Matthew Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Don't want to open a can of worms, but I would think they would wait to see if DVD-A become the next "new thing" or not. Heck even Sony isn't releasing SACD's right now and they're the ones who were making the big push regarding this format. Quote
robviti Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 (edited) so, how much more would you be willing to pay per disc for a hybrid box? Edited September 2, 2004 by jazzshrink Quote
Claude Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 (edited) Blue Note stopped releasing SACDs because they thought mastering costs were too high. There is a post on the AAJ board where Kevin Bresnahan gives some information on that. I would think the cost factor would be much more important for limited edition reissues. Many Mosaic collectors would complain if the hybrid sets cost $5/disc more than the old CD sets. On the other hand, Fantasy and a couple of small classical labels are doing SACDs, so the cost is not prohibitive even for smalleditions. Maybe Blue Note didn't check all the possibilities. With Ron McMaster's rather so-so remasterings (my opinion of the recent Selects) it wouldn't make a big difference in sound anyway. The biggest improvement would be a remastering of the old material in surround sound Edited September 2, 2004 by Claude Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 I've been trying to get Mosaic to do this for about 2 years. As mentioned in this thread, it is very expensive to remaster and manufacture hybrid SACDs. However, Sony was offering some financial support which is how we got the Blue Note discs. Supposedly, Sony was still talking with Blue Note/Mosaic and something may happen. I do believe there has been a bit of a "wait & see" attitude at Mosaic with regards to SACD and DVD-Audio. However, in recent conversations with them, I got the feeling that they are leaning toward SACD. Of course, it might be because Sony may give them the chance to do so at minimal financial risk. J.A.W. Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 If Mosaic would indeed go ahead with the (hybrid) SACD option, I'd really hope they'd let Malcolm Addey or people like Doug Sax or Steve Hoffman do the remastering; I agree with Claude that Ron McMaster's Select remasters were not the best, euphemistically speaking...
