folks pulling together in adversity, the importance of family, and an amusing dig at US policies toward illegal Mexican immigrants. The Veep looked suspiciously like Cheney but not nearly a big enough asshole. The special effects were reasonably good but not knock out. Oh yeah, and a nice slam on current government policies on global warming. (What melting ice caps?)

I wanted something escapist and entertaining and this filled the bill nicely. Also, I'm a big fan of Dennis Quaid and it was fun to see him in something a little different. He was terrific as always. The young actor who played his son was also very good.

It had a nice beat, you could dance to it, I'd give it a 7.

So there.

According to A.O. Scott's NY Times review, in one scene a tornado wipes out the Capitol Records building... :o^_^

In the LA tornado scene if you look very closely you can see a copy of Miles Davis' - Birth of the Cool flying around in the debris. Then it cuts back to NYC where the temperatures are cooling off.... ;)

Not really, but it would've been funny.

The whole family saw it yesterday. The vice-president was most assuredly a Cheney clone, which was pretty funny. This made for the most hilarious and unbelievable part of the film, when near the end the Cheney clone ADMITS HE WAS WRONG!

One of my kids noted that the president in the movie was too smart to be realistic. ( ) Dennis Quaid's kid was pretty good, played by the new Tobey Maquire (Jake Gyllenhaal).
