I'm sorry, but getting aid (and lots of it) to these nations as quickly as possible is very much part of this story. Sometimes there isn't a line between life and politics...they are one in the same. I think we can all agree that $15 million from the worlds one and only super power is simply not enough. We need to lead in this world and these are the type of opportunities that Bush administration should jump on to show the world that we are a benevolent and caring nation. Hopefully Bush will realize this before it's too late (we have a very small window of time with which to work with to avoid a humanitarian crisis). In the mean time, there are private relief agencies that need our support. I encourage all to give generously to these agencies and do all they can within their means.

This "enough politics" thread is pretty sad.

7/4"This "enough politics" thread is pretty sad."

But not surprising--notice who the people are who want us to forget U.S. politics.

I see that that the Bush people have been shamed into adding another 20 million to the paltry amount they pledged, and we are finally sending ships and equipment. It is shameful that these people took so long to come up with what essentially amounts to a pittance when compared to the tax-payer money they squander feeding their self-interests.

Finally, a voice of reason linking the political to this tragedy. :tup

Fox is showing a count of 52,000, The Independent 55,000.  :(

I'm afraid those figures are way below reality. The BBC reported a much higher one this morning.

I know. The count keeps rising. :o

Sadly, I think when all is said and done we will be much closer to 100,000 dead. There are so many people unaccounted for, and it seems that the vast majority of them are dead if they haven't been found yet.

Johnny,

This has become primarily a "political" thread with a few "death toll rises" thrown in for good measure. I would agree there is a polital side of this but if you (not you necessarily, in general) only want to discuss the political side, you should go to the political forum and post.

Well, I guess I've been shown the light by Christiern and 7/4. Boy, do I feel like I've been put in MY place, I'm telling you.

My apologies to Johnny E, if he feels insulted that I would dare compliment him without the approval of the Organissimo Elite!

EDIT

No, I'm sorry; my sentiments for Johnny were from the heart.

My apologies to the Organissimo Elite for not going through them before offering my compliments to others on this Board.

BTW,

I've always been the voice of reason. But with the conservatives constantly slapping me unside the head with misinformation and straight out lies, it's hard to be taken seriously when fact is fiction and truth is a by-product of the maginalized.

Now my little organissimo droogies, itty off to the local GOP offices and tolchock their yarbles till you can viddy the strack in their bugatty glazzies, then bolnoy their gorlo's slowly as they shit their spoogy neezhnies.

Where are all the dead animals? Sri Lanka asks

29 Dec 2004 07:21:21 GMT

Source: Reuters

COLOMBO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan wildlife officials are stunned -- the worst tsunami in memory has killed around 22,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast, but they can't find any dead animals.

Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.

"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters on Wednesday.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening."

At least 40 tourists, including nine Japanese, were drowned.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, which sent waves up to 5-metres (15-feet) high crashing onto Sri Lanka's southern, eastern and northern seaboard, flooding whole towns and villages, destroying hotels and causing widespread destruction.

Tsunami Kills Few Animals in Sri Lanka

By GEMUNU AMARASINGHE, Associated Press Writer

YALA NATIONAL PARK, Sri Lanka - Wildlife officials in Sri Lanka expressed surprise Wednesday that they found no evidence of large-scale animal deaths from the tsunamis — indicating that animals may have sensed the wave coming and fled to higher ground.

An Associated Press photographer who flew over Sri Lanka's Yala National Park in an air force helicopter saw abundant wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, deer, and not a single animal corpse.

Floodwaters from Sunday's tsunami swept into the park, uprooting trees and toppling cars onto their roofs — one red car even ended up on top of a huge tree — but the animals apparently were not harmed and may have sought out high ground, said Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne, whose Jetwing Eco Holidays ran a hotel in the park.

"This is very interesting. I am finding bodies of humans, but I have yet to see a dead animal," said Wijeyeratne, whose hotel in the park was destroyed.

"Maybe what we think is true, that animals have a sixth sense," Wijeyeratne said.

Yala, Sri Lanka's largest wildlife reserve, is home to 200 Asian Elephants, crocodile, wild boar, water buffalo and gray langur monkeys. The park also has Asia's highest concentration of leopards. The Yala reserve covers 391 square miles, but only 56 square miles are open to tourists.

The human death toll in Sri Lanka surpassed 21,000. Forty foreigners were among 200 people in Yala who were killed.

We're just out of tune folks.
