sidewinder Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Recently listening to a German Liberty copy of Lee Morgan's 'Live At The Lighthouse' (which has the original US sleeve) I was impressed at the really excellent pressing quality. On the basis of this and several other German Liberty's in my collection (including a 'Natural Essence' and a 'Conquistador') I'd say that the German pressings definitely have the edge on the US counterparts of this particular vintage. Anyone else got any of these Teutonic beauties and care to comment? Quote
brownie Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I have several of these German BN vinyls and they are indeed excellent. Listened recently to my German BN vinyl of Ornette Coleman 'New York Is Now' and it was pure pleasure. I lost a German pressing of Cecil Taylor's 'Conquistador' and replaced it with a US vinyl pressing. That one did not sound as clear as the German one! Quote
sidewinder Posted November 18, 2004 Author Report Posted November 18, 2004 Glad to hear that it is not just me that is hearing this ! That Morgan 'Live at the Lighthouse' has tremendous presence and is in mint. 'Van Gelder' in the hot wax too. In fact it absolutely trounces the 3CD set in terms of sound quality. I think the LP has additional announcements by Lee too (although admittedly the extra material on the CD set is nice). Worth keeping a lookout for these ! Quote
wolff Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I do not have any, but if it sounds better than my original Lee Morgan's 'Live At The Lighthouse' they must be very nice, indeed. That it trounces the CD, is well..... Germany did and does press some mighty fine LP's. Quote
Leeway Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I often see French pressings Stateside, but rarely German ones. Where were they pressed and by which company and does the sleeve and label have any significant differences from the US version? Quote
brownie Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Don't know which company pressed the German BNs. These came with the original US BN covers. The French-pressed DMM BN LPs (with Made in France lookalike covers) should be ignored. Sound on those just does not compare with the original LPs. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 19, 2004 Author Report Posted November 19, 2004 (edited) These German Libertys should not be mentioned in the same breath as the Pathe Marconi DMMs . Visually they are hardly distinguishable from Blue/White US Liberty pressings but just have a bit of German text around the periphery of the label. The quality of the pressings far exceeds that of any US Liberty pressings of the 1967-early 70s vintage I have heard. Better quality control - comparable I guess to the early (pre-Liberty) NY USA vintage in the US. Edited November 19, 2004 by sidewinder Quote

Actually when I don't find original pressing of rock records, or they are too expensive, I go for german and dutch pressings, they are far better than french and italian pressing, sometimes are better than original!! And if you consider the quality of ECM pressing, one of the most silent and long lasting vinyl I tested in my life. Those germans!! Edited November 19, 2004 by porcy62 Quote
