The home-page is up, as well as all links save for the archived programs (hopefully by the end of today):

NightLights

The link to Jazz Internet resources features this forum prominently at the top. Mike Fitzgerald and Alan Lankin's sites are mentioned as well:

JazzInternetResources

We'll be tweaking the site in the days & weeks to come... adding cover shots of the recommended books, replacing the link addresses w/titles, etc. Please feel free to post feedback & comments here or to e-mail me at the address given in the contact info.

Next week: "Four Women: The Philips Recordings of Nina Simone."

Coming soon: shows on THE CONNECTION, the early recordings of Charles Mingus, and the Herbie Nichols Project, including an interview with pianist, co-leader, and Organissimo poster Frank Kimbrough.

Not yet added: Joe Milazzo's article on Ran Blake and Mike's book about Gryce. Should have those tacked on next week. Suggestions for further website/book additions are welcome.

I just realized that the Parker show is already up for listening, under the "Current audio" tab... guess I'd better post the playlist, huh?

Thanks for the feedback, folks. We'll be adding pics of the book covers to the "Book Nook" link & doing some other things to give the site more visuals--a bit text-heavy right now, I think. The webmaster's wife is due to give birth any day now, so it may be a week or two--same w/the archived programs, which are on the server but not yet linked to my page. If you know of any particularly good Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Kansas City or other midwestern jazz sites, let me know & I'll add them.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the program (musically and narration-wise). I'm gonna have to pick up that BOSTON 1952 disc from Chuck sometime.

Hey, thanks, Pryan! It's weird to have it posted on the site before it's even been broadcast, but I'm glad folks don't have to be up late to hear it now. The BOSTON 1952 disc is awesome, esp. the first half w/the Twardzik/Haynes/Gordon/Mingus line-up. The booklet is pretty amazing as well.

Cool site David!

Lots of good information and the show gets better each time I'm able to listen in online.

How about bulleting out the books list like this:

  • Donald Clarke: WISHING ON THE MOON.
Clarke's book about Billie Holiday draws heavily upon more than a hundred interviews done by Linda Kuehl in the early 1970s with musical colleagues and friends of Holiday.

  • Linda Dahl: STORMY WEATHER.
Twenty years after its publication it remains the primary history of women in jazz.

Note: Musical in the Clarke list item is misspelled on the online site

I am also glad the show is archived, since I’m not always able to catch it each Saturday night.

Alejo, thanks for the comments & suggestions--I think that would make the "Book Nook" list more readable, and we could probably wrap the text around a small picture of the dust-jacket.

Mike, I've thought about that, as I'd like to do something on Gryce for the new program. I might edit what we did down to a 2-part, 2-hours-total special (total time for the original broadcasts was about 150-160 minutes after subtracting news, underwrites, etc.). I'm planning the January-April programs right now & will probably throw that into the mix--most likely March.
