jazzmessenger Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Did anyone here see the Ron Blake quartet (at times quintet) at the Detroit Jazz Festival??? In my opinion, this group was one of the best at this year's festival. I thought the Louis Hayes quintet, James Carter quintet and Jon Faddis quartet gave a very strong performance, too. Anyway, I am tyring to remember the first tune Ron Blake played. I remember the melody. I have heard that song before, but can't remember the name. Can anyone help? Quote
Joe G Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 I wish I could have been there! We had a gig, though. Glad to hear they were burning. Quote
Joe G Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Just a guess, but was the tune Sara's Dance, by Tommy Turrentine? Quote
jazzmessenger Posted September 9, 2004 Author Report Posted September 9, 2004 Oh yeah, it was one smokin' show. I wish you could have made it to the show. Joey DeFrancesco almost stole the show. He is just an exciting and fun player to watch and listen. Anyway, I think most tunes were from his Mac Avenue CD. The song I really liked sounded like Dexter Gordon's Cheesecake. It may have been the one. Does he play that tune often? I thought you might know. Didn't you tour with him before? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 I will email him and ask. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 From the man himself: hey jim- what's up. good to see randy the other day. we had fun in detroit the other night. i think, if you're talking about the 1st tune on monday's set, it was voyage(kenny barron). sunday was sara's dance(tommy turrentine). hope eveything's going good. ron. bertrand Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 'Sara's Dance' is a great composition. Tommy Turrentine's compositional skills are never trumpeted enough (no pun intended). Bertrand. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 I agree. Joe and I have been doing that tune a long time. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 And I'll put in a good word for Kenny Barron's "Voyage" - recorded by Stan Getz, Benny Golson and many others. Mike Quote
