mikeweil
The two Verve LPs by Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery were recorded at three sessions - can someone please proofread - especially the master numbers? Is it known which take of O.G.D. was recorded first? Thanks! (I prefer to listen to these in recording order and would like to make sure before burning.) brownie
Mike, the Clef/Verve Discography volume 2 compiled by Michel Ruppli has the same listing but does not mention an alternate of 'O.G.D.'. Both Verve 8766 and 8767 are listed but no take number is allocated. There are no take numbers for any of the sides recorded at these sessions. Michael Fitzgerald
Minor correction - the Ruppli book puts the same take on both 8677 and 8766. If there are indeed two versions, this is certainly wrong. This stuff is a typo accident just looking for a place to happen. Mike
Jim R
Mike, September 23, 1966: as before Not quite... one trombonist was switched, and Ray Barretto was out. ===== 101195 'Round Midnight (Smith / Montgomery duet) ===== 101288 O.G.D. Verve V6-8766 101288 O.G.D. (alternate take) Verve V6-8677 The (Ruppli) Verve discography only lists one take, used on both 8766 and 8677. My old 1993 CD of FURTHER ADVENTURES only includes one take (6:06). Am I missing something?
Bill Fenohr
Just listened to the heads on both versions and they are two different takes. At first looking at the times i thought maybe the alternate was a editited version of the master since it is only 5:21, but no it is a different take. But there is no take number listed. Jim R the alternate is on the Adventures Of cd.
mikeweil
Well, I was too lazy to type out orchestra personnel details ... -_- There are indeed two different takes of O.G.D. - Bruyninckx copies that error from Ruppli. But I checked the issue numbers - my listing has them correct. The CD reissues confirm these.
mikeweil
101195 'Round Midnight (Smith / Montgomery duet) This is not a duet - it has the orchestra backing them as on the previous tracks!
Jim R
101195 'Round Midnight (Smith / Montgomery duet) This is not a duet - it has the orchestra backing them as on the previous tracks! I wasn't spinning the CD, just reading from Ruppli. Not the kind of error I expected to see in there... Bill, thanks. I never upgraded my "Further Adventures..." CD. mikeweil
I never upgraded my "Further Adventures..." CD. The "alternate" was included on the Verve Master Edition CD of "The Dynamic Duo" as they had overlooked it at the time of the "Further Adventures" reissue! mikeweil
Jim R the alternate is on the Adventures Of cd. This is wrong - see my initial listing, which is correct in that respect. CD titles correspond to the titles of the main LPs they reissued, each with one bonus track from a sampler.
Shrdlu
Verve is, at times, a rather frustrating label when it comes to discographical details. They were a little miserly when it came to personnel listings on their LP covers. And either they did not keep the full details in their files, or some of these files have been lost. Two examples. (1) Who is the drummer on Jobim's great album "The Composer of Desafinado Plays"? The best guess of a very knowledgeable friend of mine is Milton Banana, who was, as he put it, "a member of the Jobim entourage at the time". (2) Who plays on Gary McFarland's "Soft Samba Strings"? The piano, bass, guitar and percussion are all superb, but no information is given. I am guessing Ron on bass, and possibly Jobim himself on guitar - he was on two tracks on the earlier "Soft Samba" album; otherwise maybe Kenny Burrell. That is a short, but very good album. (It was made by various overdubs, and, sadly, the tape speeds were not quite right as the piano is a bit sharp. It really needed to be re-done, but I guess the budget did not allow for too many attempts.)
