ghost of miles Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 I'm putting together an anthology of jazz from Indiana for the Indiana Historical Society and want to include something from the very first Supersax album, PLAYS BIRD (1972). The group was led by Indiana native Med Flory, and this particular album also includes Conte Candoli, who was from Indiana as well. Does anybody have a copy of the OOP cd from which they could send me a burn? (I tried ordering the import version from Mr. Tanno, but he can't get it either.) Right now I'm simply putting together a demo CD-R for the IHS. Quote
Bluerein Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 Don't they always play Bird???? I've got the MPS Chasin' the Bird but I'm not sure that's the one you're looking for. Quote
White Lightning Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 I have a Capitol CD: Supersax plays Bird. Is that what's you're after, GoM? Quote
Brad Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 Chasin' the Bird is on Ebay right now. Looks tasty so I've bid on it. If you want a cdr of that one, let me know. Quote
JSngry Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 (edited) I have a Capitol CD: Supersax plays Bird. Is that what's you're after, GoM? Most likely is. That was their first album. Bought the LP when it first came out. I was in high school, and thought it was cool shit, which in many ways, it was. Sold it a while back, though. Edited January 9, 2005 by JSngry Quote
Free For All Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 The Supersax album Salt Peanuts was my first introduction to Carl Fontana. I wish that one would come out on CD. I've also wished some of the saxes would solo- I'm assuming they did when the group performed live. Other than the great guests like Fontana, Rosolino and Candoli the concept/sound wears thin after a while, IMHO. An interesting idea, to be sure- the concept of the 4 part voicing w/the bottom voice doubling the lead voice at the octave is an important fundamental technique for big band arranging. There is however a lot more to explore with opening up that voicing- it does get a little bland when used exclusively. You can sure crank out the product that way, though (because of the formulaic method). Still grateful to them for turning me on to Carl, however. Quote
JSngry Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 There's a live thing on Hindsight that I bought last a few years ago where there's lots of solos. But only one by Warne Marsh. Bummer, I bought it specifically to hear him. But I guess the Supersax guys (the other saxists, anyway) all thought he was wierd or something, which tells you a lot about where that group's head was at. Quote
Ed S Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 I've got a copy as well and can probably get a burn to you faster than Barak, though you never know...... Let me know Quote
