Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 (edited) Anyone know anything about this disc? I found this listing on line but even that doesn't say who plays on it other than Webster. AMG lists this title on the Jazz Hour label, which I always thought was a bootleg company over in Italy. This disc is supposedly being manufactured by Sony. Later, Kevin Edited January 12, 2005 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
JSngry Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Looks like Black Lion stuff to me. Which is GOOD. Quote
JSngry Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 To be more specific a complilation of various Black Lion (aka 1201) dates. All of which are exquisite. Selections from these seem to form the bulk of the compilation. Like I said, exquisite. Quote

Dan Gould Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Plus Kenny Drew, NHOP, & Alex Riel, 1-30-65. Some of my most favoritest Ben is the Black Lion stuff. About 15 years ago, the Black Lion stuff - both Ben and Dex - really made me stand up and take notice of Kenny Drew, so it was great all around! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 12, 2005 Author Report Posted January 12, 2005 I agree that the Black Lion stuff is great. I have all of it on CD. I wonder if this SACD could improve the sound? Well, I think I'm going to pass. The disc goes for almost $40 on ebay. I can buy a lot of other discs with that $40. Thanks everyone. Later, Kevin Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 (edited) So, I had managed to "pass" on this title for that last 6 months or so... then Acoustic Sounds got it in for $30 (more than I like to pay) and I figured, there aren't any other Ben Webster SACDs, and there probably won't be any more so screw it! I am soooo glad I got this. I love Ben's breathy tone and it's audible in all its glory on this SACD. They only dropped one tune from the large band session, "The Jeep Is Jumpin'". Funny thing is, I thought the Black Lion stuff was the live material I have on two German CDs. It turns out that I didn't even own this material! What a nice bonus. Well worth it for me.
