Noj Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 3- a very well-known Herbie Hancock composition. Can't say I care for this easy-listening version... Wow, I'd never thought of the JB's as easy-listening, but I guess they ARE. This is actually a revelation for me. Brownie: "11- A journalist friend played me that 'song' a few years ago. I found it a bit grandiloquent. He liked it, I didn't. The music gets better when the preaching stops!" I felt exactly the opposite about this track. Isn't that weird? Jim R: "1. This has that familiar mid to late 60’s sound to it... could be a BN... is it Billy Higgins on drums? I gotta be honest, though- I don’t like this stuff very much. The music is groovy in a way, and I know a lot of folks dig this sound, but for me it just conjures up images of girls with WAY too much eye make-up, guys in tight pants exposing the ankles, people doing ridiculously stupid dances, and even bad movies (does anybody remember the theme to “The Ambushers” starring Dean Martin?). Having lived through that era (okay, even though I was only 10 in 1966), and having seen and heard a lot of these things, maybe I have more trouble with it than somebody who wasn’t born yet. Anyway, the beat is one thing, but when you add a melody with that type of rhythm to it, well, I just can’t take it." Fascinating how historical perspective plays a role in how we hear things. For myself, this was just a good groovin' tune with no corny associations. For Jim, the song associates to other things he finds distasteful. Quote
