kh1958 Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Unfortunately, I haven't seen him live in three or four years, but I sure wouldn't miss him if I had the chance. Quote
sheldonm Posted December 30, 2004 Author Report Posted December 30, 2004 Fathead is one of those guys that seems to play better with age; never a dissapointment! I'll be there on Sunday with Sal! If anyone else can make it, drop me a pm! Mark Quote

ejp626 Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Sadly, I am writing a couple of academic papers this weekend and can't get away. I'll keep my eyes open though. I did see that Tatsu Aoki has got something at Hothouse to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and it appears to be free! Did either of you make it to see Vandermark and Spaceways at the Empty Bottle yesterday? Quote

I'm sure Fathead can lend a hand also! Didn't see any of the other shows you mentioned; wish I had! Mark Quote
sal Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Did either of you make it to see Vandermark and Spaceways at the Empty Bottle yesterday? Been stuck at work late all week, and really wanted to catch that show, but couldn't do it. Quote
ejp626 Posted December 30, 2004 Report Posted December 30, 2004 Well, the Aoki hasn't happened yet, so there's time. Wednesday, February 9 - Hothouse Tatsu Aoki's Miyumi Project Celebrates Chinese New Year 8:30pm Free, (21 & Over) I didn't make Spaceways either, but I read that one of the members (Drake ?) moved back to Chicago and they will probably be performing more regularly, so I will definitely keep my eyes open. Still don't think I can make Fathead, but we'll see... Quote
sheldonm Posted January 3, 2005 Author Report Posted January 3, 2005 Here's a couple quick photos from tonights Fathead Newman show in Chicago. Great show and packed house. I spoke to Newman for 20 minutes before the show and a few minutes afterwards. I asked him about the Ray Charles dvd in Brazil and specifically about Tina Brooks and he said he loved playing with Tina and always felt Tina was underrated; was a joy to play with. I asked him how long Tina played with Ray and he said about 2 years. I also gave Fathead a matted print that I made of him last year and he gave me a signed copy of his new CD that will be out in the near future. It's a tribute to Ray Charles (see below). I listened to it on my drive home; nice stuff! Quote
sheldonm Posted January 3, 2005 Author Report Posted January 3, 2005 ...and another. I'll post some good ones in a few days. Got to get some sleep! Mark Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 Other than "opening" for Fathead a few years back (what a blast that was), the only other time I've had the pleasure of seeing him live was on a joint appearance with Mose Alison. Now, I like Mose allright, but Fathead sounded SO good that night and much to my dismay, he kept taking these really short solos, in order to let Mose sing and do his thing. After about the 6th song of this, when Fathead ended his solo after only a chorus yet again, I yelled out, "Don't stop!!!" He just smiled. I got to talk to him backstage. A genuinely nice person. sheldonm Posted January 3, 2005 Author Report Posted January 3, 2005 Same thing in this case, Jim; Fathead played with Henry Johnson's Organ Express (with Chris Foreman on B-3). While this band is very good, they played 4-5 tunes before Fathead joined in. Newman did sound great though; played alto, tenor and flute during his 45 minutes of playing! Quote

I'm really looking forward to the Fathead tribute to Ray CD-I've saved one of my Border's gift cards specifically for that one, which is out on January 11, I believe. If anyone should do a tribute to Ray, its Fathead. B-) Quote
