I received this from Atavistic a couple of weeks ago . There's not a lot of love for Mr Vandermark on these boards , but if you enjoyed 'Airports for Light' I'm sure you'll enjoy this one - no new ground is broken but the CD is filled with good (solid) tunes.

I have taken some notes on this but will need a couple of more spins to reach a sound conclusion. Suffice it to say, at this point, that it won't convert anyone - neither is it likely to disappoint fans. Don't be fooled by the title, though, no surprises here - style related or not, unless V5 has been the only near-avant-jazz you've been listening. Some more and longer unaccompanied solo or duo sections in some tunes that've been better incorporated into the structure, but that's about it. I like the ballad - as a tune; listened to them play it live twice and now on the album, still sounds very nice.

One more thing, someone should remind Mr. Vandermark to perhaps reconsider taking solos on up-tempo swing-feel tunes - some of them sound kind of embarrasing, not everyone can do everything. Bishop does a much more satisfying job in duo/unaccompanied solo sections than he does with his solos on tunes - they sound a bit too homogenous across the different tunes to my ears.

edit: It doesn't come across here, I guess, but I really enjoy most of his projects.

To anyone that has it, how are the versions of the Kirk tunes on the bonus disc?

Fine, but not better. I found the blowing to be markedly less inspired than that on "Six for Rollins," if that helps. Only a couple really get going. The medleys work well. Might be of interest, though, as the first track, has the most un-eventful and near dull Kessler solo I've ever heard.

Although they've been flagged up in other threads,KV fans with deep pockets(real or imaginary)won't be disappointed with new studio sets from Tripleplay and FME,Gambit and Underground respectively.I make it 5 new KV releases in the last month or so with the Freefall set and the Atomic/School Days double.Reminds me of the days when David Murray(another similarly "controversial" player)used to lay siege to my bank account with all those DIW's coming out in batches of 3.

Green Dolphin - would you say those two recent albums by the two trio are markedly better than their initial efforts? I like him but found the initial efforts to be hit and miss, and (same thing) quite inconsistent - on the whole, I was disappointed by both. So I'm a bit hesitant to go for those. I'm yet to be floored by "Furnace," either.

"Nuclear Assembly Hall" on the other hand is quite good and lots of fun to listen to (though, as you might guess, Vandermark plays as a member of one of the bands and is not a leader and therefore doesn't get more space than others, in fact, if anything, he gets less solo space).

edit: To clarify, Furnace is no clunker, just not outstanding, in my opinion. A fine, good enough, disc that I spin not infrequently.

I quite like the Freefall: Furnace set . It's a fairly subdued set , good if you're in the mood for free but subtle playing. Wiik is an amazing pianist. He's playing at the Edinburgh Jazz festival in july and I'll be sure to catch him.

Have only played them through the once so far...but early indications would say yes, both bands have "grown" since their last releases. It's been 4 years since the first Tripleplay set so they've all come on a bit since then. The FME's a studio set,4 episodic pieces and more focussed than the live debut.Having PNL behind the kit makes this my preferred trio, always throwing up surprises.Best thing is try and sample some tracks before taking the plunge.

Must say I enjoyed Furnace, but then I love that Giuffre 3 soundworld, hope they get together again sometime.

I don't know (yet) the last V5 (all together his best band with the DKV IMO.)

But I found FURNACE from FREE FALL, a very good and intelligent effort to recreate the feeling of the best JIMMY GIUFFRE Trio. Not on the same level, of course, but good enough (and VANDERMARK is a fine clarinet player.)

The one who is much a disappointment is GAMBIT with TRIPLE PLAY. Uninspired play and muddy sound all over.

There's been this one recently as well, I've picked up this the KV5 & the Freefall set & they certainly are a mixed bag .

I don't think I would have bough the ZU/Spaceways Inc Cd if I had heard it first its not what I normally look for. My initial thought of the first 4 tracks were is this KV with a heavy rock band ??

But I've had it on continually in the car for the past few days & find myself turning up the volume more & more with each track.

Forgot this one...that makes 6!Hadn't come across ZU before this, and was initially disappointed at not seeing more tracks by the Spaceways trio only, but yes play loud! The tracks with the double trio did leave me wishing for a few more tracks, but hell it's nice to have a shortish CD these days. Would be interesting to hear them without KV-anybody done so?
